@Cricket90050 Wow, thanks! I was just trying to look that up. How did you know all that? The drummer/back up vocalist is HOT! Good to know some tidbits about her daughter too.
This is the best FU anthem song ever! And I'm not mad or bitter about anything right now, but this is the go to song when you need to vent. I never saw a pic of him before, holy crap, he is georgious!
Thanks Robbie for making me want to get out of my chair and dance ♥ !
@mjpw12 I went to WikiAnswers and someonelse asked who she was. The answer was "Shiela E" which isn't true. I'd like to know too. She is also with him in the video for Wot's it to ya. She is definitely FINE.
The original version of this song (found only on the album) faded out like it was the end of the song, then slowly came back in with percussion and horns, then back to full volume with the hook for another minute or two. Anybody know where I can find a download of this version?
What amazes me about this song is that it charted on the Top 10 on the R&B Charts as well, and I THINK back in 1986/1987, the video was on heavy rotation on BET. I GUESS the song has urban/soul rhythms, but I also think this was a case when Robbie's label and his people submitted the song to that market (as well as the Pop outlet markets) and it worked successfully, as it did very well in both market s and was a hit!!!
@marcusrob02 Well, after doin some thinking...I figured that since this song was a cover of Star Search winner and R&B/Gospel singer Beau Williams' version from three years earlier (that Robbie wrote), I'm guessing that the R&B/Soul/Urban market were SORTA aware already of the song and familiar with it. Then again, I'm not sure if Beau's version was a single or just an album cut.. If it was a single, I hope and pray he did a video for it..I'm DYING to see it! lol
the economics of those now living in amidst the people's depression is a good backdrop to this song which means that is how life goes. An apathetic attitude to what the banks and the bushians did to this country
@samjackflash excellent comment!! tLook I hate most dance music. Probably very few songs in the disco era or early 80s songs like this that are not errors to me. I like to dance to un-danceable songs But this song is just cool. Over the top but still cool. Would like to hear a hard rock version of this still though .. sorry.
@borderlineretarded NO, NO and HELL TO THA NO!!! Aarron Neville is NOT related to Robbie Nevil. Different spelling, different family tree. I'm just saying!!!

Its funny how the black brudders from the gutter try to establish a 'culture' on ass. Are we back in the animal kingdom with redcoloured asses like baboons??
Try to participate in culture by means of your intellect, taste, and expressive emotions, not by '' she's got a big ass; she must be black" .
Whatever happened to Robbie Nevil ? The guy had a soulful voice - sort of like Michael Bolton, Michael Mcdonald. He never had any other hits that I'm aware of? Great song!
I saw this on a tribute to the 80's on one of the music TV channels yesterday. I "recorded" it back in the 80's - loved the music, but also the video - very compelling. He had almost a beautiful face - like a female model's at the time. Glad he's still doing so well, writing for others, and making bucks.
I am not embarrassed to admit that I have owned this album twice... And also bought the rights for my Zune... I love this guy. And to anyone who says the guy dropped off the planet.... The guy is still writing tons of Blue Eye Soul for others to this day... You Rock Robbie!
Man this is an underrated gem for sure. Robbie has certainly proven himself as an industry veteran with the longevity he's established as a writer and producer.
But damn he has a fantastic voice and he's a dope musician too. Not too mention he was really fine ;-) It's too bad his career didn't take off the way it should have....he had the chops for sure.
I'm glad we get to enough the work he did release though. It's GREAT stuff...
"An underrated gem"? The song hit number two! Radio and MTV played this freakin' song incessantly back in the day. If it weren't for this tune, no one would have ever even heard of Robbie Nevil. There's a reason the man dropped off the radar, by the way.
Good song? Yes. Gem? Sure, why not. Underrated? Not in the least.
Dropped off the radar? The man is one half of the songwriting team for Disney mega hits Hannah Montana, HSM, Raven, and the Cheetah Girls. He's worked with dozens of other artists such as Beyonce, Christina, Jordan sparks, Jesss McCarthy, etc.
He hasn't gone anywhere. He's always been a songwriter and a musician.
Even though it was a hit, this song doesn't nearly garner the kind of attention now that plenty of other dance songs of the 80s do. Besides it's just my opinion.
Please forgive me. Perhaps I should have followed "dropped off the radar" with "as a solo artist", or "as a serious act", or "to anyone other than parents of prepubescent girls"!
But seriously, before we get too swept up in the teenybopper drama here, let's be fair when dishing out the credits. He is one half of the duo of Gerrard/Nevil, who are but two of a bellyfull of writers who churn the bubblegum-flavored bile which those juvenile Disney acts so mindlessly regurgitate.
I do have to admit, I have absolutely no idea what you mean when you suggest this song doesn't garner the attention that other 80's dance songs do. It's certainly every bit as atrociously appealing as any other 80's dance hit. Of course, that's only my opinion. I do know one thing, however. Robbie Nevil owes an awful lot to Rick Astley, because if not for "Never Gonna Give You Up", millions of people would have been RobbieRolled by now! Ah, well. C'est la vie.
"C'est La Vie" is a popular song by American singer Robbie Nevil from his self-titled debut album in 1986. Written by Nevil with Duncan Pain and Mark Holding, it was first recorded by gospel singer Beau Williams for his 1984 album, Bodacious!. Nevil's version spent two weeks at #2 on the U.S. singles chart in January 1987 and remained in the top 40 for 16 weeks.
Loved this song at 8 yrs. old and still love it now. I use to sing it like "say don't leave" lol! Thanks for posting this one brings back good memories.
I can remember singing this when it came on the radio when I was like 5yr old. I have been looking for this song for like 23yrs. Thanks for the post!!!!!
Vh1 left out some good One-Hit Wonders on it's special, no?....How can you forget Johnny Hates Jazz "Shattered dreams"....Level 42 "something about you"....Love and Rockets "so alive"....Murray Head "One night in Bangcock"???
Mr Neville was a pretty boy back then and I thought at the time he had a grand future ahead of him. then after this album he disappeared never to be heard of again.
Her name is Bree. Not sure of the spelling. She had her own band back then (all female I believe). They used to play at Sash in Studio City (L.A.). I met her a few times. Great singer and drummer. Not sure what they are doing now. Exciting days back then.
Thank You ! I have been looking for this song. But didn't really know what it was saying because when i was a little girl I was singing stay or leave stay or leave LOL! I had no idea who sung it either. Most 80's music I can remember the video as well as the music like "Slegehammer" by Peter Gabriel unforgetable one of me and my brother's favorites. Night Flick will Mr. Bill unforgetable!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ARE YOU PEOPLE SERIOUS !??!! -- I only clicked onthis b/c I was looking at C'est la Vie by ELP (a far SUPERIOR song & artist/group) This song is so GAY.Check out the movie : Ford Fairlaine -there is a guy in the movie as a puppet pop singer ,who Im sure was modeled after this guy.

I would have never guessed this was made in 1986. I thought maybe the early 90's.

Her name is Bree. Not sure of the spelling. She had her own band back then (all female I believe). They used to play at Sash in Studio City (L.A.). I met her a few times. Great singer and drummer. Not sure what they are doing now. Exciting days back then.

Robbie took this to #1, and then faded away. Quel domage, because he brightened up the 1980s for a brief, shining moment.
