  • im sorry they need to stop being debbie downers...this movie kicks ass

  • Oh my God, fucking Rhinos! Fucking quicksands! They're gonna eat us all!

  • possibley their worst review.

  • Can’t stand these stuck-up snooty asses. They’re the reason I don’t trust reviewers… nor do I look to them to decide whether I’m going to see a movie or not.

  • what a couple of pussies! i saw this at 7yrs old when it first came out, and i had a blast, this movie isn't scary it's fun.

  • Frightened me then. Makes me facepalm now.

  • Are they kidding? I've loved this since I was six. (Watched it with my mum every other weekend we could - the spiders were scary - but it was totally worth it!) It's a good film for everyone because it's all about facing your fears, no matter how wild or dangerous, and when you're little, you have a lot :)

And I'm sure I wasn't the only kid FURIOUSLY DISAPPOINTED when the game came out in stores: cardboard, lacking monkeys, and COMPLETELY unpossessed by evil jungle spirits D8< haha.

  • I will agree that this movie was too dark, but what nobody brought up that really bothers me is that JUDY DIES! I mean, a young innocent girl dies...IN A PG RATED MOVIE?!? That's really not going to cause psychological damage??? I know she comes back later in the film, but a death is still a death!

  • I agree with those who say ugly Ebert is being punished with a slow death before being sent to hell

  • Are they saying this is bad- wow, this is very very far from it this has to be one of my favourite movies of all time

  • They make great points, but man, if Siskel and Ebert only knew how much worse the CGI>story trend became...I don't think they'd be as harsh to Jumanji.

  • @halflinks and yet you go on youtube, and take time out of your day to writ a comment about it. If I think something sucks I stay away from it

  • Friends don't let rubberjaws flap!

  • @fuck192ass now to this comment I agree, because the review was based on the idea of how Jumanji could have been better than what it was and still is.

You people need to wake up to reality and see things for what they are, the idea of the movie was great but that doesn't make the acting or the story better in this movie.

This sends me back to what Gene said in this review, "Jumanji is an Ambitious myth". It was ambitious enough, but it didn't have enough substance to become a timeless classic.

  • It was a good movie then and it's a good movie now.

  • Ebert is deformed and tasteless

  • The game's instructions were self-explanatory enough. That dumb bitch caused Robin Williams decades of suffering, when all she had to do was keep rolling until she hit 5 or 8. Weak.

  • WILL YOU GUYS PLEASE GET OVER THE F**KING SPECIAL EFFECTS!!?

  • Completely agree..

  • ebert is a monster

  • I have a soft spot for Jumanji. I remember getting the video for Christmas. I agree that it is part of the "Robin Williams tries to save the world with his heart" series (Jack, Hook, PATCH F@*#ING ADAMS) but this is one that I love.

  • @sinfulcomplexity I hate it too this movie sucks so much so dumb and boring!!!! i hate i absoluetly agree with u hate this movie!

  • Sure it was kinda scary at times, but as a kid I loved it!

  • oh my god is ebert horrible

  • This is one of the best family films ever.

  • Check my comments in my channel for information about the Pre-January 8th version of Inception.

  • @mechagodzilla290 that's immature

  • @jamestargetedindiv indeed, so is spam

  • I was 5 when this movie came out and I really liked it then and was not scared but now I agree with them.

  • I don't think they're giving younger kids enough credit.

  • I have always loved this movie and it never scared me I thought it was cool to see the animals and special effects cause my little kid mind thought that somehow they were real ya there were scenes where it dragged slightly but over all it was a great film for its target audience which is kids - teenagers and as long as you knew it was a movie I don't think there was anything especially 'scary' about it

  • FUCK ROGER EBERT

  • Ugly Ebert and her tired fans are "Ju-trash-i"

  • you can't blame gene for his criticism of these effect-laden flicks. he's rooted in cinematic conservatism... he's an old-school casablanca classicist. plus it wouldn't be an interesting review without hearing alternate sides to the film you never think about. i loved this film when i was a kid, still do.

