  • One of the best pieces of music entire Europe can offer! Must admire these islanders for this track

  • Great band

  • brilliant keyboard solo (shame the very end of the track has been snipped off).

  • I just get lost in it for ages.....completely enveloped by it

  • Not only my favourite cover, my favourite punk or my favourite Stranglers track, this is one of my favourite tracks of all time. Can't explain but it gets me deep inside and feaks me out every time I hear it!

  • Burt Bacharach plus The Stranglers...LETS GO FOR A STROLL IN THE TREES!! Seriously though Bass, keyboards...Did Dave Greenfield ever get the acclaim he deserved?

Now middle aged but still listening and remembering Newcastle Mayfair in 1979 I was 15. My first concert. Walk on By!

  • YEEEAH, MUTHERFUCKERZ!

  • seem to remember this was a free single (on white vinyl no less!) with Black and White. Gr8 freebie and coloured vinyl ah those were the days.

  • alexa chung, please stop bringing annoying children here.

  • great cover by a great band, seen them live around 5 times now since the late 70,s....

  • Holy shit theyre playing an hour away from me in March... I MUST GO!

  • alexa chung bought me here ;)

  • I WILL SAY IT AGAIN--THE GREATEST COVER SONG EVER--PERIOD--NO QUESTIONS ASK--THE BASS LINE RIPS AT IT'S BEST--JJ IS GOD--

  • WOT NO PURPLE HELMETS THEN

  • One of the best cover songs ever!!!!

  • 22 people need to be Strangled!

  • GREAT BAND!!!!!!

  • Wow - just discovering The Stranglers (thanks to hearing "Peaches" in the movie "Sexy Beast"). Always thought Isaac Hayes' slow, dark cover of Walk On By was the best one out there - until I heard this version. PHENOMENAL!! These cats are no joke!!

  • agree dizzy :(

  • Hey : don`t be rude to mrs warwick. the song was beautiful when she sung it. But it became a weapon of mass destruction when the stranglers covered it. Brilliant.

  • i can't walk on by because i love you xxx

  • Fuck off Dionne Warwick :P

  • @d00000000000000000d Whooa, reign it in there hard kid! It's just a great song and DW is one of the great singers like Aretha and Amy! When u mature a bit u'll get it. Guaranteed!

  • @joetotale1 Yes Joe I already know that, thanks. I was just being silly... typical internet talk, ya know? lol

  • @joetotale1 Hey Dooooooooooood, sorry, I didn't mean to sound condescending there, I was a bit pissed! I just happen to be a thrash metal punk (old!) who loves a few classic singers! Peace

  • @joetotale1 Papa... Make sure to send it to him. I do that all of the time.

    -Positive Vibes.

  • dfgs

  • free with the black & WHITE album best cover of Walk on By!!

  • I bought the album with the original 'white' single back in '78 and at that time this was really quite shocking (as well as exciting!). Since then it has become the 'standard' version of this song and knocks Dionne whoeveritwas into the shade:-) One of the best covers of all time as well; the song has been completely taken to pieces and reassembled.

  • Outrageously great......long live the synthesizer!!!!

  • if i rember rightly this was a freebee single about a hundred years ago

  • A seriouly excellent cover . . . Dion Warwick loves it apparently . . .

  • @nickstonecarver1 That's really good to know. She obviously has taste.

  • These guys were/are a hoot.

    Not enough bands like this.

  • and still the reigning champion. Superb - no other word for it.

  • A Porky Prime Cut !!!!

  • Great cover, the audio positively sucks though.

  • @AAAbstractJack get a good stereo lol

  • Comment removed

  • @gilky1a I guess my stereo sounds too good LOFL!

  • Still the best cover of a classic song by an equally classic band! The instrumental section is amazing and JJ was goegeous, and I'm a bloke!

  • Still the best cover of a classic song by an equally classic band!

  • This is what a cover version should be like. Something different not a carbon copy!

  • Death to rap-crap! That jungle shit will never kill this music.

  • There is always comparison made with the Doors when this is played; this song pisses all over 'light my fire' (which I love) and with the added bonus of the 'tear yer face off bass'.... Dave and JJ's reworking of the dualing banjos...not sure who wins???

