I recall her saying in an interview that she listened through a lot of recordings while maiking a compilation cd and that she sometimes thought: "well THIS I did quite beautiful!" And then a big smile followed :)
Very very beautifully sung and such an honest and intense interpretation.
How is it possible that some people try to compare two great artists who put all their artistry, yes their soul in a performance. Are two artists the same? Are their souls comparable?
Tebza84, the Callas Casta diva was/is, to me. the most emotional & memorable I have ever heard & her voice on a recording can bring tears to my eyes, still. But this is Leontyne, also one of the most remarkable voices of the 20th century. I marvel at the sound that comes out of her mouth. I do not compare the two. I merely listen and marvel, and thank God that I have had the opportunity to hear them both.
Leontyne sang this great aria in recitals, but never recorded the opera nor performed the role onstage so far as I'm aware. To me, this performance is so nuanced, expressive,
and daring:the balefulness, despair, urgency, and thrust. Here she opts for the low note at the end, which is just as dramatic, perhaps even moreso, as the alternative higher one. Every sound of Heaven and Earth was present in Leontyne's voice. This is singing of the highest order.
I certainly learned the power of low notes in 1985 when I got to hear Marilyn Horne in recital in Little Rock. She ended the song "Shall We Gather At The River" with a rich low note that thrilled me as much as any high note I've ever heard.
She was the best! Never heard her sing a bad note. One of the biggest thrills of my life was seeing her in Cleveland Met on tour opening night in Aida!!!
what a shallow remark. Maddalena is in sorrow and then extacy, why should she then be sung wit a etheral and beautiful voice? There is now interpretation in Price's vocabulary. She sings powerfully all the time, that's it. Did you hear Callas in this piece?
This is another magnificent morta version. And new photographs of Ms Price-an exceptionally beautiful and divine opera singer. Thank you for your excellent vidoes.

Penetrante. Assieme a Callas e Cerquetti una delle voci che - qui lo ammetto - mi riducono alle lacrime.

Aprille wished she could hold a candle to Miss Price.
With that said, Millo is a formidable Artist.

What an amazing performance. I think she comes as close to perfection in this aria as anyone...with the exception of La Divina Callas, of course!