  • My childhood, oh how I miss it.

  • This movie made me so scared as a kid, but now I appreciate it.

  • Did they just completely ignore the story? Alan learned that his father truly loved him, this movie is an underrated classic. Only these two would dislike this, they dissed this, Fallen and Tremors.

  • I enjoy this movie now, but somehow Ebert was right; I was terrified of this as a kid.

  • we miss gene's reviews, even though he used to be very sharp with horror movies. I don't know who we we re gonna listen when ebert passes away

  • But Jumanji does have an interesting story at the heart of it, in the shape of Van Pelt being a metaphor for Simon having to confront his father. Also, it takes a bit more than some loud animals to scare kids - it's when adventure starts to bleed over into the horror genre, as per the Harry Potter anthology, that children have to proceed with extra caution. There's really none of that here. Jungle antics are the stuff of children's stories.

  • I disagree. Jumanji is one of my favorite movies. It had flaws, but I still found it enjoyable. Plus it's one of my favorite Robin Williams films. I think he does drama better then comedy in movies.

  • im disappointed that they didnt like this movie. this, little rascals, and space jam were my childhood.

  • Hey, the T-rex from Jurassic Park scared the crap out of me as a kid and I still loved it! That's all the more reason to see these movies as a kid; because once you get a certain age, those scares don't work on you anymore.

Besides, I think Jumanji is much more interesting (beyond the fx) than people give it credit for. I love the idea that the game can alter time so radically. The character Van Pelt, too, I don't think it was a coincidence they used the same actor who played the boy's father.

  • Its been forever since I seen this movie.

  • Idk, I will always love this movie.

  • I saw mary jane.

  • honestly when i saw this movie at the age of four i thought it was shit

  • Gene is right, the whole movie is just about special effects.

  • I normally respect their opinions, but I really disagree with Siskel and Ebert in this one. I thought it was a good adventure and this movie didn't scare me as a kid.

  • I thought Jumanji was supposed to be a promotion for children to play board games.

  • Jumanji was a lot of fun---i disagree with Siskel and Ebert here.

  • I will say this for Joe Johnston...He knows how to make popcorn flicks...His movies are not of the highest quality but they are, at the very least, entertaining.

  • This guy is taken things outta Context....This is a horrible review DO NOT LISTEN to him!

-In the end the little boy learns not to cheat an over comes his fear.

-Robin williams character which is the main character over comes his fear in the end as well (He stands up to the hunter!)

I could go on and on about how good this movie is and how it could be scary but REALLY come on there are way scareer movies out there

    YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!

  • I agree with Ebert, those plants scared the crap out of me when I was a kid, I used to have nightmares of those poison-shooter flower things coming out of the floor!

  • The only scary part was the kid being sucked into the game at the beginning. Other then that, it ain't scary it all.

  • i hated jumanji. it was sooooo boring.

  • Man, I havnt seen a boring board game movie since Zathura

  • God i hated this movie when i was a kid.

  • Jumanji was a great movie, but really scary when I was little.

  • Thumbs down for Siskel & Ebert on this review. Jumanji was a great film.

  • ebert mentions everything except the spiders and they were by far the most frightening thing in the film. I like Jumanji most likely because of my fond memories of watching it as a kid but honestly If I saw it today I would probably feel differently.

  • wtf scary it never scared me or any child i knew of it was a perfect childhood film with enough scary moments to keep the intensity of the story these guys are reviewing this in the completely wrong way

  • This movie never scared me as a kid, in fact it was one of my favorites, and I still love it to this day. That's what I hate about Ebert and critics in general, they think they know everything and can speak for everyone, not to mention Siskel and Ebert were always biased toward certain genres and types of films.

  • @campkillyourself93

"That's what I hate about Ebert and critics in general, they think they know everything and can speak for everyone".

