Come on people, I'm french and I've been to Montmartre several times, if those "black people" come to you just say a firm "NO" and they'll leave you alone. And no, it's not a shame this kind of thing is permitted in Paris, they're just trying to make a living, while you were lucky and rich enough to travel to Paris. Not everybody has luck in life.

yes, definately aviod the lower steps of the Sacre Coeur like the plague ! Those guys will rip rip you off left right & centre if you let them. Take the side steps where the tram used to take people up to the top( left hand side looking up to top ).

It's a shame this kind thing is permited in Paris. Yes, avoid eye contact, say nothing and keep walking if you really want to take the scenic walk up to the top.

We all had the bracelets forced on us.."hakuna matata, I am only an artist" they've asked me for 5 euros, then for 2 e..but I did not wanted or needed any bracelet forced on my wrist. You will find the same bracelets tactis near the Effel tower:)) and they also sell beer on the steps of Sacre Coeur. And if you want to buy the keychain with the Effel tower, the prices go lower and lower the closer you get to the Effel tower.

@vivizapa the way to avoid them is not making any eye contact with them and keep walking, it's better than insisting that you don't want the bracelet and you'll be giving a clear message to them. if you make eye contact and reply to them they won't leave you alone they'll follow you until you give in.

plus, it's useless to pretend you don't speak their language, we tried that but the guy who approached us could speak spanish, italian, english and of course, french

If you like Montmartre... Iam a parisian cityscape artist , check out what I do on google under Liam Porisse, then into galeries . I used to paint on the Place du Tertre artists square from 82-86 made good money , but I got off as it fucks your legs up being standing up all day 10hours a day 6 days a week. On the slope in front of Sacre Coeur, avoid all the African guys trying to make bracelets on your wrist. If you give in, tell them they get no more than half a Euro.
