  • This man started my journey to freedom.... I always think about how I would still be stuck in the quagmire that is bullshit society if it weren't for him..

  • sadly you dont know how good something is until it's gone. sadly that's the way it was for chris. he will never know how MUCH of an inspiration he was to both me and the millions of other people that have had the pleasure of hearing about his life. He doesn't just motivate me. he inspires me to think the same. because honestly what he made me realize is at the end of your life, are you TRULY happy with what you've done? i know he was. long live chris mccandless

  • to find myself at least once in the most ancient of conditions... no thank you... our ancestors did that for us and worked and sacrificed so that future generations wouldnt have to live like this... i'll take my loving family and day and modern day conveniences... but if i attempted this, i would not be so ill prepared because dont think for one moment as he was dying he regretted ever doing this...

  • @117842 If future generations forget what we must do to survive in these times what will we do when the world of electricity fails us?

  • I've been traveling since I finished high school; 4 years on the road, but roaming isn't enough; the true journey doesn't consist in seeing new landscapes but in having new eyes. Be yourself, be free.

  • @Livetoroam really? I want to do the same where are you now?

  • Hoping to do such an adventure/travel in my life

  • there are a lot of poets commenting... god!

  • 1:24 awesome!

  • POSITIVE ENERGY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Its nice to see a you tube video with few negitive comments and a truck load of inspirational thoughts, Vedder must have done something right hear

  • i wish for everyone to find their calling and for everyone understand that family i worth the world, no matter what. me and my brother hated eachother while he lived here and now hes moved out and i talk to him as much as i can and every time we hang up, its like he's just died. but then i realize that hes always going to be my brother, dead or alive. and now i have true experiences that not alot of adults have even had the oppertunity to do. ive been camping in 'true' wilderness. and im happy.

  • After reading this amazing book I insisted on watching it. Chris McCandless or Alex Supertramp (whichever is preferred, I don't really know) is an amazing man with a philosophy of real education, adventure, and most importantly: life. Although I never met this man, he inspired me. Many people I have talked to an met say that there were some screws missing in his head, or he was just insane. I disagree. Emile (who is probably one of the greatest actors) did an amazing job with playing him!

  • this movie made me feel <3 I wanna do this someday..awesome soundtrack, story, everything

  • Inspirational song to an inspirational movie

  • Beyond amazing movie and amazing song.

  • The fact that we comment on this video suggests we aren't living.

  • this movie all most made me cry good story

  • This story is pretty incredible. I see so many people each day living their mundane-, 401k-, unionized-, PTO-, Medicare-filled lives only to find the day of retirement to be nothing particular at all. They die never really having LIVED!

  • feel strong....

    :)

  • 1:25 is the most beautiful part of the movie...family and love.

  • i wish i had seen one thing in my life as beatiful as he saw everything...

  • Cool name! Alex Supertramp!!!

  • this is a great movie, but questioning Chris´s McCandles decisions, it was pretty selfish, not thinkinh in his parents, his"girlfriend", all the people he met along the way, im not saying it was wrong, but he died alone, i`m thinking he could live being happy with the people that cares about him.. that form makes is 10 times more sad Oo... all the people that met him got a emotional dependance, that`s selfish to me. :(

  • If you want something in life, reach out and grab it.

  • Follow the leader, stay in the lines.

What will people think of what you've done this time?

Go with the crowd, surely somebody knows

Why we're all wearing the emperor's clothes.

Play it safe, play by the rules

Or don't play at all - what if you lose?

That's not the secret, but I know what is:

Everybody dies but not everyone lives.

  • "There's a biiiiiiiiig, a big hard suuun..."

    Ahh. Love it.

  • Alaska, Alaska or city Alaska they have markets in Alaska. The city of Alaska. Not in Alaska. In the city of Alaska, they have markets.

  • the only truth in this world is what you believe in most

  • Amazing movie and soundtrack

  • It's important in life to not necessarily to be strong, but to feel strong...to measure youself at least once, to find yourself at least once in one of the most ancient conditions...

  • @Lamzicles I agree.. However.. I have tested myself multiple of times and I still cant say what makes me a man..

  • AMAZING MOVIE - AWESOME SONG !

  • one of my favorite movies. its message is timeless and everybody can relate.

  • I am looking faword to living like this!

  • 4:45 id pay a million bucks for that feeling on my face.

  • @rahul25nair This is one step more than Happiness my friend...TRUE FREEDOM

  • @sidespin11 He yells " is there anybody here!!"

  • Eddie Vedder !!! Super this music ....I Love It ...The Movie What can I say.... only It is Super .....and real....I love it when a person takes life like it this ....Yes I try it to if I had the chance.....and I have .......Love to all in the world....

  • It's amazing .....

  • Some people feel like they don't deserve love. They walk away quietly into empty spaces, trying to close the gaps of the past.

  • There’s a big

    a big hard sun

    beating on the big people

    in the big hard world

  • i love this song!

