I saw loads of these chinese lanterns flying over our town on new years eve shortly after midnight, it was quite clear that they were lanterns by the speed they were going at, and also you could see the flame kept almost going out at some points..no doubt some people that saw them were probably convinced they'd seen ufo's though.

Any city with a Chinatown has places that sell them. They're illegal in some US states due to fireworks restrictions but that doesn't stop their sale. A few of the major fireworks outlets in the South sells them. The company that took over the fireworks display for the Boston 4th of July celebration uses them. It was really cool to watch them float overhead into Cambridge.

They're not rare at all, you just need to know where in town to get them.
