he doesnt die. when itachi meets him and they battle, itachi uses a special sharingan move that tortures u through ur mind. he can even pretend to kill u in ur own mind, and u can actually feel it. he stabbed kakashi hundreds of times in a matter of three seconds. so it was pure torture