  • the only punk band that turn hippys on from old hippy smoke that joint.

  • @cutforth1 they wernt known as punk to start off with ..i know i was there in 77..cheers

  • @59jimmyb I guess Stranglers was set on the New Wawe category i.e punk bands who had learned to play or musicians who wanted to do energetic music and could play their instruments LOL ;) Punk very much stagnated to spiky hair rivet uniforms.

  • i bloody love this record! ... my favourite stranglers track, perfect rock record in every respect and a lesson in how to do a cover version and make it your own

  • @meanytunes you are so right..i loved it then and still do..fucking brilliant..cheers

  • @meanytunes you are so right..i loved it then and still do..fucking brilliant..cheers

  • so hard and so sweet... best cover

  • I had the white 45 single of this, but it went to the plastic heaven in a bush fire in Canberra 10 years ago, along with all my other records and a Linn deck. Great to be re-discovering it through this. EVERYBODY should know this.

  • Just brilliant.

  • my first concert was at Newcastle mayfair in 1979 and was the stranglers. Dave Greenfield was amazing, never seemed to get credit for what was the most amazing keyboards and this is probably the best example. Maybe a bit derivative of the doors but definitely the thinking mans punk band.

  • May I recommend the bok 'An Essential Guide To Music In The 1970s' by Johnny Zero. The author is a big fan of this track.

  • Epic!!! No one will come close to this again...it's a masterpiece...like the Mona Lisa, it was produced in it's time. Sadly...those days are gone.....shit....

  • @dizzycorner plenty of music these days are similar, but pretentious.

  • this will never cease to amaze and please me

  • STRANGLERS ..BEST EVER IN UK. BEAT SHIT OUT OF ANYTHING SINCE AND THAT INCLUDES CHERYL EFFIN COLE!!

  • masterpiece. Absolutely

  • There's so much original music in this cover! Magnificent track.

  • I'm sure this song had a much longer solo section, there's a bad audio edit at 1.30....this may be where the rest of the solo went...??

  • If you see me walking down the street

  • Loved it back in the day, but it showed their affection for the Doors. Listen to Light my fire if you feel like disagreeing...

  • The Stranglers.

    'nuff said.

My favorite of all time. And I'm old.

  • Love this song. Does anyone else think that they sound like they are trying to imitate The Doors with that long instrumental break?

  • @wayneiac1 Had the exact same thought whilst listening to this at full blast on my ipod shuffle whilst lyin in the bath!,.,...very Ray Manzarek-esque!,..

  • Thanks for uploading this one. Brilliant.

The Stranglers were truly talented. Best of the "new wave" in so many ways.

  • love the bass

reminds me of Annie Holland from the now no longer Elastica

  • I think out of every development in music history there are good things and bad things. I think if we put everything into a category then we are being close-minded. There is good rap (mostly old school) and there is bad rap. It goes the same for rock n roll.

  • Actually, this is a fabulous version of the song!!!! Love it!!!

  • @thiccaboss filthy wanker

  • i am a man in black.

  • Capolavoro di tecnica strumentale!!!!

  • When music was music and songs had to be written

  • Dionne Warwick did it better...

  • @dxmkrew Dionne Warwick did it different. They were both excellent versions of the song and demonstrate that it is possible to produce a re-arrangement without either sounding like a tribute band or ruining the song

  • She did it different, not better (FOOL)

  • My dad bought me 'Rattus ...' and I was hooked .. never saw a better live band but then this was the era of electric live performances. Saw them at Bath Pavillion (passed out at the gig, running battle outside), Gaumont Southampton also a favourite. 'Waltz in Black' as their intro was always mega ..

  • @MrCheeseboy55

Best Britsh band ever, period !!!!!!!!!!

  • Saw them 20 odd times in the 70s - brilliant live band, seen many since but no-one comes close ..

  • best version ever.

  • This is brilliant, done credit to the original. If, and it ain't very often I'm feeling a bit morose, then this song just reflects my mood perfectly and then cheers me up at the same time. The instruments are played superbly and the vocals snarl and pick me up perfectly also.

