Some people like the sound of a pick over fingers. When I'm playing metal with my band, I use a pick because it sounds better for what I'm playing.

Even so, if you listen to the song, some of the palm muting parts are fairly fast.

Who gives a fuck about the band's religion? Its a great song and I like almost all their stuff. What difference should their religion make? You shouldn't stop listening to anyone just because you find out something like that, say you find you like a band on the radio and then see them and they just look stupid or not as expected, so you close your eyes and head bang on.
