I use Siligum all the time to make moulds for my Precious Metal Clay work, it's a brilliant product so if people are having problems it's either you've not used enough white (hardner), or not mixed it thoroughly enough (no streaks) or it's a duff batch & needs returning!!!!
I have moulds that are now 5 years old & are used on a weekly basis by both myself & my students! It's tougher than you think!
How come I bought this same product and mine does not "cure". I mean it is supposed to set in 5 to 15 minutes after mixing equal parts and -EVEN HOURS LATER- all I got is soft light-blue clay! If you ask me the product does not work. What else should I do?
@Likodemus Id take it back to where you got it. It does say that it has a shelf life also so it might be worth checking that out. But it does seem like it is faulty in some way.
@TheRealMythril Thank you! I spoke with the vendor but she doesn't want to take it back nor give me a refund. Guess I'll have to wait for her boss. I feel so disappointed right now! Thanks for answering!! and for sharing your knowledge with us all.
is there a reason you went with plaster over resin? great vid I really appreciate the tutorial.
I've heard of people using back massager's or anything with a vibrating component strapped down to a table so that you turn it on and the bubbles come out.
mix childs white school glue in with your plaster and water it will give the plaster both strength and flexibility it wont be bendy but you find it loses that crumbleability it as round the edge. its somthing you have to play around with until you find what strength you want..
this might be a strange question... but have you ever tried to paint the silicone? With for example akrylics... is it possible or will the paint just peel off?
@KillerQueenL I havent tried to paint it, but its used because of its non stick properties, so I would have my doubts about paint being able to adhere to it. It is also used for ovenware and burnt stuff just flakes off it. If you ever try it, post a vid response I'd love to see it
@TheRealMythril ...NOTHING sticks to silicone but Silicone. NO paint of any kind sticks long term. The paint that does stick is coloured silicones of different viscosities that pass as paints. You can mix acrylic paint or coloured powders into the silicone as you make your mold to colour the whole thing. You can also colour small amounts and rub it on afterwards, with limited success.

if you cast in resin you wont loose the small details that usually get rubbed off when removing plaster cast from your mold, or i have in the past added a dash of concrete powder in with my plaster mix ;)
Depending on the psi of the plaster you can also carve pretty easily your plaster pieces and stylize them. Such as carving chaos or skaven ruins in the skulls and make another army specific mold:)
MOLD MAKING!!!!!!! I swore like a sailor when I did mine!!!!!! I want to do more myself. You'll LOVE it though!!!!!!! If you want cheap molding material get skulpy its an oil impregnated clay that never dries and you can press in a shape and pour in plaster and gently spread and pull out and re pour many more times and when it loses form just mash it up and re press. NOTE you will NOT get undercuts with his method. However you can press BOTH sides of an object down and then try to seam fit it:)!
@emtyach The package does not say, but it feels quite resilient as long as you treat it gently, Ive now used one of them 5 times and it looks no different than on the first use.
@GREATJOJOMAN The instructions do say you can use low meting point metal with it. If you do try it Id love to see a vid. It was your greenstuff molds than got me looking at different ways to make molds
lol just tried melting some of the white metal with my cig lighter, and it dosnt work well with greenstuff kind of makes the greenstuff bubble, allthough the metal has a very very low melting point so it will need further experementation
Aw wow I keep getting so stuck on this. I watch tons of vids, rock up at the companies websites to purchase the gear and then chicken out. Time and again! :P
But I reckon this vid might do the trick in helping me get there. So thanks as always Mythril for your fantastic vids! :D
If you wet your mould before pouring with plaster with "wet water " which is water witha little rinse aid or dish liquid it help set up and takes out air as well . Great first try well done . Beware casting is additive .. lol
Thanks for the advice, it was only my second attempt at mixing plaster and pouring moulds, so I know my technique is a bit shoddy. I am aware of Bruces stuff and will attempt to improve and hone my skills.
Great stuff! That came out really well. One thing I'd recommend is checking out the HirstArts website and looking at the "Casting Instructions" page. On there, he explains how to mix plaster for silicone mold casting. It really helped me a lot when I was learning how to mix plaster!
Casting and moulding is fun! and cheap. :) Plus the resin I use is much less brittle that forgeworld uses (which irks me on the cheap resin they use for the price I'm paying for their stuff). I use Oomoo and smooth-cast 300. I turn on my air compressor with the mold next to it as it vibrates the table for a few minutes to get any air out of the casting.
You can use a Vibrator ( personal or one for your back ) under the table it with shake the bubbles out very nicely. It may seem odd holding one to the underside but it works
Nice video, I'm hearing a lot about this siligum recently. It seems ok if you were looking for more professional products though you should check out Tomps dot com. Uk company and very helpful if you just give them a buzz. Keep up the great vids.
Where do you get the White thing?

@XRandomFandomX Not quite sure which white thing you mean, but if it is the table, then it is the old discontinued gw one.

hmmmm never thought of using Silicon to make molds i might gibe that a go, if theres one thing i hate its waiting for greenstuff molds to set.
i have some donated metal LOTR models that would go to better use being melted down for casting lol
great video XD
