  • whats ur pc system?

  • I installed it perfectly but when i open it I get a black screen

  • Comment removed

  • i am wondering if someone could help me, i have installed cod4, am able to run the game in mp haven't tried sp yet. but it soo bloody laggy, what tweaks do i have to make to make it run smooth, i turned everything to min, soft edge and the few others are off but seems the same. have even tried cod1 but that just seemed hassle to install and getting it to play if it decided to load..

    thanks

  • Camper -.-

  • you can play every windows game on linux now and i have blak ops on my ubuntu 10.10

  • u played with the ef clan on the server. :D that's rare

  • Computers running Linux will evolve and eventually take over the world.

  • Here's a noon question. I'm used to playing on the console, but how do you play COD on a computer? I mean, can you still use the ps3 controller or is there a special controller jus for computers? This has been bugging me for some time now.

  • @mrmagoo662 Wow. Just ... wow.

  • @mrmagoo662 Is that a serious question? Well, in case it was: We basically aim and shoot with the mouse and move around and do all other actions with the keyboard, usually using a standard WSAD key setup. With some games you can plug in an XBox 360 controller.

  • I havent installed Linux on my computer, but I am really thinking of it, but I also want to play games like CoD..

I am completly noob at these(Whine and things) So is there any tut or any tip you can show on how to make it work properly?

    Thanks!!

  • @LSOA2 'playonlinux' works for some people. i use winetricks and have no prob with cod5

  • how to changer resolutions

  • For Linux nothing is impossible!

  • holy crap!! my windows 7 can do this in 10 minutes!

  • @DonkeyBonrProduction u hear that? its the sound of nobody caring! =)

  • @DonkeyBonrProduction yeah uh quick question, how much did windows 7 cost? at least $120 you say? so wait, it wasn't free? oh... thats a bummer.

  • I really feel the M16A4 is the best weapon in mw2. i unquestionably appreciate search and destroy with this particular gun. i absolutely clean up your opposing base and next blow these folks away when i make use of this weapon! everyone acquired the new map pack now? it's top of the class i have only downloaded it from mw2forfreeZinfo (replace Z with . ) the other week personally

  • did u now that windows games run smoother on linux

  • what is wine?

  • @scantace1 It's a program that does that linux can use windows files trough it

  • xD, I thougt that you were going to say at 3:10 As you can see... I suck

  • eeey guys when i download something and i click at wine there comes a error and i wanna know how to fix please help me because i wanna play mw2 or something else please help me

  • Iam kinda having some trouble with it. I start it up see the logo then it shuts down. im running wine 1.0.1 any help?

  • woow dude you rock

  • Linux is a true operating system. the game of call of duty 4, or 2, or warcraft3,..., or World of Warcraft run better on linux.

  • windows is fail :)

  • @miopizza I 'm sorry but that is not completely true because Linux isn't an operating system, it is a kernel. GNU/Linux is and operating system.

  • @nathan8BIT

someones like me don't want to say all the time "GNU/Linux" just "Linux", not the kernel, the operating system. If you check the wiki of "Linux"and "GNU/Linux" you will find the same thing.

  • @miopizza I really don't mind you saying Linux, I say linux as well, it is ok to say things like "I use linux" because you do. It just annoys me when people say things like "Linux is an operating system" because it isn't.

  • @nathan8BIT

it's generic dude, someones say it because all the distros are GNU/Linux, if you talk about suse you talk about fedora, mandriva, ubuntu, etc. It's just 'cause all the distros are Linux and some people like me prefer to say "Linux" instead "suse, or mandriva, or ubuntu..."

  • this game is awesome on xbox live.

  • But how does it work while linux doesn't support DX? Do you have to get openGL or something?

Hopefully someone knows what it is :).

  • openGL is in all linux.

You can install directx 9 through winedoors ;)

  • WINE implements DirectX. There is no OpenGL version of CoD:MW.