  • The bass in this song rocks....you could turn this in to a thnder metal song just loose the b-3 and the singer.....add some detuned guitar and you got it......Gino

  • I have totally crap speakers on my PC, but Hugh' s voice on this particular track on my sound system is just so rich and deep. A fantastic artist, with a brilliant buch of musicians.

  • I have totally crap speakers on my PC, but Hugh' s voice on this particulartrack on my sound system is just so rich and deep. A fantastic artist, with a brilliant buch of musicians.

  • this is the best cover I have ever heard xxx

  • @rehatdtilldead689908 does that mean u like it?

  • @robonaught best cover ever.......... rage against the machine,,,,,aint gonna work om maggies farm any more..... dylans classic . . . . . but this is a storming second :-|)

  • saw stranglers live in a pub after a football game - they are real music legands

  • Comment removed

  • Saw this live last summer, absolutely fantastic! Couldn't stop howling in ecstasy.

Even with the second singer, they're very VERY good :)

    fucking legends!

  • tht BASSssssssssss

    tht BASSssssssssss

    .

    _

    .O.

  • This is when MUSICIANS took a song , re-arranged it to sound better not like those filthy DJs who nick a record and Yap(rap) over the top of it. I cant wait til RAP dies out and people start playing music with intruments again , rant over.

  • @baceace you said it ,i love this version, allways did.

  • @baceace many rap songs or studio played instrumental songs and even in that genre is a lot to be found... check out the guys and girls signed up at chess records (same as in the movie cadillac records)

  • @baceace raps already died out. you just dont get sampling. and this cover sucks ballls.

  • @baceace Totally agree RAP Ranting Atrocious Pewk

  • @baceace Amen. I just hope that the rap crap does fade away soon, I've been waiting also.

  • @baceace

I think it is ignorant to compare rap, a type of vocals, with music.

Hip hop is the type of music, and it can be made with instruments and computers. Rap are the vocals, opposed to singing.

Just listen to Skytturnar - Örkin hans Nóa

    on youtube

  • @Vitringur

Rap - a form of popular music developed especially in African-American urban communities

    see thefreedictionary

Can we all agree to use popular definitions rather than those Vitringur would like to be true

    Can we agree to

  • @baceace Go FUCK YOURSELF!!!!!! YALL TOOK OUR MUSIC OF ROCK AND ROLL AND MADE IT YOURS>>SO WHAT OTHER ALTERNATIVE DO WE HAVE AS FAR AS EXPRESSION TO KEEP FROM KILLING YALL...UHHHH MUSIC....I MEAN WHAT THE FUCK AND WHILE YOU'RE RANTING....UHHH THIS SONG HAS BEEN REMADE IT'S NO DIFFERENT THAN WHT WE'RE DOIN IN RAP...I'LL TAKE THIS TRACK AND REMIX THE SHIT AND RAP OVER IT AND I BET YOUR CHILDREN WILL LOVE THAT SHIT...WE DON'T DIE...WE MULTIPLY...AND BEFORE RAP DIES ...THE WORLD WILL...REALISM OVER

  • @bjb32278 rap=crap!

  • Comment removed

  • @machinegundrum AHHH DEAL WITH IT....GET OVER YOUR FUCKING SELF...THE ONLY WAY YOU'LL GET RID OF RAP MUSIC IS BY GETTING RID OF US...AND HOW THE FUCK YOU'RE GONNA GET RID OF OVER 11 MILLION PEOPLE?...BESIDES.RAP IS SIMPLY POETRY TO A RHYTHEM...BUT YOU'RE NOT OPENMINDED ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND THAT...RAP( THESE DAYS) DOESN'T MAKE ANY SINCE...BUT DO YOUR FUCKIN RESEARCH BETWEEN THE YEARS OF 1978-1988..AND IF YOU HAVIN'T RESEARCHED...YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO JUDGE IT...PEOPLE FEAR WHAT THEY DON'T KNOW

  • @bjb32278 me bitches blah blah blah,me bling blah blah blah, cap yo ass blah blah blah, dis me blah blah blah, player, blah blah blah! whats poetic about that?just another gobby little talentless shite with nothing original to say

  • @machinegundrum yehhhhhhhhh good on ya RAP IS CRAP Full stop

  • @bjb32278 Well , throwing you RAP lot in a fully functional gas chamber would do the trick . Fear of RAP ? please don't fool yourself .

