I think she should have stuck with country music. She sounds waaayy better than most of today's country singers they play on the radio. Rachel Sweet can put Taylor Swift to shame all day long.
@dobbsiancant Actually, it's the other way around: Elvis, Rachel, then George.
Elvis originally recorded "Stranger in the House" in late '76 or early '77 with California country rock band Clover (aka The Shamrocks, with Huey Lewis- harmonica, and John McFee (Doobie Brothers)- pedal steel) for his debut lp, My Aim Is True [Stiff SEEZ 3]. It remained an unreleased outake until March '78, when it was the A-side of a bonus single [Radar SAM 83] included with the first 5,000 copies of...
...This Year's Model [Radar RAD 3]. (The B-side was a live cover of the Damned's "Neat Neat Neat.") %% Rachel Sweet's debut lp "Fool Around" [Stiff SEEZ 12] was released Oct. '78. Stiff/Columbia also released "Stranger in the House" as a single that year, but even if it preceeded the album's release, it was probably not by more than six months! %% Elvis and George Jones recorded their duet in March '79 for release in April '80 on George's My Very Special Guests lp. (It was also a single.)
@TheFpCassini you're right.my brain freeze or thirty years of cerebral cob-webs or something.didn't elvis write the song with george in mind?did they ever duet it?
I love the song, and Rachel's performance on it, but I wish the instrumental break had featured a steel guitar instead of a sax. I think it would have been a lot more fitting for the song. I love the Hammond B-3 in the background, though!