  • DX files in WINE

  • Putin Linux on the gaming map...I like that. Good job with the details.

  • how do I get linux???? I have vista on my pc, will I lose that???

  • you can get ubuntu easy just watch some vids on youtube. and you can choose if you want to get rid of vista or you can dual boot! if you don't know what that is then you don't need to be messing with a pc at all.

  • xD I know what dualboot is, but am not that sure that i whant it now... does not look that nice that i thoughyt it did... Ill stick with vista ...

  • @kingshoter11 u can install it in another harddisk.

  • wowowowow 5/5 i have a question xD how?

  • I'm really glad to see that gaming on Linux is getting more and more popular via emulators/layering programs.

I can't wait to get a new computer so I can put Linux on it and do the same stuff.

thanks for showing a good video and proving it can be done... and in great quality, I gotta say.

  • LINUX RULES!!!

  • wow those are pretty good graphics man!!

  • Punkbuster for this game should work fine in linux as it is running the Quake3 engine which has native support for linux, all Infinityward needs to do is open the cod4 source code and compile it for linux instead of windows and everything will work natively, Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory is the same game engine, has a stand alone installer FOR linux and runs with punkbuster natively within linux.

  • punkbuster does not work. that thing is not part of the game, you might be able to get it to run if wine had all the .dll's it needs but it prob doesn't

  • fps?

  • I had punkbuster trouble with the original CoD.

Kicked - Reason: Wrong Operating System

  • ión: español » inglés

Impressive, congratulations for the tutorial, the call of duty you work to perfection, What does your computer?

  • Wow, performance is VERY nice ;]

  • Should be modern warfare instead of modern combat. but otherwise nice vid

  • i personally prefer modern warfare over world at war

  • That son of a bitch!

  • Zomg we are all going to die!

  • that plays very smooth on the computer and its good to see call of duty 4 on linux

  • nice job man. that will shut some windows fanboys mouths out there that say that can do "cool" stuff like playing Call of Duty 4 on windows.

  • Don't get me wrong, I like Linux. But windows works far better with games. He can't even join PunkBuster games. While it is nice that this is possible, linux is not meant for games and it shows by the crappy performance.

  • Windows isn't 'meant' for games either, you know? No operating system is 'meant' for gaming, they're actually only meant for arithmatics, which are displayed in a variety of ways, like sound and video.

The game developers just 'support' Windows more than Linux. This doesn't mean Linux isn't meant for games, in fact, Linux would be a better platform for gaming.

The only reason it doesn't work a 100% yet is because Wine is still in development. Not every feature in every game has been covered.

  • Actually, windows is designed with the capability of games in mind(DirectX). While Linux can use Open GL, so can Windows. Wine will never be able to emulate every windows game perfectly. I triple boot with Linux, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. I can tell you that I never go on Linux to play a game, even though I have Wine installed and can play my windows games with the new NTFS read/write support, simply because it is not on par with the Windows performance.

  • what was meant was If people actually made games for linux, linux would probably be better than windows.

  • @Demoras Windows is "meant" for gaming because Microsoft supplies DirectX APIs which are meant to be used for games on Microsoft platforms. Linux is "meant" for gaming as well because it supports the OpenGL graphics library. Operating systems aren't "meant" for arithmetics, they're at a much higher level than that.

  • @dave3030 DirectX and OpenGL are APIs that perform various forms of arithmatics. The result of those calculations are then converted into something we can see or we can interact with. However, that is only the visible part. All that is the result of calculations.

Indeed, DirectX, OpenGL etc. can be programmed with at a high level, but high level code means very little to the computer. In the end all commands are converted to computer language, which is based around numerous calculations.

  • @Demoras I know, I work with embedded systems. You're thinking too low level and are missing the point completely.

