i once pulled this off in a chopper too. yup, free fall, max altitude managed to get in about halfway towards the ground, epic succes of a random landing on the middle of the road going through the civilian village straight east of the starting point in the game. got so afraid it would blow up i exited immediately. when i tried to get back in and go up again, i found out i broke it, it wouldn't go straight up, just spinned uncontrolably. so i blew it up.

No, It's for real. I tried thing and it automatically spins after you get in again. The only way t slow down the spinning is by holding LT. Once you're about to touch the ground, the helicopter spins out of control, you cant stop it. It usually survives the hard landing though. And it's impossible to take off again, the helicopter will just spin a bit on the ground and remain in place.