They're not speaking for anyone but themselves, they're movie critics, that's what they get paid to do. Just because either of them said something about a movie doesn't mean it's fact, just means that's how they felt about it. I love this movie, it's fun to sit and watch with my kids, critics are entitled to their opinion of it though.

  • I hold Siskel in very high regard but I'm surprised he was so harsh on this one. I've absolutely adored Jumanji as a 13 year old.. unlike the greats, it certainly loses much of its power if you watch it later as a grown up, but it's far from "a mess" and definitely underrated.

  • I loved the bonny hunt character and the police officer, but after seeing Jurassic Park the animals looked colorless and fake.

  • Whose afraid of quicksand anymore?

  • I was about 4 or 5 when i watched this and found if f**king terrifying, i like the film now. But back then i didnt get all the talking parts, of which there are quite alot, and the same for the things coming out of the board game.

I remember getting it as i moved house, i chose Toy Story, and my brother chose Jumanji, i must have watched Toy Story at least 10 times.

  • This was a great movie, loved it and watched it over and over!

  • Be fair, it's a kid's movie. You need to get your head examined, Gene. And you need to keep your mouth shut, Roger.

  • I think this film is very underreated

  • when i was a kid i was never frightened by the things there call scary, i think adults think of children as being to easily frightened by this stuff, as a child i was really only frightened by the beasts in alien and slightly by bruce from jaws, to me the animals and other crazy stunts did not frighten me even at the age of six.

  • @johnd94 Thank you. That comment was both stupid AND racist.

  • In a world of 3D, sugarcoated effects, and eyecandy, Siskel and Ebert say it best: "Because you can do special effects, that doesn't mean you have to do them off the wall." "They have to be at the SERVICE of the story."

  • When I see the scene where Judy and Peter find Jumanji in the attic, I personally think of the influence Superbook had on this movie, where in the first SB ep, Chris and Joy find Superbook in the attic.

    Anybody else notice the influence?

  • I think this was my first robin williams movie.

  • I agree with S & E the movie was rather crappy and boring.

  • Surprised Siskel and Ebert hated this movie? I mean it's worlds beyond some of the crap that passes as kids movies today imo.

  • it looks like siskel hadn't slept in a week

  • i even baught the board game, lol. what a waste!

  • Well, that wasn't much of a review, wasn't it?

  • the never give kids enuff credit. so what if it scares them a little bit im sure they r seaing it with there parents and i think kids like getting scarred more than they lead u 2 beleave

  • yeah man every kid liked this movie

  • I hated kid movies when I was a kid and you know what? Looking back, I was right like 90% of the time. Movies like this is why kids are stupid. Gene's opening comment nailed it. Not even watching the rest of the video.

  • 1:19 FUCK I LOST!

  • What the hell was their problem?

  • Rough critism Gene .. I was 10 when I saw it And I loved it then...

  • @aghabmoonde 6!

  • I heard Jumanji is a true story.

  • Did Siskel and Ebert give "Jumanji" two thumbs down?

  • These guys suck. They don't get anything. Aren't these guys supposed to be respected critics. Clueless.

  • @sparkyinbath They are, maybe you should watch a few more of their reviews to get the point

  • @moviehypno23 I've seen loads. They often get things wrong.

  • @sparkyinbath Well the only time they got it really wrong was when Siskel didn't like Aliens or Silence of the Lambs, and when Ebert didn't really like South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, at least so far as I've seen

  • That movie used to scare the shot outta me when I was little!

  • I love this film.

  • man these guys are pansies,i thought they were weak saying aliens was to extreme but to say this is scary is lol-erific

  • @YoJimBoHugabaJoe Not all of us like horror films, some of us get creeped out easier than say, someone who enjoys the goriest of horror films so yeah, to some people it would be.

Must admit it never scared me personally, but I'm trying to show a bit of empathy here, no offence.

  • Considering this was by the guy who directed from Honey, I Shrunk The Kids and The Rocketeer, I was shocked how flat this movie was.

