You really shouldn't confuse voltage with current. Putting a resistor on a 12 volt battery only limits the current. The voltage only helps determine the correct resistor value to limit the current to the safe value

Why did you use a resistor instead of connecting several LEDs in series? Using several LEDs would reduce the voltage to each one as needed while also providing more light.

@Lolwut67 When several components with the same resistance are connected in series, the voltage across each of them is the same. For example, connecting 5 LEDS in series puts 1/5th of the original voltage across each of them. So, if you use the right number of LEDs, none will melt.

Lack of space might be a problem, though - but not an insurmountable one so long as electrical tape is used to prevent short circuiting.

Maybe I should try making a multi-LED lamp (if if find the parts/time).

I successfully built this, but i managed to drill a hole at the base of the bottle and ran the usb cable up to the top. Instead of a bright led light, i used a UV led light and filled the bottle with water and the insides of a highlighter. Cool glowing effect when the bottle lights up :) I sealed the hole at the bottom of course.