  • @dave3030 Maybe I am, because I'm just thinking of how high level code is being converted to computer code. Of course that knowledge is kind of useless for the user and the programmer, unless your into assembly. Having these high level APIs does kind of make a certain OS "meant" for games. I'm just saying that most commands at their core are arithmatics (right?) and thus in theory any system is only "meant" for something in the degree that is has been supplied with the tools to apply this math.

  • @Demoras Pfft, Linux is shit for games, even the native ones.

  • @XxPoints2shopsxX That's not really true. Performance wise Linux is right up there with Windows. The only problem is that, well, there aren't a lot of Windows games available in a native format, so often we have to emulate the Windows environment and thus lose some performance. It's best to look at indie developers (Woflire, Overgrowth for instance). Linux has the exact same possibilities as Windows in terms of 3D performance (OpenGL has faster calls than Direct3D). They just need to be used.

  • @Demoras Did some research and Directx was better than Opengl, but as far as performance in Opengl I don't know.

  • @XxPoints2shopsxX How can you think DirectX is better than OpenGL if you don't know how they differ in terms of performance? Then no research was done.

  • @Demoras I meant in Opengl 4.

  • Heh, there is patches now to connect to punk buster servers on wine hq..

  • yeeeh WarDemon282 u have right

  • Can i get some help with this?

  • Not necessarily. If the game is well programmed and doesn't rely to heavily on Windows API's it should play at about native speed and if you're lucky it might actually play better than on Windows.

Secondly, why would a Mac lower your framerate? It has more to do with the programmers (code optimization) and the hardware.

  • i bet that you can get pb to run with wine, other wise its no use to have, becuase i know that alot of peoples favorite servers are PB protected

  • Unfortunately you won't get that in the foreseeable future. Those cheat protection techniques pull some really nasty tricks that shouldn't work on windows and for conceptional reasons won't be easily reproduced on Wine.

Parallels might be an option in the future though.

  • it's modern warfare :D

  • You shouldn't say "in" wine but on or with wine.

Because it's just seems you're talking of wine as an emulator wich isn't. That's why you can have sometimes better fps than in windows.

  • well it depends of the games. Because everything hasn't yet been programmed. But ok i stop :p

  • I know i will get modded down for pointing out the truth again, but most games run quite a bit slower on wine.

Worse, if it runs faster, it is very seldom because there is something implemented in a more optimized way in Wine or Linux... usually it is because it defaults to lower Quality settings in the driver or worse hits stubs in wine and by that loses details.

If you want to play but don't want to use Windows, better be satisfied with garage games or get an console. Wine is too much hassle.

  • do you need an OS to get linux in the first place? cuz i'm sick of bill gateshole and all his stupid crap.

  • No, you can get Ubuntu send to you free of charge or find other distros very cheap on Magazine cd/dvds. If you have some money to spare, you can get a boxed Linux distro for reasonable cheap that usually comes with a nice handbook and a couple of weeks installation support.

Cheapest way is just get it downloaded and burned to a CD at a friends place, but it is nice to have inet available in case you hit some problems during install anyway.

  • k, thanks for getting back to me bud :)

  • Cooperation, and unconditional kindness.

Youtube is the last place I expected to see it. I guess there is still hope after all.

  • Great vid thanx

  • Wow thats pretty good for wine, whats the specs of your PC?

  • omg, that guy that killed u the first time was me i think!

  • yes just another reason to go to linux wine you say love cod4 been playing since cod1

  • But How Is This Pass Able You Krusty Muck

  • I wasn't aware that Punkbuster was compatible with CS:S, I swore they used VAC.

  • Hmm they are using VAC according to Steam anyway

  • Yes they use VAC, so fuck what? Point is, no cheat protection, no fun because of cheaters and it isn't seldom at all.

  • It's the sme with GameGuard and some other anti cheat software. They use certain methods of monitoring that WINE simply cannot support in the same way that Windows supports the functions. Like, GameGuard is a rootkit, meaning it burrows into system files and stews in them to do it's job rather than running as an individual program itself. This low level access isn't there in WINE, so until they figure that out, anti-cheat software won't work properly if at all...

