  • a song and video like this have never been made before or ever will be made again. and that's why i feel so sad whenever i watch this video, even though i should be happy that something like this even exists at all. :)

  • 2:08 Totally looks like Mary Elisabeth Winstead!

  • Yeah what the fuck is up with this shit video?

  • Pretty important pop icons, surpassed in relevance by few. Neutral Milk Hotel shine with more beautiful pain that only an American band from Louisiana could have.

  • weeds have an awesome soundtrack :)

  • wow...i never thought watching "Simon in the Desert" in class would help me recognize what this music video is based off of...

  • i like the part when jesus has a seizure on the dancefloor

  • "Come down and return to the world, indulge yourself, until pleasure sickens you. Then will you be near me..." Best line ever!!!

  • How in the hell did I only hear about these guys today?

  • Fantastic track from a fantastic band, but a shit video. Doesn't seem to have any connection to the spirit of the song at all - like it was made by someone who didn't really care much for the band. I dunno.

  • @markblyn The band are actually huge film nerds from what I understand (I read in an interview they took their name from the Shohei Imamura film "The Pornographers"). The video is essentially a mini-remake of a Luis Bunuel film "Simon of the Desert" so I'm assuming the band had a hand in it.

  • Jesus much?

  • where the hell are the view, this bands awesome.

  • lol

  • The Polish bartender at a Mob bar in syracuse kept the internet in a notebook in 1987. When Jesus was told he had really lost it by THIS bARTENDER The pictures of missing children) WHO wouldn't help him find them. Jesus would have offed him.

  • Go Ryan!!!!!

  • funny how they make fun of simeon stylites

  • neko case <3

  • Wow that guy looks about to blow a load in his shorts at the end!

  • The last dance, is that not the same dance as Austin powers!!!

  • tribute / homage to the film "simon of the desert" by Luis Buñuel-- N.P.'s videos are great (along with the music)

  • waw, the nineties were full of bands like that. They are talented, but .... always the same sound , arghhh, maybe i've heard too much of that sound in the nineties///

  • waw, the nineties were full of bands like that. They are talented, but .... always the same sound , arghhh, maybe i've heard too much of that sound in the nineties///

  • hawhy there is no chat on you tube.. Btw anyone up for some cam chat^^

  • @HildaBennett1

    ok, anytime :)

  • Does anyone know what the blonde girl's name is?

  • The girl in the blue jump suit at 2:40 dances really well.

  • No, none of those people playing instruments or singing are members of the New Pornographers.

  • Wilco. Do you know who the band members are? Who wrote the song, who is the guitar player, who if the male vocalist who is the female vocalist, and who is the drummer and the bassist?

  • There are three bandmembers in the video. The bartender is Dan Bejar - who writes and performs on some songs, but not this one.

As the couple enter the club, the person to their immediate right (our left) is Blaine Thurier, the keyboardist and videographer who also directed this video.

The red headed guy to his left is Carl (AC) Newman, who wrote and sings this song with Neko Case, who isn't in the video. You can find lots of videos of her on the web.

  • I can't believe they pulled the live version from the Fonda Center. Major bummer.

  • I love the band in this video, especially the singer.

I mean, I have to admit that I'm pretty disappointed that this was the The New Pornographers song i heard and the band inside the video didn't turn out to be the actual band.

But on the other hand, they still rock!

  • The female singer is Nicki Clyne. An actress who's best known for playing Cally Henderson Tyrol on Battlestar Galactica. Apparently she was a friend of the band and the actual singer couldn't do the video because she was going to be on Canadian Idol or something when they were filming. As far as I know the rest of the band in the video is the actual band.

  • Thank you for that! Nicki Clyne is the awesome one then :) when she dances to THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS that is

  • I love this bands name.

"Rock and Roll is the New Pornography", thank you for the quote Jimmy "I have sinned" Swaggert.

  • i found this band of zach braffs site

  • weeds

  • who made this video?!?!?

  • I had no idea until today this video was based on the film "Simon of the Desert" by Louis Buenel.

  • nanananana like it

  • Good song, I'm getting into this band more now, I'll definitely look up more of their songs. Kind of funny, The bartender at 1:10 looks similar to Jason Finn, Drummer of The Presidents of the United States of America, Who worked as a bartender. Probably just a coincidence but I'd like to find out if it is or not.

  • By "Similar to" I should have changed that a bit and said his hair is messy... Like Jason's is now. Jason's face is much different.

  • The bartender is Dan Bejar (aka Destroyer) and part-time member of The New Pornographers.

  • Electric Version and Mass Romantic are two of the best pop records I've heard in a loooooooong ass time. It's a shame they never made a video for Electric Version's title track though, I love that song. Unless I just haven't found it yet or something.

