NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors. After an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within three years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty. i also had the same problem, it's happening when the temperature s around 60-70°c
now i must run a fan controller software to prevent this issue . it's smcFanControl. i can set the fan speed manualy. they run at 6000rpm and the temperature is around 48°
I also have this problem and have been unable to resolve it yet. After zapping the PRAM (holding option+P+R at startup, waiting for chimes, repeat 3x) and starting in single-user mode (command+s at startup) and running a file system check (type "fsck -y"), I was still unable to achieve a successful startup. I did notice that the laptop had been running very hot recently -- especially the GPU.
PS! I fixed this problem once by reinstalling ALL OS X but after a week it kept on crashing after it heated at 60-70˙c. and now it wont start up again. I'll let u know if I fix it but let us know if u do please :)

The problem occured on the first start of my book.
Overheating is unlikely in my case.

UnnamedProphet 3 years ago
Far out! How much will that cost? :s I don't have apple care
donrMedia 2 years ago
They told me it would cost about 1000€ without apple care.
Luckily It was a warranty issue in my case.
UnnamedProphet 2 years ago
Do you have any more details as to what was wrong?
barthatronic 2 years ago
I don't have information about what exactly was wrong.
They just told me they had to change my mainboard.
