I know about her nodules and can't imagine what she goes through. But even if sometimes she's forced to lip sink a bit, or can't really find the right pitch. That doesn't change her. Mariah is one of my favorite singers. Her whistle register is fenomenal and I actually like the airy sound though I know it's because of her nodules. Idk I just hope it ends well. She does her best.

@BlackLightning20101 Personally the performance you are mentioning is my favorite, it sounds natural and it harmonizes nicely with the music (especially the whistles). Imho, a perfect live voice is boring, it's the little imperfections that make live music attractive and real. Of course too much imperfections are bad ;)
i mean we all know she can hit those note but i believe that they're lipped because shes tryin to save her voice and i mean i know its possible to change from a "Normal" singing voice to whistle for her but these are lipped
@MrQuadarius Julie didn't lost her voice because having nodules removed; doctors accidentally cut a lil piece of one of her true folds, thats why she can and wont b able to sing again. if done correctly singers are able to sing the same or even better than before, finding a good surgeon is the problem :)
@umBRITe I agree, even when her voice now is too airy due to her vocal nodules, she is still one of the best vocalists! I still wonder why she doesn't want to get them removed, she would recover her 90's voice again if so. Who cares about whistles? Her belts are what I love more!

But micro larynx surgery has improved a lot, is not like when Juie Andrews lost her singing voice anymore, and she is rich, I mean she can afford the best surgeon on Earth. She should get them removed, rest a year and be ready to kick ass with her voice (and she can always pre record the whistles even if is cheating XD). I don't blame her though, I have vocal nodules too and I still don't know if I will get mine removed :)

But actually she'd be able to belt but her voice would be deeper and she'd lose part of her long vocal range because of what u say about she sings through her nodules. @MrQuadarius The nodule's are not the cause of her being able to sing in the whislte reg. They are the reason why she sounds raspy and husky when she sings in that register or even when belting. Without them yes her range would decrease, but they're not the reason why she has that range. And she doesn't experience when belting, she's one of the best belters out there(on a technical scale). Noduels only make her voice fragile and tire quickly, which is why she never talks before a concert.

@MrQuadarius sigh. One does not SING through their nodules. Nodules are caused because of strenous activity of the voice. Mariah developed them as a child. They are not the cause of her being able to use the WR. she can use that because she PRACTICED and kept speaking in that higher register often. If she got them removed again it will effect her voice, but again she learned to work around them. . She doesn't experience pain when belting, because of her TECHNIQUE. Look at her doctor interview.
@MrButler124 Nodules are the reason she has the an airy singing voice. They cause incomplete closure of the vocal folds, generating a huskier tone when stressed (this is evident in 1997).

@MrQuadarius I disagree(not in a disrespectful way). I think that her voice was probably somewhat AutoTuned. That's all. It's obvious on the riffs in Oh Santa and O Little Town of Bethlehem. I don't think they were so much as "enhanced" though because her raspy, growly voice was still present on the high belting parts like it has been for the past couple of years. So i don't think there were any enhancments besides AutoTune. Plus, who doesn't use AutoTune these days? lol

@banantwon Do you know what auto-tune is used for? It is used to move pitches up and down a semi-tone. You can not auto-tune a riff. And no, auto-tune was not used on her Christmas album.
@rekupp I know what I'm talking about. I've played around with AutoTune before. And if the riffs were not autotuned, then what were they? Because they do not sound possible by any singer to perform live perfectly in tune that fast like in Oh Santa.

I can't stop replaying the 3:36 when she starts that whistle.. and it's weird.. I feel like there are 2 voices at the same time at some point and she didn't put her hand on her ear as usual.. like if she forgot the note was there.. makes me believe the whistles there are playbacks.. and perhaps the really high ones in the end too.. @shado474 mariah does not always put her hand over her ears during a high note..theres some times where she just moves her hand far away when hitting high notes..even tho sometimes she does lip high notes..she has not lost as much of her voice as you think..she still has a 5 octave range, and she still can hit every high note she has ever recorded. her vocal quality has shifted..but when shes well rested she sounds great (check her performing her recent christmas songs)

Her chest voice sounds absolutely amazing at the beginning when she does not try to belt too high, after she lose the control she has over her voice and became scratchy. But her chest voice was in a very great shape here, and very powerful! Impressive. However, the whistles were not live unfortunatly (3:35 obviously she wanted to do her usual chest voice run but forget the lipsync whistle part).

Whitney Houston's LiVe concerts form '85 - '92 makes Mariah Carey sound like average amateur lounge singer. There's a reason Whitney not Mariah was nicknamed the voice. Even Tommy Mottola tried to mould early Mariah into another Whitney - it is why the whole 'White Whitney Houston thing' and the Christian church going girl next door image was groomed to Mariah (which is why Mariah resented it - it wasn't her REAL image.
@taurusg32 and there is a reason why Mariah is the best selling female singer in history and not Whitney.. Admit it, they've both had their best times in terms of vocal quality and they were at a point when they both were able to reach notes higher than any other diva and sing 100 different notes per syllable but now they are BOTH struggling, and you have you admit as well that Mariah's voice is in a far better state than Whitney's right now..
The reason Mariah was ONCE the best selling female singer was because of volume (look at how many albums Mariah kept turning out - she has turned out at least double what Whitney has ever done and Whitney is not that far behind her in sales - so sales per album Whitney wins hands down),

Mariah is one of my favorite singers. Her whistle register is fenomenal and I actually like the airy sound though I know it's because of her nodules. Idk I just hope it ends well. She does her best.

