Yes, it's pretty much exactly based on "Simon of the Desert" right down to the dialogue. Somehow the story seems much more sinister in this video. Perhaps it has to do with the ominous subtext of the song. Think about it...think hard!
a song and video like this have never been made before or ever will be made again. and that's why i feel so sad whenever i watch this video, even though i should be happy that something like this even exists at all. :)

Pretty important pop icons, surpassed in relevance by few. Neutral Milk Hotel shine with more beautiful pain that only an American band from Louisiana could have.
Fantastic track from a fantastic band, but a shit video. Doesn't seem to have any connection to the spirit of the song at all - like it was made by someone who didn't really care much for the band. I dunno.
@markblyn The band are actually huge film nerds from what I understand (I read in an interview they took their name from the Shohei Imamura film "The Pornographers"). The video is essentially a mini-remake of a Luis Bunuel film "Simon of the Desert" so I'm assuming the band had a hand in it.
The Polish bartender at a Mob bar in syracuse kept the internet in a notebook in 1987. When Jesus was told he had really lost it by THIS bARTENDER The pictures of missing children) WHO wouldn't help him find them. Jesus would have offed him.
waw, the nineties were full of bands like that. They are talented, but .... always the same sound , arghhh, maybe i've heard too much of that sound in the nineties///

Wilco. Do you know who the band members are? Who wrote the song, who is the guitar player, who if the male vocalist who is the female vocalist, and who is the drummer and the bassist?
There are three bandmembers in the video. The bartender is Dan Bejar - who writes and performs on some songs, but not this one.
As the couple enter the club, the person to their immediate right (our left) is Blaine Thurier, the keyboardist and videographer who also directed this video.
The red headed guy to his left is Carl (AC) Newman, who wrote and sings this song with Neko Case, who isn't in the video. You can find lots of videos of her on the web.
I love the band in this video, especially the singer.
I mean, I have to admit that I'm pretty disappointed that this was the The New Pornographers song i heard and the band inside the video didn't turn out to be the actual band.
The female singer is Nicki Clyne. An actress who's best known for playing Cally Henderson Tyrol on Battlestar Galactica. Apparently she was a friend of the band and the actual singer couldn't do the video because she was going to be on Canadian Idol or something when they were filming. As far as I know the rest of the band in the video is the actual band.
Good song, I'm getting into this band more now, I'll definitely look up more of their songs. Kind of funny, The bartender at 1:10 looks similar to Jason Finn, Drummer of The Presidents of the United States of America, Who worked as a bartender. Probably just a coincidence but I'd like to find out if it is or not.
Electric Version and Mass Romantic are two of the best pop records I've heard in a loooooooong ass time. It's a shame they never made a video for Electric Version's title track though, I love that song. Unless I just haven't found it yet or something.
gidday lockyer - you have just convinced me to pop along to see them tonite in Auckland. will attempt to make conversation with the band afterwards over a cool refreshing ale. wish me luck mate
@lockyer the keyboards might have done an okay job of filling the void left by the lack of her voice but they could never fill the void left by not seeing her rip on people on stage in between songs. haha
Probably one of my favorite New Pornographers songs after all these years. This song never fails to bring me up. Electric Version had more songs per capita that I really liked than all the others. They're all good, but that one stood out for me. The video is pretty good too. Love the girl in it. I love her looks and apparent sexy freedom. Neko's vocals are excellent on this and show her soaring strength. They were pretty good in concert too. They played all my favorites including "Letter..."!!!
I wish people would dance like that at real New Pornographers shows. Maybe they were trying to inspire their fans. Saw them last month in Minneapolis and it was a sea of head-bobbing white people.
I've loved this song for years, but I just now saw the video. The video is a reinterpretation of sorts. They basically stole the ending of Simon of the Desert, a Luis Bunuel film. Check it out and you'll see. I'm impressed that they're familiar with it.
lol awesome video, awesome band - they are complete unknowns over here in the UK though sadly. The guy dancing at the end reminds me of Crispin Glover in Friday the 13th part 4 ;-)
Oh my gosh, y'all- this is a remake of a 1960's mexican movie about Saint Simeon the Stylite saint- the devil tempts him off of his column, and it ends up in a beatnik club. Kudos to new pornographers, exquisite taste
I can't believe that this band isn't more popular. I've watched this video about 12 times and I love their albums, but I can't get my friends into them.
OK, I was just dissing the New Pornos' videos, but I must say, this one was pretty sweet. "You'll just have to take it--take it til the end!" and then the choreographed dance? Hell yes. (And is that Dan Bejar as the bartender, deigning to appear?)
I first saw this video while I was waiting for my daughter to buy something in a trendy clothing store. They had it up on a TV in the store, playing random music videos. The rest of them kinda stunk, but this one just riveted me. I've gone and watched it several times on the Web, and listened to the song relentlessly. And I'm freaking 55 years old!!!!
Brilliant video inspired by Luis Buñuel's surrealist film "Simón Del Desierto" (Simon Of The Desert) which itself was based on the story of St. Simon Stylites, who spent thirty seven years on top of a pillar preaching Christianity to travelers and pilgrims before his death in 459 AD