  • @nasc2 well you're fooling yourself buddy...you do fear....if you don't then why make such a comment when you have'nt did any history or reasearch on it?...BECUASE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND IT!!!!!...DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!....HERE I'LL GIVE YOU A HEAD START GO TO YOUTUBE MOVIES AND GO TO THE DOCUMENTARY SECTION LOOK THOUGH IT TIL YOU FIND THE MOVIE CALLED SCRATCH..WATCH, LEARN , UNDERSTAND...better yet...TYPE IN THE SEARCH BOX....NIKE VIDEO: CLASSIC BY NAS,AND KRS-ONE, ...WATCH, LEARN ,UNDERSTAND

  • @baceace your right my friend

  • @baceace Good luck, rap has been around 40 years.

And when haven't musicians been playing music with instruments?

Are you just complaining for the sake of it or do you not know ANY modern bands? also please stop being an elitist.

  • @lolatmyaccounts I'm complaining coz I dont like it. I dont mind if its jus to fill a song out like chilli peppers do otherwise its just wanabe singers who cant sing wanting lime light like the berks on Xfactor

  • @baceace gotta respect Eminem for his lyrics

  • @sheikyerbouti1983 If you are going to put lyrics to somthing at least come up with a tune instead of a monotone mumble like you did on all of your last records. Eminem has got nothing on Vanilla Ice

  • @baceace never happen

  • @baceace Sorry but you don't know what you are talking about. Commercial rap is bullshit agreed, but proper sampling is an artform and incredibly difficult and so is good rapping (look up Sage Francis, Adeem, Grieves, Sadistik, Eyedea) There rhyme schemes are incredibly complex and contain some of the best lyrics I have ever heard in my life out of any genre of music. These dudes are rhyming like 6 words with 6words in a bar and still saying incredible and profound things and keeping up a rhythm

  • @SomaLFM Sampling is for lazy sods who cant put the time and effort in to learn and play a musical instrument - they are just theives. And just coz somthing is complex doesn't make it sound good.

  • @baceace well what if the lazy sods...live in an enviroment where not much oppurtunities will arise to aid the teachings on how to play an instrument?...or may not have the funds to afford the instrument to play...or find someone willing to teach due to social difficulties or differences...or plain fear of one another or rejection?...those are the primary reasons that hip hop was born and out of hip hop culture rap music emerged along wih those digital instruments...

  • @baceace and also let me ask how openminded are you?...are you openminded to learning?...if you are..well here's a history lesson...so you can understand...ihp hop and rap is totally different from each other and this explains why....check it out...copy and paste this in the search box ( History of the birth Hip Hop Culture until 1991 prt1 )

  • @baceace rap IS a;ready dead, dont you see that little lesbian justin beober taking over the rap industry. haha americas tatse in music is like a bloody tampon that just came out a fat smelly cunt

  • @oblongfan1 nice display of misogyny there.

  • @oblongfan1 wow whatta incredibly ignorant generalization u have there. but i do believe the essence of rap has long been lost as its become more and more commercialized.

  • @baceace love this track

  • @baceace People still play live instruments but nobody cares about them.

  • Yes, and young musicians should discover the musical tradition that began before pop music. Bands like The Stranglers probably grew up singing Church of England hymns. The only musical reference today's young pop stars have is the pop music they've known since birth. That is why contemporary pop is so derivative.

  • @baceace I don't think rap is dying out anytime soon. Besides, music is purely factional at this point. The groups of people who like rap are never going to like late 70s punk/new wave bands like The Stranglers. There's no reason why you can't tune out the music you don't like and focus on the music you do. That's why the internet is so great!

