Beyond being the original, this is a far wittier and more romantic version of the musical.  In large measure this is due to Hammerstein's superior script. It's great to see it in circulation.

They aired this again on TV a few years ago for its anniversary or something and i remember i really wanted to see it since I was/am a huge Julie Andrews fan and knew it was one of her first filmed appearances. I missed it but my parents ended up surprising me with the DVD for my birthday. One of the best and sweetest presents ever. :)

Very wierd...that kid CAN'T be Mark Lester! He was born in 1958! I can't remember if this was broadcast in '57 or '58 but Lester would have been a baby or not born at all! But that kid is a dead ringer!

It is a shame CBS did not have a way to preserve this color broadcast in color. Some still photos exist, but thank heavens they had the presence of mind to at least preserve a Black and White kinescope.
