very nice design and an interesting idea with the ratchet wheels, but is this just a proof of concept design or is there a practical application for it? do you plan to build in a compressor later?
@RustyNex It's a proof of concept. No practical applications were in mind when it was built. That project is finished, it is school property now. I haven't been to that school in ages. I actually had planned on retrofitting it with a 4500psi compressed air tank for paintball, but my professor said that a tank with that much pressure is like a bomb, and that I could not do it. It will probably remain a portable-compressor dependent machine until it is decommissioned.
@jasonrj8992 fair enough, still sounds like a fun thing to work with, my school would have never dared to fund such an interesting project. i think compressed air tanks are pretty safe, but then schools always have to be overcautious when dealing with other people's kids.
Mr. jasonrj8992 sir, i bet you did get a nice grade in your project there. I'm a mechanical engineering student, and if i may ask, could you please help me build something like that? PLEASE?

no.. i tnk u din get my quest! m asking when the middle segment goes down.. why isn't the force acting backwards on the back side wheels, whic wud dn result into backword motion... !! getting it??
@musicalhearts21 Both the front and rear wheels are ratcheting. They can only turn forwards. You can hear the ratcheting of the real wheels on the upstroke of the middle segment, and the ratcheting of the front wheels on the downstroke of it.
I got a question... when the cylinders are in return stroke... why doesn't the wheels of the rear part comeback to th inital positon?.. I mean why does the whole worm move forward only? Rest the project is superb!
@musicalhearts21 Thank you. The design is based on the locomotion of inchworms, which as far as I know, only move forward. The arrows on the controller are misleading because they appear to point forward and back. They are meant to indicate up and down, or the raising and lowering of the middle segment which results in forward motion.
It was a 4th semester project meant to prove that me and the other engineering students in my group had learned enough to design and build something mechanical during the course of our studies.
Yes this project was a bit advanced. We did more than what was expected of us and ended up impressing a lot of people. Courses taken prior to and during that semester: Statics Strength of Materials Electronics Kinematics Manufacturing Processes AutoCAD I & II Solid Modeling (using Solid Works) Fluids Robotics Physics I & II Calculus English Comp I & II and electives
Good, I like that you share this video Mechanical Engineering design project. Middlesex County College NJ Spring 2008., I wish success always
