Actually, Spotted Owls do not prefer to enter large areas open to the sky. This is why habitat fragmentation (small chunks of old growth separated by large areas of clearcut) is a seriously bad approach to land management.
The owls are fed for research purposes. They are captured and banded at birth and feeding the owls allows researchers to get close enough to examine the bands and identify bird migrations/movements/nesting patterns.

These owls used to feed in burns and clear-cuts, and now are finding food scarce.
