I've seen the pieces of still photos that Turner Movie Classics put together and it was pretty good, but nothing to what that the actual film woulod be.We can only hope a copy will turn up someday.Lon Chaney's makeup work is as good if not better than some of todays film makeups.
I bought a Lon Chaney 8mm film reel recently, and it's got some footage I don't recognize on it. The footage is of a vampire bat turning into a person and a skeleton in a coffin that turns into a full bodied man. If anybody can help me figure out what this may be, it would be greatly appreciated!
You've misunderstood how a good April Fool's gag works. You can alarm, or astonish the target of your prank, but never offer them something great that sounds somewhat plausible, and then leave them disappointed. And because it's an April Fool's gag, you don't finish it off by calling them names. It just comes off as mean-spirited
I remeber reading in TV guide that TCM (Turner classic movie channel here in the US) was going to show "London after midnight" on Halloween and I got really excitied. However it was the reconstructed version :( Such teases...
Awesome April Fool's Joke! ^_^ I really do hope that one day a copy of "London After Midnight" can be found. I heard there was a private collector in Canada who has a copy... But until that day, we'll all have to be satisfied with "Mark of the Vampire", which was a remake of sorts of "London" starring Béla Lugosi
Hehe, I knew it was a joke, but a very good one!!! Apparently sometime last year it was rumored that a complete copy of "London After Midnight" was found, but nothing has ever come from it. They did discover a complete version of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" which the Criterion Collection is resorting and releasing. And since you are reviewing similar-type Phantom films, review "The Man Who Laughs" I know you mentioned it once in a review and I think there are enough similarities to include it.
Wait Criterion is going to be ones to restore it? That would be amazing! I know they did a great job with M(another Fritz Lang film) I'm sure they'll do the same
I also heard the rumor and fell for it...for about 2 minutes. I still hold out hope it can be found. After all, they found a copy of previously lost film "The Passion of Joan of Arc" in a mental institution cupboard, of all places. I'm halway through "Man who laughs" and probably will review it
@eieiowens Um. Okay. I was told Criterion, obviously I was misinformed. There is no reason to be rude. I am just excited a complete version of the film has been found and will be restored and put on DVD.
@renaleria Not to further nit pick but it's not complete either, it's the most complete we will ever have but it's not 100%, more or less 95%. From what I've heard the restored new print will have the lost footage integrated into it to create a patchy cut. The lost footage was from 16MM and will show when it's itegrated in 35MM print, the top and left sides of the 16MM will have black bands along with scratches it's better then anything but I just wanted to warn you and those thinking perfection
@trans8010 OMG! Yes, I should have said "nearly complete" instead of "complete," though it is plain to see that my original comment was made over a year ago so my information was out-dated. I am just stoked that a masterpiece of cinema that was (for a very long time) incomplete was discovered with most of its material intact. As a fan of films, I find this very exciting.

Some people take a lon-n-n-n-ng time to catch on. (Nitrate decomposition on an 8mm film? Great!)

Yeah, Gaston Lerux was so "disgusted" by the film, he had all of those 1916 POTO copies burned.......!

Too bad this film is lost. But if you really want to know the story, see the 1935 remake "Mark of the Vampire".

Chaney's vampire will forever be to me the "host" of Creature Features on WGN channel 9 in Chicago in the early `70s.
An that stop motion "lost" footage was pretty good.