  • I'm not implying that the wine devs are lazy, much to the contrary. I just point out the ugly truth that you won't have fun on a public server when you don't have cheat protection.

Go and try for a week... see how much "fun" it is to get aimbotted and speedrunned by people who always know where you are standing.

  • punkbuster is a travesty, I know that.

  • Aimbot = no skill.

  • Aimbotter rating me down..

  • Awesome, I'm definitely gonna get this installed asap.

I recently installed Ubuntu on an external USB Drive to see if I liked it. It's a hell of a lot faster than windows but I was afraid I wouldn't be able to run my games...

This is really exciting to know that it can run COD4!

  • lol, you died from an aimbot...

  • Hmm, it looks like there is a little bit of lag. What video card do you have? I'm really interested in duel booting Windows with ubuntu. Has anyone tried it before?

  • on my windows I can't have the games on max graphics, but on linux I can and it doesn't mess with the performance one bit.

  • my wine makes games run faster.

  • When I use Wine, the programs go a lot slower than they would in Windows XP... Is that the same case with you?

  • Damn .ISO files don't work with DVD games....so how cam I suppose to run the game without loading up the CD?

  • did anyone else hear that dry coughing noise? thats windows, on its death bed.

bla bla bla a hundred noobs start talking utter rot about stuff they know nothing about. The same noobs who where a week ago, saying that linux is useless for games... Mate, wine is not even past beta yet, and look how it runs cod4, the power of opensource runs the internet, google, youtube, everything. And now that it can run windows games u think it might gain some extra credibility? IDIOTS! SHEEP! LOL. ok i'm done.

  • is linux better then windows xp/vista?? for games like cod4?

  • I installed Call of Duty 4 before this video and I just continued on to the part where you put the files and stuff. The game launches but it has a glow error and my Video card is an 8800GTS . So I want to re-install Call of Duty 4, but the uninstaller is not working.

How can I un-install Call of Duty 4 using terminal or something?

  • Delete the program files folder for COD4 (in activision) and reinstall. MAKE SURE you're getting the NO-DVD patch or else you'll have that glow error, or it might be caused by not patching WINE properly. -Wayne

  • HOLY SHIT ESTATICD! That is actually why i'm restartign! I get that fucking error... I think I pretty much got EVERYTHING installed (though my icons are fucked) and I don't want to get the noDVD patch, because it's illegal isn't it.

  • No DVD patch isn't illegal as far as I'm concerned - this is required to play the game and it's my prerogative to do what I need to do to achieve that goal.

  • Um Can programs similar to Game Jackal that can mount DVD games without creating virtual drives work on Linux?

  • who needs game jackal when you have mount? :)

    code:

    mount /mydir/game.iso /media/mycd/

or something to that effect.. try : mount --help

or using a frontend like gnome-mount? something like that anyway

  • Sorry I just don't want to download the no-DVD patch....

  • @JoraleMendoza no it isnt illegal if u have the orginal game disc then it is called a backup not crack

  • You may have to use regedit.exe in your /.wine/drive_c/windows directory, and delete any registry files for call of duty 4. I had this issue with reinstalling counter-strike. Be careful to NOT delete anything that does not belong to that game. Also, in ../drive_c/Program Files/InstallShield Installation Information, there are some randomly named folders with files called setup.ini. If you see something like this in setup.ini: Appname=Call of Duty 4: modern combat, then delete that folder.

  • or something is a better idea. in terminal type.

    wine-uninstaller

    and hit enter :P

i could be wrong, memory is a bit munted, otherwise just go to your menu for gnome/kde and others>wine>wine-uninstaller. you want the wine tools package

  • Only if punkbuster is compatible your all set....

  • This is awesome that a game that looks as good as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare can run on an Linux operating system with good frame rate.