  • I love Nicki Clyne! HOT!

  • what a great fucking song

  • @Zobor111 The girl from Battlestar Galactica!!!

  • i love the girl in orange! sexy! u go girl!

  • In my opinion these guys are the best and most original pop group since England's "XTC".

    Like fuck !!! lol

  • Simeon Stylites!!!!!

  • saw them in melbourne last saturday night, to be honest, best night of my life!

Don't miss them if they come to your city!!!

They played all the best songs, and they even came back on stage after finishing to do an extra 3 songs :D finishing with my 'my slow descent'.

I'm seriously considering travelling to another country just to see them perform again! wow + 1000000

  • Latin (maybe it's used in French too)

  • Neko is such a good singer her voice can probably cure cancer.

  • Also, can someone tell me what "Vade retro" "Vade Ultra" means? I've been looking everywhere.

  • Vade retro: move back

    Vade ultra: go beyond

  • Thank You!

    What language is that? French?

  • Update: saw them last night and they were totally awesome.

Unfortunately Niko wasn't touring with them but her sound was ably filled by their keyboard player.

In my opinion these guys are the best and most original pop group since England's "XTC".

And....they played a freakin awesome cover version of "Don't bring me down" by ELO!

    Do NOT miss this band!

  • gidday lockyer - you have just convinced me to pop along to see them tonite in Auckland. will attempt to make conversation with the band afterwards over a cool refreshing ale. wish me luck mate

  • Seriously man, you won't be disappointed.

    Good luck mate!

  • @lockyer the keyboards might have done an okay job of filling the void left by the lack of her voice but they could never fill the void left by not seeing her rip on people on stage in between songs. haha

  • seeing them in perth tonight! Whoot whoot

  • sophisticated pop ear candy,I love them, going to see them in Melbourne this month.LAURENCE. j

  • Probably one of my favorite New Pornographers songs after all these years. This song never fails to bring me up. Electric Version had more songs per capita that I really liked than all the others. They're all good, but that one stood out for me. The video is pretty good too. Love the girl in it. I love her looks and apparent sexy freedom. Neko's vocals are excellent on this and show her soaring strength. They were pretty good in concert too. They played all my favorites including "Letter..."!!!

  • This is inspired in the film "Simon del Desierto" from Luis Buñuel.

  • this clip is strange

  • chheky video

  • DAmn, I hope the hottie in this vid is at their Auckland gig next month. And can someone tell me, is Nico an actual member these days?

  • I meant to post that comment under the "Challengers' video, where you do see the chick from the band...and she's hot!

  • Wow...that's a song that sticks in your head. Greetings from USA! Nice song!

  • FIN

  • best song on electric version

  • Thats Nicky Cline, not Neko Case

  • I did not realize the female singer of NP is so hot...nice

  • i love the new pornographers! they have a lot of really great songs

  • OK, lip readers - what are they actually saying (blonde at the pedestal, Dan at the bar, blonde at the bar)?

BTW, for those who asked, on the TNP board, Blaine said the blonde's name is Rachel Wainwright, IIRC)

  • I wish people would dance like that at real New Pornographers shows. Maybe they were trying to inspire their fans. Saw them last month in Minneapolis and it was a sea of head-bobbing white people.

  • -sea of OLD head-bobbing white people.

  • @simonpeter6 I let loose when I saw the New Pornographers. It was healthy:)

  • @simonpeter6 that's just Minneapolis, learned from Prince

  • I've loved this song for years, but I just now saw the video. The video is a reinterpretation of sorts. They basically stole the ending of Simon of the Desert, a Luis Bunuel film. Check it out and you'll see. I'm impressed that they're familiar with it.

  • This song was put in the film MAIL ORDER BRIDE.One of the most Brilliant movies ever made!!!

  • Ryan Robbins looks so yummy in this video.

  • best dancing ever!

  • Who's that miming Neko Case's part's?

  • Nicky Cline, Cally on Battlestar Galactica

  • Hot.

  • She is a Fox. And great at her role in BSG.

  • This video will probably go down in history as one of our generation's finest videos.

  • this was in weeds

  • lol awesome video, awesome band - they are complete unknowns over here in the UK though sadly. The guy dancing at the end reminds me of Crispin Glover in Friday the 13th part 4 ;-)

  • the "nah nah nah nah nah nah..." part of this song is one of the most addictive and catchiest parts of a song I've heard in all me life"

  • I fell in love with this song when first heard. A genuise wrote it! Love the girls in the video.

  • Nicki's really good at lip singing

  • agreed.. shes pretty super rad... ive decided

    those canadians are alright

in related news.. im seeing the new pornographers in two weeks... woo!