@MrQuadarius Julie didn't lost her voice because having nodules removed; doctors accidentally cut a lil piece of one of her true folds, thats why she can and wont b able to sing again. if done correctly singers are able to sing the same or even better than before, finding a good surgeon is the problem :)

But micro larynx surgery has improved a lot, is not like when Juie Andrews lost her singing voice anymore, and she is rich, I mean she can afford the best surgeon on Earth. She should get them removed, rest a year and be ready to kick ass with her voice (and she can always pre record the whistles even if is cheating XD). I don't blame her though, I have vocal nodules too and I still don't know if I will get mine removed :)

But actually she'd be able to belt but her voice would be deeper and she'd lose part of her long vocal range because of what u say about she sings through her nodules. I guess she should ask her voice doctor what he thinks as a voice expert, u r right a surgery would be as bad now as living with nodules :(

@MrQuadarius The nodule's are not the cause of her being able to sing in the whislte reg. They are the reason why she sounds raspy and husky when she sings in that register or even when belting. Without them yes her range would decrease, but they're not the reason why she has that range. And she doesn't experience when belting, she's one of the best belters out there(on a technical scale). Noduels only make her voice fragile and tire quickly, which is why she never talks before a concert.

@MrQuadarius sigh. One does not SING through their nodules. Nodules are caused because of strenous activity of the voice. Mariah developed them as a child. They are not the cause of her being able to use the WR. she can use that because she PRACTICED and kept speaking in that higher register often. If she got them removed again it will effect her voice, but again she learned to work around them. . She doesn't experience pain when belting, because of her TECHNIQUE. Look at her doctor interview.

@MrQuadarius I disagree(not in a disrespectful way). I think that her voice was probably somewhat AutoTuned. That's all. It's obvious on the riffs in Oh Santa and O Little Town of Bethlehem. I don't think they were so much as "enhanced" though because her raspy, growly voice was still present on the high belting parts like it has been for the past couple of years. So i don't think there were any enhancments besides AutoTune. Plus, who doesn't use AutoTune these days? lol

I can't stop replaying the 3:36 when she starts that whistle.. and it's weird.. I feel like there are 2 voices at the same time at some point and she didn't put her hand on her ear as usual.. like if she forgot the note was there.. makes me believe the whistles there are playbacks.. and perhaps the really high ones in the end too.. @shado474 mariah does not always put her hand over her ears during a high note..theres some times where she just moves her hand far away when hitting high notes..even tho sometimes she does lip high notes..she has not lost as much of her voice as you think..she still has a 5 octave range, and she still can hit every high note she has ever recorded. her vocal quality has shifted..but when shes well rested she sounds great (check her performing her recent christmas songs)

Her chest voice sounds absolutely amazing at the beginning when she does not try to belt too high, after she lose the control she has over her voice and became scratchy. But her chest voice was in a very great shape here, and very powerful! Impressive. However, the whistles were not live unfortunatly (3:35 obviously she wanted to do her usual chest voice run but forget the lipsync whistle part).

Why must people come pair singers ?
Unless they have lived the same lives and have done the same things you can't compare them .
Whitney has been through things that mariah hasn't .
Its not fair to compare someones voice that has had the abuse of drugs versus someone who just is getting older and is still in the business .
You in actuality cannot compare them . i can see if your trying to prove a " point " but its really not proving anything .

@taurusg32 look up "MariahCarey I still believe live 2010" she sounds amazing whitney houston can not sing as well as she use to. Atleast Mariah still has her range, she lost a lil control over her voice, but its clearly still there & btw Mariah is the best selling female artist of all time + 18 number hits the most for any solo artist & she won artist of the millenuim which only her & micheal jackson won & that in itself shut down whitney houstons career any day of the week

Can you believe these ridiculous Whitney Houston fans?? On another video a group of them tried to tag team me. There were making the statement that Whitney can still outsing Mariah anyday...it was so bizarre to me. I mean have they seen any of these recent performances from Mariah? the better question is have they seen any of Whitney's? I understand though, we all hve respect for Ms. Houston.

Everyone is really against Today's Mariah, but I think she's not that bad now... When you listen to her interviews after '96 she keeps on saying that it wasn't the Real Her before her divorce with Mottola because they wanted her to dress not sexy, and they didn't permit her to be herself... Now she's closer to the Real her, maybe a bit exagerated, but at least she's having fun... I may be even wrong, but I think that nobody can judge her cause we don't know her... I LOVE MC anyway!! <3

Whitney Houston's LiVe concerts form '85 - '92 makes Mariah Carey sound like average amateur lounge singer. There's a reason Whitney not Mariah was nicknamed the voice. Even Tommy Mottola tried to mould early Mariah into another Whitney - it is why the whole 'White Whitney Houston thing' and the Christian church going girl next door image was groomed to Mariah (which is why Mariah resented it - it wasn't her REAL image.

@taurusg32 and there is a reason why Mariah is the best selling female singer in history and not Whitney.. Admit it, they've both had their best times in terms of vocal quality and they were at a point when they both were able to reach notes higher than any other diva and sing 100 different notes per syllable but now they are BOTH struggling, and you have you admit as well that Mariah's voice is in a far better state than Whitney's right now..

The reason Mariah was ONCE the best selling female singer was because of volume (look at how many albums Mariah kept turning out - she has turned out at least double what Whitney has ever done and Whitney is not that far behind her in sales - so sales per album Whitney wins hands down),
BUT Mariah no longer holds that record as both Celine and Madonna have overtaken her.
but got to be honest I'm sure we'll all see Beyonce overtake them all - cos that woman NEVER STOPS!!!
