This man started my journey to freedom.... I always think about how I would still be stuck in the quagmire that is bullshit society if it weren't for him..
sadly you dont know how good something is until it's gone. sadly that's the way it was for chris. he will never know how MUCH of an inspiration he was to both me and the millions of other people that have had the pleasure of hearing about his life. He doesn't just motivate me. he inspires me to think the same. because honestly what he made me realize is at the end of your life, are you TRULY happy with what you've done? i know he was. long live chris mccandless
to find myself at least once in the most ancient of conditions... no thank you... our ancestors did that for us and worked and sacrificed so that future generations wouldnt have to live like this... i'll take my loving family and day and modern day conveniences... but if i attempted this, i would not be so ill prepared because dont think for one moment as he was dying he regretted ever doing this...
I've been traveling since I finished high school; 4 years on the road, but roaming isn't enough; the true journey doesn't consist in seeing new landscapes but in having new eyes. Be yourself, be free.
i wish for everyone to find their calling and for everyone understand that family i worth the world, no matter what. me and my brother hated eachother while he lived here and now hes moved out and i talk to him as much as i can and every time we hang up, its like he's just died. but then i realize that hes always going to be my brother, dead or alive. and now i have true experiences that not alot of adults have even had the oppertunity to do. ive been camping in 'true' wilderness. and im happy.
i cant seem to find the song if recall its in the early part of the movie when he starts travelling hes in the car on a bridge or something. its more joyful kinda popish then the other songs in the movie.
After reading this amazing book I insisted on watching it. Chris McCandless or Alex Supertramp (whichever is preferred, I don't really know) is an amazing man with a philosophy of real education, adventure, and most importantly: life. Although I never met this man, he inspired me. Many people I have talked to an met say that there were some screws missing in his head, or he was just insane. I disagree. Emile (who is probably one of the greatest actors) did an amazing job with playing him!
This story is pretty incredible. I see so many people each day living their mundane-, 401k-, unionized-, PTO-, Medicare-filled lives only to find the day of retirement to be nothing particular at all. They die never really having LIVED!
this is a great movie, but questioning Chris´s McCandles decisions, it was pretty selfish, not thinkinh in his parents, his"girlfriend", all the people he met along the way, im not saying it was wrong, but he died alone, i`m thinking he could live being happy with the people that cares about him.. that form makes is 10 times more sad Oo... all the people that met him got a emotional dependance, that`s selfish to me. :(
It's important in life to not necessarily to be strong, but to feel strong...to measure youself at least once, to find yourself at least once in one of the most ancient conditions...
Eddie Vedder !!! Super this music ....I Love It ...The Movie What can I say.... only It is Super .....and real....I love it when a person takes life like it this ....Yes I try it to if I had the chance.....and I have .......Love to all in the world....

@todonnell777 Sensational comment. Summed up how we all have to live life, to face our fears .. and satisfy our needs and see the world, people and stories to tell.
I just figured out how to play this song on my banjo. Since this song characterized my first trip to the states in 2008, I get that sweet kick of happiness, and the feeling of having the whole world as your playground whenever I'm playing it or listening to it. It is probably one of the best songs ever made. After listening to it almost daily for five years and still being able to enjoy it just as much every single time - I know.
people say Christopher McCandless' was doing the wrong thing, that going out into the wild would have been way too dangerous.
I think he just did the right thing. He had a dream and was not afraid of living it. And even though he didnt survive, he died happily, for what many people can not say from themselves!

