I'm sort of confused, I recently enrolled in a class for anthropology... and it's really ambiguous and lofty in the methodology and approach. I think this area of research would fall more under Psychology, Sociology, and Perhaps even Biology... Anthropology is just the Holistic aspect of all of these aspects and can't really stand on it's own.
That's what I think right now -I'm sure it will change when I venture further into the class- but what does anyone else think?

Barging in on them is pretty dickish. I wouldn't be opposed to trying to communicate with these tribes in a way that won't "rock their world" so much. Y'know, send a few people with tiny cameras on their hats or shirt pockets. Something that doesn't scream "I'm a monster kablargh."

My first reaction to this was disgust. However, I realized these indigenous people are eventually going to be "contacted" no matter what. At about 2:35 he talks about the mineral wealth of this territory "gold, timber...", and how gold prospectors encountered some of these tribes. This spells disaster for the people living there. I don't think there's anything wrong with alerting these tribes to your presence in order to determine whether or not they're willing to make contact, but we need to be careful not to be intrusive and to take every precaution necessary to avoid exposing them to our diseases.
On the one hand, if a group is interested in learning about the world & receiving supplies, it's rather arrogant of us to deny them the opportunity simply because of our concerns about 'corrupting' (cont.)

I'm sort of confused, I recently enrolled in a class for anthropology... and it's really ambiguous and lofty in the methodology and approach. I think this area of research would fall more under Psychology, Sociology, and Perhaps even Biology... Anthropology is just the Holistic aspect of all of these aspects and can't really stand on it's own.
That's what I think right now -I'm sure it will change when I venture further into the class- but what does anyone else think?

In fact, Psychology and Sociology borrow from Anth and vice versa regularly (see Henrietta Moore) but Anth does stand on its own, in my opinion, because it seeks the emic and holistic perspective of human experience everywhere on the planet. We normally aim for a non-positivist approach to research. I hope your experience with anth improves!

yeah, its bad, adventure tourism has its benefits though- i believe its a scam, but in this case the tribes have an incentive to preserve their own culture. otherwise they would just get pressured into selling their land and hence their culture to mining or coffee companies. indigenous groups have to manage globalization somehow, its just the way it is.