  • Who is the blonde girl?

  • Yea, seriously who is that? Someone said it was Neko but doesn't look anything like her. Looks more like Jenna Jameson.

  • I'm referring to the blonde main character...

  • no, it's the Fanta lady. :P

  • sublime

  • good song but the only one i found i like by them so far... might have to do with Nicki Clyne being in the video....

  • the best band in years!!

    i love TNP!!!

  • This is my new official fav. band.

  • it doesnt get much better than that.

  • i love that dance in 2.32-3.00...sexy...

  • Is Neko Case the brunette?!

  • haha no. she is the redheaded lass in the photograph the guy slips to the bartender. the brunette on stage is caily!

  • You can see the original by renting Simon of the Desert by Luis Bunuel.

  • That's it? Just a straight lift of "Simón del desierto?" Lame

  • Yes, when will directors of music videos stop ripping off Bunuel films from the 60s? We demand more from our videos!!!

  • hahahaha

  • You will never see a new porno's that is not original and thought provoking. Very special band.

  • Great Song, great band.

  • vade retro!

  • I love how the New Pornographers almost never appear in their own videos. The band playing in the video isn't them.

  • Yes she plays spezialist cally in bsg

  • II love this song and video! One of the best videos in recent years.

Does anyone know if the girl with the bangs and the shirt over her shoulder plays Callie on BSG? It looks like her but I'd like to be sure.

  • Who's the blonde girl in this video? It's not neko case..

  • She´s Gwen Stacy!

  • coolest video ever!! I love you, New Pornographers!

  • there is another video with nicki clyne its called "Nicki Clyne in Tiki Bar TV" hope you will like it

nice greetings to all nicki clyne and The New Pornographers fans

  • I love watching this video, it is the shit.

  • hey it's Nicki Clyne!

  • Luis Buñuel "Simon Del Desierto" (1965)

  • Oh my gosh, y'all- this is a remake of a 1960's mexican movie about Saint Simeon the Stylite saint- the devil tempts him off of his column, and it ends up in a beatnik club. Kudos to new pornographers, exquisite taste

  • Who is the woman who coaxes the guy to step down from his pedestal?

  • Neko Case

  • No it's not!

  • ah.....i just LUV this song!! AHH!!! yay. cool vid also.

  • such a great song and video. Why so few hits?

  • LOL - Two losers standing at the bar entrance.

  • I think one of those guys is AC Newman.

  • I know, I was just kidding... AC, NK & TNP rock!

  • Love the guy in the sunglasses.

  • Vade retro! This is my favorite song. This band/combination of bands can do no wrong.

  • I can't believe that this band isn't more popular. I've watched this video about 12 times and I love their albums, but I can't get my friends into them.

  • I totally agree, this band is special. One of my friends said they sounded too pop. What the hell is wrong with that? I think they're great.

  • vade retro! God, I love this song :-)

  • nanananaaaaaaa nananaaaaaa nananaaaaaaa 60's For ever!

  • Simon del desierto! Luis Buñuel! You've seen the trailer, now watch the film, guys. (The song is not featured, though. Typical!

  • OK, I was just dissing the New Pornos' videos, but I must say, this one was pretty sweet. "You'll just have to take it--take it til the end!" and then the choreographed dance? Hell yes. (And is that Dan Bejar as the bartender, deigning to appear?)

  • I first saw this video while I was waiting for my daughter to buy something in a trendy clothing store. They had it up on a TV in the store, playing random music videos. The rest of them kinda stunk, but this one just riveted me. I've gone and watched it several times on the Web, and listened to the song relentlessly. And I'm freaking 55 years old!!!!

  • Brilliant video inspired by Luis Buñuel's surrealist film "Simón Del Desierto" (Simon Of The Desert) which itself was based on the story of St. Simon Stylites, who spent thirty seven years on top of a pillar preaching Christianity to travelers and pilgrims before his death in 459 AD

  • nice song!

  • Come down and return to the world.

Indulge yourself until pleasure sickens you.

Then you will be near me.

  • The part where the guy starts dancing creeps me out... other than that, this video is AMAZING.

  • The Pat Benatar dance is brilliant and funny cause the kids of the 80s can see that right away.

  • Not quite sure what the little Pat Benatar style dance has to do with anything, but a fabulous song by a fabulous band.

  • OK, I already love this band and this song! That's a great vid, and now Nikki Clyne is like 10 times cooler in my eyes. Sweet!

  • Nikki Clyne??? :D YES

  • no she is not. she's just acting. the woman singing is Neko Case. This is from the album, Electric Version, a wonderful album.

  • zomg Nikki Clyne is in this band?

  • I LOVE you, 'the laws have changed' video!

  • Great song.
