Ocean water typically has 3.5% salt saturation. If you used the ocean water, your experiment would probably not turn out as you would like. #1 - Ocean water has a lot of contaminates so that would present a problem and #2, you need much more salt than just 3.5%. I have found that using distilled water and plain salt (not iodized) works much better.

@mprutherford It's worth a shot... at worst you'd have boil the ocean water and add the concentrated salt to the salt water until you got the consistency you wanted. A gallon of water makes about half a mason jar worth of salt- so you'd have to make multiple trips.;

Ocean water is contaminated (not pure) so that would present problems and there is not enough natural salt to produce anything significant. I suggest using distilled water and plain salt (not iodized). This method has produced the best results for me. Hope it's not to late. You may want to try it again.
