I thought Ash was based off the Yellow Version guy, and Gary off of BLUE, because at one point in Season 1, Prof. Oak refers to two other trainers from Pallet Town (the ones who took CHARMANDER and BULBASAUR) and said they weren't good enough to get to the Pokemon League, so they must have been RED and GREEN. Which I frankly don't get, considering RED was the boss before Ash was even born.

@MultiYounglink They are pretty much the same, but some pokemon can only be caught in one version. For example, spinarak can only be caught in gold, while ledyba can only be caught in silver.

FireRed, LeafGreen: Not much difference, probably like 5 Pokemon are in one but not in the other.

Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald: the legendary Pokemon (Ruby Groudon, Sapphire Kyogre, Emerald Rayquaza)

Gold, Silver: in Gold you catch Ho-oh early in game at level 45 and later Lugia at level 70. other way around with Silver.

Diamond, pearl: The Legendary pokemon (Dia: Dialga, Pea: Palkia, and the wild pokemon you can find)

Black, White: Pokemon that you can find, and legendary.

In essence you need both to beat the game to catch the other ones the game doesn;t have.

Red was made BEFORE Ash. Red is the main character in the manga "Pokemon Adventures". This manga later became an ANIME. The main character of the anime is ASH. BUT Ash is BASED off RED and is not EXACTLY Red. Red started off with a BULBASAUR not a PIKACHU.

This goes the same for BLUE as he started with a CHARMANDER not a SQUIRTLE.

Besides that. the games Red and Green (In Japan) came out one year BEFORE the anime was even aired. So back then, he is RED and not ASH.

Well, officially Ash isn't in this game either. Ash is based on Red, the character you play in Red/Blue/Green/Yellow and fight in Gold/Silver/Crystal. Because Ash is based on Red and not the other way around, Ash really isn't in any pkmn-game.
