OMG guys. It's so obvious what it is. I can't believe that nobody else can see what I see. It's there intentionally. The triangle is merely the culmination of the angles and faces of the metal plates that make up the massive beam that you guys were on. It's just simple coincidence that it looks like a triangle. I bet if you looked at the same place on every one of the beams like that one, you'd find the same thing. The symbol inside a bit different. It's the icon symbol for a grunt head.

Not to burst anyone's ill-informed bubble, but what you see is nothing more than some mirroring. Bungie created a simple section of the wall, mapped it, then cloned it and attached the pieces to create a larger wall. Because they elected to not optimize the model by welding some extraneous vertices, the mapping coordinates were preserved, and at that particular area, they happened to be mirror images. If this is what defines a trigate, then you can find loads of them all over the series.

The trigates in halo were supposed 2 be gates 2 lead you 2 secret places thats all they were and the only reason why they weren't finished was because bungie had run out of space so when you press a switch or something the gates won't open now. and it lags because you're out of the skybox and it has to render all the parts not for you .. the vis-areas are all available out of the skyroom.. also if you get too much out you might fall down to infinite unless they haven't done an fall-clip around the textured walls.

as for the texture which looks like an "image" that's just a coincidence .. what happen there is both sides were copied from left to right because "time is money " you don't actualy think that the whole map was made by hand every part of it.. no? you can see on the top when you climb that the both textures the left and the mirror of it (right) continues..

its because you reach out of the sky .. the skybox is a special box which follows you as long as you are in the bsp skyroom if you somehow (using a bug or an opend vertex) mange to get out of the skyroom then the engine wont render the sky anymore therefor what you see is only the areas that are renderd .. all other parts will copy the parts that were renderd before because they aren't cleared.. because you're out of the skyroom which has the skybox shader.

the visual glitches occur whenever you are greatly outside of the normal map. the same thing occurred when me and my friend got smashed under the map by a scarab. the loading there is just what happens when the game is attempting to figure out what part of the map yourre on.

as you said the trigate teleports youto other places. but they wont let you teleport directly... bungie is a smart and curious disgning group so they add a little more and you have to get on top of the hill. this scrapped idea was not totally left out. as what I think you see is out other trigates they have placed throuout the map and/or game.

It's probably just a texture fluke. Also, when you talk about being 'erased' from the map, it's just the game removing you and the surrounding geometry from memory. Your viewport (player camera) is inside an area that's been drawn on screen, but when the frame is redrawn, it can't 'see' what to draw, so it repeats the previous frame.