  • life goes by in a quick flash. it boggles me how so many flock to the corporate, routine lifestyle of apathy, sleepwalking to their grave.

i weep for those who don't know the true satisfaction and blessedness of following ones dreams, whatever that may be i encourage us ALL to face our fears and live our dreams. :)

  • @todonnell777 also, please check out my youtube page;

its sole purpose is to spread Mccandless-like hope to all.

  • well you cant fuck all of socitey, he find later in his adventure that it is best shared with a companion

  • @todonnell777 Sensational comment. Summed up how we all have to live life, to face our fears .. and satisfy our needs and see the world, people and stories to tell.

  • when i wolk i am a better man because my spirit is refreshed and strog for the travel

  • I just figured out how to play this song on my banjo. Since this song characterized my first trip to the states in 2008, I get that sweet kick of happiness, and the feeling of having the whole world as your playground whenever I'm playing it or listening to it. It is probably one of the best songs ever made. After listening to it almost daily for five years and still being able to enjoy it just as much every single time - I know.

  • great song for a great movie, if u havent watched it yet, go for it, u will not regret and you will thank me later for this

  • Sean Penn is cool

  • You have to pay a fine just to go through the rapids? Fucking stupid. It's like having to pay to have a walk in some wild forest.

  • A great song to compliment a great movie ..... Thanks Eddie & Sean

  • hope my neighboor likes this song!

  • I think this kid was trying to live his dream and thats all. Everyone is trying to be happy and this is how he found peace within himself. He lived his dream and died finding it. Lets not forget he died lonely and scared. I feel sorry for people that can't find happiness within scociety, because lets face it folks it will always be here. I'm not saying scociety is at it's top game, but I do think it's up to us to shape it and mold it into a better system.

  • If you want something in life, REACH OUT AND GRAB IT.

  • he tried, did he fail? maybe that depends who you ask.

  • Can I get a thumbs up just to say kiss my ass to society!!

  • @poster6322 you deserve an ass kiss for this!!!...:)

  • @poster6322 By asking for "thumbs up" you are embracing society. Asking others for that is social.

  • @SuperDriedFruit Deep man, deep. You are a bright human but I stand firm. THUMBS UP MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @poster6322 FUCK YEAH!!!

  • Nice music sad comments :)

  • awesome song.

  • Freedom happens in your head

  • awesome cd

  • Ten years ago I never would have considered doing anything like this...however society has become so sick, shallow, and decayed abandoning it entirely is starting to look more and more like a reasonable option. I can really understand why Chris did what he did.

  • @oneleggedspider That is what I am now working towards. I have no debt, I have no house, I have no car. I just need to find where to live in harmony with nature and then I'm gone. I'm leaving this sick society and everything it stands for. Maybe I'll end up in Alaska, I don't know. As George Carlin said it best "Do everything you can to find ways of divorcing yourself from society".

  • @questionsleadtotruth Amen to that brother. Don't let anyone tell you you're crazy-you're not. Far from it. It just takes a little courage to step over that line.

I'm off to New Mexico myself. I scored a nice little job as a resident attendant at a campground in the Sante Cristo mountains near Los Alamos. Very little money, but I get a little cabin and it's deserted for half the year and very rugged. Indian country. So I am so out of here. Good luck bro..you'll find your way.

  • @oneleggedspider

    GOOD LUCK

  • Old story line. Guy hates his life, guy turns his back on civilation. Jerimiah Johnson with new music. You do not have to go into the wild to find yourself. That is just a Hollywood hype.

  • @TheGreatgru think you've missed the message mate. He didn't hate his life. He just didn't like the way soceity is today and how every thinks the same way!

  • @TheGreatgru

Different people find themselves in different ways and in different places. Christopher's way and place happened to be in the wild, without money and living off of whatever he could gather. McCandless's story is not a "Hollywood hype," it's a real life story. Yes, it might be dramatized, but it can't be too far off of what McCandless actually did, given that he left a diary and a lot of evidence of his trips. That's how I see it.

  • @TheGreatgru I think people go their entire lives in our society never finding out who they are. That is the saddest tragedy of a human life. To never find the magic within yourself. I think nature helps people discover that magic because it reminds us that we are connected to nature in ways we still have yet to discover. Just because we possess intelligence does not mean we are superior to nature.

  • It's weird, I've done this in life. Explored to find myself, "got caught up in a military revolution, climbed a mountain without ropes, swam with sharks". Sounds crazy, but I'm lucky to learn to find myself, is simply to love without ego. Peace and hope.

  • @corymf Oh my go, I love your comment.

  • I know that a lot of kids my age say they don't like their generation and like music that is steriotypically too old for them to like. But I can't stand the generation I'm in, the music sucks, the people are plastic and over emotional. I really do wish I was born in 1977 so I could still got out while there were still blank spots on the maps but it's too late for that...