  • @harrissasha only a fool listenes to one form of music if you like rap ya can still love this i was a punk back in the days and still love it and all types of music and i love folk music i use to get my punk records conferscated when i was in a kids home always a rebel lol how times change and how ppl change

  • @paul196824

yeah, me too. i like any talent and creativity in any kind of music. New, old, before i was born. take the mainstream drivel and BURN it. Find your own way. Amazing music from now back through the centuries,, I even LOVE LVB (more of a genius than any living scientist !!) symphonies and anything amazing !!!! Music is LIFE.

  • @baceace ....good rant

  • @baceace well said and so true...

  • @baceace unfortunately i don't think it ever will. if it was going to it would've died a few years after its inception, like disco. just gotta stick to your guns through these rough times

  • @newfuckingwave Everything is possible, evolve..

  • @baceace well hiphop is my favourite genre and still i enjoy other genres , so when you don't understand rap , don't bash it , and don't think what you see on tv (lil wayne , drake) is the real hiphop

  • THIS ROCKS!!!!!

  • @johnlennon1970 Ah, a fellow musician I see!! Just looked at your page. Good stuff.

  • walk on by...baby

  • This is a classic remake. A fantastic musical rendition. Close your eyes and just take it all in

  • it may be a cover but what an upgrade! id like to point out the best part of the song is the part they wrote themselves. what a middle section. this song is ferocious.

  • I compare this solo here to Manzarek's in light my fire.

    Both are masterpiecies

  • Bliss!

  • FOOOKIN TUUUNNE!!

  • Hawhaww!! fuckin sooperb, a feel like pagerin mods now.

  • Brilliant, one of the greatest Stranglers songs............

  • As covers go! This is a classic by The Stranglers...

An amazing band, I still play their music today...Timeless.

  • When wanting to listen to these boys and having bought most of their stuff, I come back to this one more than any other. I know it's a cover but it's such a brilliant one.

  • the guy crouching in the picture is my base heroe

  • I saw them then!

  • Best base line JJ was the best

  • @MrGoonerforlife is the best!...;)

  • @modsheff1 thank you my friend. I was a DJ in the 70's and 80's and the stranglers where my favorite

  • @MrGoonerforlife JJ was the best,?,, The Stranglers are still alive and kicking, sounding better than ever. I saw them last winter on tour in Thessaloniki and it was a great gig, JJ still punches out a tune on that bass...Check them out if you get the chance.

  • Such...a long....keyboard solo.... :D

  • Found that ...

  • Best version of this music.

  • Come on baby light my fire!...

  • @lexomillia I'll getchu hot baby if you want me too. ;)

  • @Pillage4Pleasure ah! ah! touched! yes. i put a joke. simply a joke. but your answer really amused me.

  • @lexomillia your welcome. ;)

  • i love this version! I was raised on it, actually. the bass guitar here is awesome !

  • @shaya1301 Killer tone !

  • Everybody copies everything, but they just do it better....

  • Awesome cover of the song. I still prefer the Isaac Hayes version though.

  • Hi Rich

I think this is one of the most underated covers I can think of.

Sorry I cant get to Turkey- would love to!! No dosh.

I'm gonna send you another track.

    Bruce.

  • i crave good music

  • @jrjupton followed the stranglers for 20 odd years met them drank cans of fosters with them b4 they went on stage brilliant

  • not read the other comments, this is so doorish and jjb's base is great always was my fave cover of all time

  • @rog000

Agreed the Stranglers always had a Doorish feel for me not distracting from the fact that they were a great band though

  • The album cover above (Black & White), although slightly altered to show Dionne Warwick's head on Hugh Cornwall's body, is in my fave ever list, wish i'd have seen their promo tour for that album, but i saw em in 1979 on The Raven tour, which was a little dissapointing, but hey, i saw The Stranglers, so i'm still made up bout that to this day!

  • @dbrow220

LOL that isnt Dionne Warwick's head!! It belongs to Marsupial Kentish the Australian ladies rugby league skipper in the seventies who was dating Hugh at the time. Common mistake though so dont feel bad

  • Very much on the same theme as the greatest song ever (in my humble opinion) 'Light My Fire', I can't pay it a higher compliment than that.

  • withought any doubt..Best cover version..

  • @redwhitch17 absolute classic thanks Jeh ;-)