  • There's no tigers in this film

  • I agree loved it as a kid wasn't scary at all

  • I'm suprised. I loved this sooooooo much when as I kid. I was ten when it came out.

  • I can see how this would scare some kids since its full of constant dangers.

I was watching Friday the 13th movies when I was 5-6 years old, so I guess I can't relate, lol.

  • @takerdust lol same here, only films to scare me were IT and for some reason roger rabbit and superman 3.Dad used to laugh that horror films didnt bother me yet i was terrified of the villain in roger rabbit when he gets flattened and his eyes pop out

  • I swear these guys don't know how to enjoy a 'popcorn flick'

  • How was this scary? I remember laughing and liking it when i was like 5 years old or 6 years old.

  • Siskel ♥ Ebert

  • how would it be scary its just animals god

  • I like this movie but it scared me when I was young.

  • i personally loved this movie as a kid it scared me but it was nothing i couldn't handle i loved the scariness of it to me its a classic movie

  • "FRIGHTEN"??? man, this movie didn't scare me one bit

  • Someone force Roger Ebert to choose either this film or Spider-Man 1. He gave thumbs down to both films and they are mirrored version of themselves. Spider-Man had a story better than it's effects and Jumanji had better effects than it's story.

    Like both films.

  • i loved that film as a kid

    not sure how its scary....

  • This was one of my favorite movies growing up, and not a single tiger appears in this movie. p.s. Roger Ebert is a fat disfigured cancerous cunt with a fat ugly nigger for a wife. I want to elect my VHS copy of Jumanji for President of the United States of America.

  • @johnd94 lol u mad?

  • 1:25 "Okay.... so what" hahaha I liked the Siskel said "Okay..." like whatever... haha I agreed with Siskel more than Ebert and he was the better critic, so his name came first (Siskel & Ebert) even though E comes before S in the alphabet.

I saw this as a kid on Laserdisc and I really didn't find it interesting either! This was a horrible film - it makes Michael Bay look like he uses CG well with story!

  • @boamuro remember, this was 1995

  • @schmittyc1993 What's your point? I said I wasn't impressed even at the time watching it on Laserdisc as a kid.

  • Comment removed

  • Ebert constantly underestimates children. It's often movies that do have some threatening aspect that make the deepest and fondest impressions. Still, the movies Ebert seems to identify as too scary are rarely ones I can remember finding particularly frightening as a child.

  • is that Kirsten Dunst?!?!

  • @stigbohnolsen thanks.....weird

  • @spicychicken93 It is yes.

  • I personally like Jumanji, but I still think that they make a few good points.

  • this movie is great and shows how critics don't know shit!!! any little kid scared by this movie is a little bitch...its a freaking Robin williams movie with kids in it...its not even a horror movie...totally ridiculous....omg jungle animals and quicksand im scared

  • this is nothing! you should read ebert's written review of the movie, get this, he said that kids will be rolling around in the beds with nightmares and the movie should be rated PG-13! and he recommends jurassic park and gremlins to kids? can you do the math, it can't

  • oh no! i'm a pussyass kid! please protect me from the scary cgi animals, siskel and ebert! seriously, i was a kid when i saw this film, and it DID scare me, and i LOVED it for that. now that i'm older, i can see it has plenty of flaws, but being scary is certainly not one of them. i'm surprised to see such a flimsy, reactionary response from these two.

  • Jumanji is awesome

  • give me a break scares little kids? So thats like a reason to hate a movie? Some people go to movies to be scared and this one is tame compared to a lot of shit these days.

  • little kids would be very scared, but not 12 year olds. i know this cos I was one. it was freaky, but extremely intriguing. and kirsten was hot! the effects, for a kids movie, were amazing! Sadly these two old men wouldn't see it like that :(

  • @m0ds suck a dick

  • I gotta say, I like this movie, still think it's ok

  • Jumanji was okay. Besides i've had worse movies scare the $%^@ out of me.