Ten years ago I never would have considered doing anything like this...however society has become so sick, shallow, and decayed abandoning it entirely is starting to look more and more like a reasonable option. I can really understand why Chris did what he did.
@oneleggedspider That is what I am now working towards. I have no debt, I have no house, I have no car. I just need to find where to live in harmony with nature and then I'm gone. I'm leaving this sick society and everything it stands for. Maybe I'll end up in Alaska, I don't know. As George Carlin said it best "Do everything you can to find ways of divorcing yourself from society".
@questionsleadtotruth Amen to that brother. Don't let anyone tell you you're crazy-you're not. Far from it. It just takes a little courage to step over that line.
I'm off to New Mexico myself. I scored a nice little job as a resident attendant at a campground in the Sante Cristo mountains near Los Alamos. Very little money, but I get a little cabin and it's deserted for half the year and very rugged. Indian country. So I am so out of here. Good luck bro..you'll find your way.
Old story line. Guy hates his life, guy turns his back on civilation. Jerimiah Johnson with new music. You do not have to go into the wild to find yourself. That is just a Hollywood hype.
@TheGreatgru think you've missed the message mate. He didn't hate his life. He just didn't like the way soceity is today and how every thinks the same way!
Different people find themselves in different ways and in different places. Christopher's way and place happened to be in the wild, without money and living off of whatever he could gather. McCandless's story is not a "Hollywood hype," it's a real life story. Yes, it might be dramatized, but it can't be too far off of what McCandless actually did, given that he left a diary and a lot of evidence of his trips. That's how I see it.
@TheGreatgru I think people go their entire lives in our society never finding out who they are. That is the saddest tragedy of a human life. To never find the magic within yourself. I think nature helps people discover that magic because it reminds us that we are connected to nature in ways we still have yet to discover. Just because we possess intelligence does not mean we are superior to nature.
It's weird, I've done this in life. Explored to find myself, "got caught up in a military revolution, climbed a mountain without ropes, swam with sharks". Sounds crazy, but I'm lucky to learn to find myself, is simply to love without ego. Peace and hope.
I know that a lot of kids my age say they don't like their generation and like music that is steriotypically too old for them to like. But I can't stand the generation I'm in, the music sucks, the people are plastic and over emotional. I really do wish I was born in 1977 so I could still got out while there were still blank spots on the maps but it's too late for that...
A lacking wind would soon decline the Alpha average case of rite. We've felt the sharp rocks of the current, tasted berries of bitterly rawness, of a choice declared and death resigns of the wilderness, great and resilent design, and if this were the tramp's Lifeway, encouraging the defiant pledge of running wild, flying free, but neither life nor death decree of the wilderness, we've sprung from here and whether we live eternally, Here, we had led our lives, naturally free .
I showed this movie to my family last Xmas Eve, they thought it was stupid and they hated it. Im never showing them another movie. Considering my Dad has watched Pirates 100 times, that might be a good idea.
Criticizers can never understand his undying desire of Self exploration, I mean what guy would give $24000 to a charity and then would burn rest of his money just to go on a Trek!
His Journey was his Pilgrimage, his Death was an accident and they way he died, I think he achieved his Salvation!!!
well, this music is so great as the movie is so thank you alot for posting this music here otherwise its prery hard to find it. this music and movie changes the way that ppl look at life... eddie was the perfect guy to sing it his voice fit just right with it. chris wanted to find freedoom his entire life he actualy did, not the way he espected to but he was happy where he was and probably happy where he is now
Chris didnt loose his life he found it and lived it to the fullest. He had more adventure and freedom then most people can cram into a lifetime. He is a true hero of mine.
this song reminds me of the love of my life. mike... i miss you everyday and my love for you has never stopped. i wasn't sure how long love could last until i met you. you're always in my heart.
The song is called "Big Hard Sun" and a local band called Indio released it on their 1989 LP Big Harvest. Indio isn't really a "them" but a guy named Gordon Peterson who hasn't been heard from since. If you were listening to Toronto radio in the late 80s and early 90s, you'll recognize this tune.
Eddie does a nice job with it. Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker fills in for Joni Mitchell on this version. Listen to Ed Vedder's "Big Hard Sun" below.
Bad news guys, this song was written by a little know Canadian writer...over 20 yrs ago...it's true, look it up. But it did take Mr Vedder to make it famous and awesome...rock on! I love this kids story, except the ending of course. LPK
society pens up our souls, that why we go in search of our true selves. to see what we were taught and what matters when it counts! so raise your children to know thy ways!!
@10yan01 I read somewhere how important it is in life, not necessarily to be strong, but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once, to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions. That's the way it is here.
Chris, lived more in his brief time that he was with us than most people even dream of their entire life. I think that it was because he actually reached out & grabbed life & found out what it meant to truly be FREE!!
Fly high Brother & someday soon we can soar together!!
My heart sings for the story of this beautiful life, and celebrates Supertramp, and all the poet-warriors of the world....... bless you all..... a loving tear for you all.
This man started my journey to freedom.... I always think about how I would still be stuck in the quagmire that is bullshit society if it weren't for him..

What will people think of what you've done this time?
Go with the crowd, surely somebody knows
Why we're all wearing the emperor's clothes.
Play it safe, play by the rules
Or don't play at all - what if you lose?
That's not the secret, but I know what is:

Above sky, the blue rolls,
with the leaning style of greens,
rest in the gentleness
of rushing winds and rains
and the bus runs late
from two to nine,

I showed this movie to my family last Xmas Eve, they thought it was stupid and they hated it. Im never showing them another movie. Considering my Dad has watched Pirates 100 times, that might be a good idea.

Criticizers can never understand his undying desire of Self exploration, I mean what guy would give $24000 to a charity and then would burn rest of his money just to go on a Trek!
His Journey was his Pilgrimage, his Death was an accident and they way he died, I think he achieved his Salvation!!!

@pokeysaurus1 Yeah I don't remember them but My dad youst to like them !

Bad news guys, this song was written by a little know Canadian writer...over 20 yrs ago...it's true, look it up. But it did take Mr Vedder to make it famous and awesome...rock on! I love this kids story, except the ending of course. LPK

People critisize, but How he did what he did isn't nearly as important as WHY.

10yan01 8 months ago
@10yan01 I read somewhere how important it is in life, not necessarily to be strong, but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once, to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions. That's the way it is here.

Chris, lived more in his brief time that he was with us than most people even dream of their entire life. I think that it was because he actually reached out & grabbed life & found out what it meant to truly be FREE!!

Am I the only one who thinks McCandless was an idiot? The guy took no itiative to prepare himself for the wild -- he had a deathwish.
Richard Proenneke was a real survivor -- he lived in the alaskan wilderness for 30 years. McCandless was a kid with a death wish