  • @AnonymousSarcasm its never to late

  • A lacking wind would soon decline the Alpha average case of rite. We've felt the sharp rocks of the current, tasted berries of bitterly rawness, of a choice declared and death resigns of the wilderness, great and resilent design, and if this were the tramp's Lifeway, encouraging the defiant pledge of running wild, flying free, but neither life nor death decree of the wilderness, we've sprung from here and whether we live eternally, Here, we had led our lives, naturally free .

  • Above sky, the blue rolls,

with the leaning style of greens,

    rest in the gentleness

    of rushing winds and rains

    and the bus runs late

    from two to nine,

    the only times

    for relaxing wilds

proving the natural nature of angelic smiles

    .

  • I showed this movie to my family last Xmas Eve, they thought it was stupid and they hated it. Im never showing them another movie. Considering my Dad has watched Pirates 100 times, that might be a good idea.

  • This song fucking rocks ! Makes me want to go to Alaska and camp out .

  • .

    nice song... nice performance..

    I like this

    .

  • this movie makes me want to buy: old hiking bags, high hiking shoes, and others hiking equipment..

  • Criticizers can never understand his undying desire of Self exploration, I mean what guy would give $24000 to a charity and then would burn rest of his money just to go on a Trek!

His Journey was his Pilgrimage, his Death was an accident and they way he died, I think he achieved his Salvation!!!

  • well, this music is so great as the movie is so thank you alot for posting this music here otherwise its prery hard to find it. this music and movie changes the way that ppl look at life... eddie was the perfect guy to sing it his voice fit just right with it. chris wanted to find freedoom his entire life he actualy did, not the way he espected to but he was happy where he was and probably happy where he is now

  • I have nothing but envy for this young man. Stop your belief in a false god.

  • Fuck!... thats a good song

  • Chris didnt loose his life he found it and lived it to the fullest. He had more adventure and freedom then most people can cram into a lifetime. He is a true hero of mine.

  • Loved the soundtrack. Hated, hated, hated the movie.

  • @BassPlayerSusan the movie was awsome

  • @BassPlayerSusan what did you hate about it??

  • @BassPlayerSusan just stop talking.

  • he sounds like owen wilson at 3:34

  • The song is called "Big Hard Sun" and a local band called Indio released it on their 1989 LP Big Harvest. Indio isn't really a "them" but a guy named Gordon Peterson who hasn't been heard from since. If you were listening to Toronto radio in the late 80s and early 90s, you'll recognize this tune.

Eddie does a nice job with it. Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker fills in for Joni Mitchell on this version. Listen to Ed Vedder's "Big Hard Sun" below.

  • @pokeysaurus1 Yeah I don't remember them but My dad youst to like them !

  • Bad news guys, this song was written by a little know Canadian writer...over 20 yrs ago...it's true, look it up. But it did take Mr Vedder to make it famous and awesome...rock on! I love this kids story, except the ending of course. LPK

  • We are not all in the same situation as chris, but we can still leave the world without physically escaping from its grasp.

  • Chris McCandless is my hero.

  • People critisize, but How he did what he did isn't nearly as important as WHY.

  • society pens up our souls, that why we go in search of our true selves. to see what we were taught and what matters when it counts! so raise your children to know thy ways!!

  • Into the wild is a movie that made me to travel into the wild inside of me.

  • Makes u look @ ur life and think...... Should I have turned right instead left?

  • Emile Hirsch and Dicaprio have the exact same voice!

  • ...just have the Bravery to do it.....Mother Nature's Sweet and Cruel at the same Time...

  • I have my date set in place, to escape... to get free... to truly live!!!

    One day.. Thank you Chris

  • PLEASe - 02,10 - 02,30 _ what is he saying? I dont understand. Thx

  • @10yan01 I read somewhere how important it is in life, not necessarily to be strong, but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once, to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions. That's the way it is here.

  • @Olamtir Thanks man!

  • 50 exibiçoes saum minhas =D

  • amazing film! its made me go to scotland this year to camp wild for a bit and live of the land,

  • Emile Hirsch is a great actor. When he sees the deer running by and his eyes well up.I'ts such a magical moment it sends chills down my spine.

  • I cried in a good way.

  • My heart sings for the story of this beautiful life, and celebrates Supertramp, and all the poet-warriors of the world....... bless you all..... a loving tear for you all.

  • Robert Pattinson made 31 accounts to dislike this

  • Eddie Vedder, your voice is magical...

  • Seriously, 31 people are deaf who have disliked this beautiful song.

  • Great movie and soundtrack..

  • powerful ... it wrote of my passion & i cant write

  • Was that Kristen Stewart? I almost didn't recognize her with a smile on her face!

  • Am I the only one who thinks McCandless was an idiot? The guy took no itiative to prepare himself for the wild -- he had a deathwish.

Richard Proenneke was a real survivor -- he lived in the alaskan wilderness for 30 years. McCandless was a kid with a death wish