  • robin didnt even try being funny in this movie... it would have been better if they let williams improv the whole thing... that may annoy many viewers

  • Me neither. I can't believe I was forced to watch this in Grade 4 at my elementary school when I used to live in Newfoundland and Labrador (and the movie was partly filmed in Vancouver, I notice). At least it's better than "Batman and Robin". :)

  • This is a crock of shit. I remember seeing a TV spot when this movie was released, and it featured some little kids who liked this movie as I did growing up.

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE A 10

  • I loved this movie! I only clicked on the reviews because I was expecting to hear the same thing from S & E...I was surprised to hear they didn't like it. I loved it and it's one of my all time favorites.

  • I was 5 and it didnt scare me.

  • i loved it

  • As a kid I liked it. And it didn't scare me.

  • I guess they have to take the lowest threshold of fear into account.

  • @andeaver1937 I absolutely agree. Now, if I look at it closely it certainly has problems with it's writing such as the kids problems are solved, for no reason, withon the first 45 minutes, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying this movie. I watched it like 3 months ago after somthing like a 7 year break, and I still enjoyed it greatly. It's simply a very fun movie.

  • I'm glad Siskel got Roger to shut up about the list of scary things, it sounds like Ebert had nightmares after this movie.

  • I loved this movie when I was a kid :D

  • This came out in 1995? Wow, I thought it was much older. I'll have to rewatch this movie to see if my nostalgia of it gets destroyed or if I can just add what I like to my imagination. (I love the idea of a sentient game with an unknown purpose. Creepy but cool.)

  • 2:20 thats how i feel about avatar, twister and every michel bay/uwe boll movie. i would rather watch a good movie like who the fuck framed roger rabbit that did not let the special effects take over the story.

  • I watched it as a young kid and loved it! Fuck the both of them!

  • @olqutseg I agree!!!! I loved this movie as a kid and still love it. I think its great, and I actually have a low tolerance for bad special effects-filled movies.

  • This shit scared me to Hell and back when I was younger, haven't really watched it since then.

  • i liked this movie when i was 9, but i cant stand it now.

  • classic ass movie. Watched it when i was like 9, scared the shit outta me, totally worth it. What's not to like?! Carl the cop is a riot.

  • I loved this movie, it was fun and seriously, scary?! Please!

  • this movie was good

  • @TheProjektcc I liked it when I was younger

  • 2:18

in regards to modern cinema, truer words have never been spoken.

  • I thought it was a good movie. I also thought that the ending of the film when the boy reconciles with his dad stated a good moral lesson for the film!

  • I liked this movie as a kid BECAUSE it was pretty serious.

  • @hanspeterpitsch and Ebert says it would "frighten" younger kids.

I like this as a kid as well

  • Wow, those final words from Siskel about the special effects really need to be said more in this day and age.

  • @Doifebag

Agreed, and Ebert's line about their place *in service* of a story was great as well.

  • It's strange how people think this movie was scary. I was scared pretty easily when I was younger, and this movie was nothing.

  • @NayDeevo31 They're entitled to their opinions. A lot of people love Transformers 2 but that doesn't make it a great film. What are you high?

  • ok.. im high? listen.. if no one at all liked a film its shit isnt it? how popular a film is makes it loved more im talking about what the majority of people think not what you think or whatever

  • @NayDeevo31 Just because their opinions are different than yours, it doesn't mean that they're automatically wrong.

Also, I never liked Jumanji, as a kid and especially as an adult. So I'll have to disagree with you.

  • They've both seen thousands upon thousands of movies in the capacity of being a critic, and were probably the most respected film critics in a long time. They ARE good critics because they give their opinions truthfully and coherently. Just because you LIKED a movie they don't, doesn't mean they're instantly "bad critics"

  • @theJugganawt ok then but see the thing is i can disasgree and state my opinion...right? which was they're bad ok i guess i misunderstood what bieng a critic is its just going on TV and saying whether YOU specifically liked a film or not.. which i wouldnt really call a job... just getting lucky.. and a good personality would help...

  • no good purpo
