@rcala1980 A toothpick (wooden or plastic) would probably work. But, as I've said numerous times before...and maybe I don't need to tell you this, but I'm saying it anyway...DO NOT try this technique on records that you care about or want to keep in good condition! If you stick a toothpick in the grooves of your records it WILL damage them! You have been warned.
@lady12480 Thanks! It is an album of bird sounds but for some reason, there is also a track or two of music on there as well. Not sure why. But that's probably the "guitar sounding part" you heard.
i was gonna make make a joke and write "haha nice bird chirping album!" ...but then i read a few comments and found out it really was birds chirping :l
@Avenger2680 It's called "The Ultimate Canary Album" so, yeah, birds, tripped out birds on acid trying to freak yer beak. Actually, there's one track of music on there too, not sure why.
I used to do this 50 years ago! My mother used to get so mad at me for leaving pins on the carpet and damaging her records lol. Eventually I discovered that putting the needle at 90 degrees to the diaphragm played the sound better.
@barnett256 Actually, for the purpose of this demonstration, the higher frequencies of the bird sounds worked a little better (i.e. were more audible) than music. You see, a simple explanation, nothing to get upset about :-)
@wadavison (replying to barnett256) And, by turning it by hand, if you used music, it would be difficult to match the speed rate exactly and consistently.
the money your going to spend replacing your records you could just buy a turntable an listen to records the way they were meant to be listened to. you can whine to this guy after your records get scratched to shit and are unplayable.
@wheelieblind As I've mentioned before numerous times (including the original description that accompanies the video), THIS TECHNIQUE WILL DAMAGE YOUR RECORD! Do not attempt this on any vinyl that you want to keep in good condition! Doesn't matter what tip you use.
This is an example of why I've always said a record is ALIVE!! All it takes is a needle or even your fingernail (on a 78) to pick up the vibrations. But I would never do this to just any record.
Once again, I am well aware that what I am doing here will damage the record. I made that very clear in my comments when I initially posted this video. This album is one of hundreds that I've collected over the years specifically for the purpose of abusing in various ways in live performances. Most of these records were found in the trash or bought cheap at yard sales, thrift stores, etc. and were in exceptionally bad condition when I acquired them.
Very nice! Only thing is I would put the pole that holds the record on an axis and have the needle solid over it so it doesnt slip because that will damage the record
Thanks! But I guess if you "heard" the subliminal messages then they can't be very effective...which explains why I haven't been receiving those million dollar cheques I was expecting!
My idea was to have as few components as possible. In this instance, aside from the LP itself, there's just the chopstick and the container with the pin stuck in it. But I have noticed a few times when performing with this set-up (or its electric equivalent which uses a cartridge/needle/cable in place of the plastic bucket) that it likes to slip around when I'm spinning it. Putting the bottom end of the chopstick into something with a small depression in it might really help. Thanks for the tip!
It's creative. I'll certainly give him that. What I don't understand is why gamma68 has to go putting people down and throwing insults around. It isn't as though you invented the iPod yourself. People who live in third world countries were born into the situation in which they exist and can't be blamed for their lack of progress any more than you can be lauded for your use of electronics.

yeah, ass-backward third-world bullshyit. Linn Chinn here should leave the village and find an IPOD. Can you even spin 33 -1/3 rpm with a greasy chopstikk?
im prty sure the only thing he does wrong is push a metal needle into the grooves, you can touch records as much as you want on the surface. and if it wasnt a metal needle, puttin it in the grooves wouldnt matter either
This is a good observation and I'm sure that holding the cup is deadening the sound somewhat. It's not stopping all the vibrations however. If it were you wouldn't hear anything at all. So it's a trade-off. Holding the cup dampens the sound a bit but it still works. Not holding the cup means it just falls over and doesn't work at all. One idea to help this situation (and I might try this) is to suspend the cup from some threads instead of holding it with my hand.
I haven't tried that but I bet it would work, if you could get a piece of wood with a sharp enough tip to fit in the grooves. A toothpick might do it. It might not be as loud (or it might be louder. Who knows?).
Same warning: don't do this with records you care about. It is damaging.
