My uncle, a Spitfire pilot in 249 Sqn, was one of the allied pilots defending Malta against unbelievable odds. They were outnumbered in aircraft but managed to do the job. He told me how much he respected the Maltese people and their resolve against the continuous attacks.
My father was Maltes & lived in Sliema during the bombing and witnessed the dog fights & the bombing raids, His friend was killed because he didn't shelter & my father found him aftter the all clear , He also stated that the Italians would bomb from high altitude ,that changed whne the luftwaffe aririved , they would dive bomb so close you could cleary see the crew.
He also siad the fat women become skinney and cats & dogs went missing..
Thanks for the video , the history proved that Malta can be hurt but never conquered, the Maltese showed that they they will defend at all cost their country...proud to be Maltese
its good to remember your history but now we (europeans) must stand together and never again fight each other. more than 5,000 years of history and Malta was never conquered. In the Great Siege we were outnumbered 1: 10. In ww2 we were the turnpiont, amongst the first to start acieving victories. Small island big balls :)
You Maltans do have quite the balls to take on that large of odds. You have my utmost respect as warriors, plus considering your position in the Mediterranian you could hold a very strong economy.
its not about pilots being more evil...the germans had the stuka dive bombers..as the name indicate..they have to dive for precision. there was a saying that italians were more cowards becuase their planes were always high and hidden in the clouds...this rendered their bombing less precise.
Guys, my father's ship was *sunk* in the defence of Malta...no doubt the same fate happened to the ordinary Axis forces guys too, but many of them will not have survived as my father did.

Guys, understand one thing. The Maltese populace together with our British cousins threw all they had against the common enemies of Germany & Italy. The victory in the Med & indirectly even North Africa were fueled with courage & bravery from the Maltese. However we were dragged into a war which was not ours. Having said that, its better to be on the British side, then on the Axis side. My Grandpa is a WW2 vet, and he always sustains that Italians were cowards. Big Cowards
Maltese were awesome, they didnt wimp out even when they were the most bombed place on earth.
They didnt cower in the face of the Nazis and battled on until the end, even when defeat was at their very door during 1941-2 and 6-10 battered Hurricanes were facing 500 Axis aircraft.
i totally agree with you, the italians used to drop bombs on malta(im maltese) from high altitude, it was the germans who used to come in a nearly vertical power dive and drop their bombs, so as to acheve a bigger chance of getting a direct hit on something even if they came close to a lot of aunti aircraft guns and a lot of danger, still the germans were the somewhat "evil" ones because they came with hatred, the italians only came cause mussolini had told them to do so.
the german soldiers were no more 'evil' than the italian soldiers, or, for that matter, any other soldiers. all receive orders to go to war. The politicians and presidents are the "evil" ones, you must never forget that. All soldiers follow orders, in the end. it's their job.
this is not about football or fascism..this is about HISTORY.. From the Normans up to 1798Malta was always part of Sicily, Naples.. Do you really think the Knights were autonomous? they always took orders from the Sicilian/Castille/Naples crown.. The english only defended malta for their own interests.. Look at the Post War Reconstruction efforts.. Malta never recevied a fu** dime from your beloved Churchill. but fools will remain fools as long as you hand them a "loqma hubz"
british brotheres my a**... whenever did the british call someone brothers?? its only old maltese fools who still think the english saved malta in the war..saved from whom? who dragged malta into a war after all? our own cousins?? malta was and always will be a latin country..
The Axis forces wanted to take Malta so that could safely get supplies to Rommel's Afrika Korps. The British aided a great deal in holding Malta against the Axis forces. If they weren't there Malta would have fallen to the Axis forces.
I would have liked you trying to shoot down a He-111, Ju-87, Ju-88 etc etc with a "Hobza biz-Zejt." Would be entertaining to watch, I must say.
You don't say anything about when we were occupied by the Knights of St.John, Arabs, French etc do you?
we maltese fought for our own and no one ever came to help us. it was after god knows how much suffering we went through and even starvation in the shelters. then after that the english realised that malta could mean a lot for their control of the mediterrean they came.... fuc**** nazis. you should be ashamed to fight us maltese. we were unarmed and you still kept bombarding us.
Maltese are still sucking up to the english up to today. they dragged us into a war against our own italian cousins. Malta was always part of the Kingdoms of Sicily, Naples etc.. and we still say thanks to those 'fish and chips' for having defended us against our own cousins. ma andate a ffanculo tutti
Hey Aussy...long time no see huh? ahahahah oh yeah Australia big empire was it not? ahahaha You are not even a country, just a jail for English waste with no history and you want to compare yourself to Italy? ahahahaha A british colony that talks like having won a war independently? Erm...also, in case you have not understood it I don't give a fuck aboiut Mussolini! But that is hard for your tiny brain to understand, it does not fit you conceptual categories. Go and shag some cangoroo ahahahahah
ahahahahah You can only speak one language and you think you got it? ahahahah VAI a fare in culo coglione! Va te faire enculer! Du scheisser! ahahahah SUCAAAAA! Any more? P.S. why don't you tell me something about your country you shit since you think you know so much about mine? ahahahah
No arguments as usual....Ops..."arguments"? hmmm what's that? Come to motherland England to learn English you twat! ahahahaha Hey, how come you are so anti Italy, did some Italian shag your mum? We can teach you that too! No worries we'll start by showing you what a pussy looks like first! See ya Luv ahahaha
Seeing you like to strike negative chords by bringing peoples mothers into it,dont you think its about time your mum stopped blowing you and your friends?
You really do need to go out and get yourself a girlfriend (assuming anyone will have you... oh...and a life.
ahhahahah you talk badly about Italy, but you have a Ducati on the laptop!!!! What an idiot ahahah clearly you recognise our technological superiority...ahahahah you twat! Now you look stupid huh?
That's because you fucking wankers betrayed us after world war I by not giving us Dalmatia (part of national territory) and the colonies, as promised in the London conference when we rolled with you! I am glad we lost world war II as I am not a fascist...But take your responsabilities too!
Ok, but you stabbed the Central Powers, namely Austro-Hungary, by going from being an ally of theirs to declaring war on them in 1915 so you could get more land near Isonzo River. Back-stabbing a back-stabber!
Dalmatia is national territory my arse. Thats like saying Sicily is Arabic national territory since they took it over at one point.
Schultzy...Please...Austro-hungary decided to go to war without even asking Italy and we should have gone to die for country which, anyway, occupied Italy for 50 years and disrespected us as allies? Dalamatia was Italian because the cities (among which Dubrovnik ex Ragusa) where built by italians and because italians still lived there unlike arabs in Sicily! Anyway the point is that the allied said yes to this and then changed their minds!
The first statement about declaring war without asking Italy, I agree with.
However, Dubrovnik/Ragusa might have been founded by Romans but that settlement was dispersed by various invaders (Slavs, Avars, Goths). Slavs then founded the next major settlement and it fell under Byzantine influence until Venice conquered it for a time., as they had done for much of western Greece and the isles.
By the way, genetically, Arabs are still very much in Sicily :)
Yes, "Italians" lived in Dalmatia because of forced italianization. If you haven't noticed, in post WW2 Europe, winners drew borders, not losers so STFU because you're lucky Trieste is still Trieste and not Trst.
you idiot...try to talk history and not football! The overwhelming majority of Italians was against fascism and the resistance against nazi-fascism is now legendary! So don't put everyone in one pot...
ahaaha still no arguments huh? No worries I buy you a history book...But ohhh you read only football magazines or porn? No worries, come to Italy and we'll educate you! ahahahahah see ya hooligan! uh ah uh!!!
good talked... marcobagut. A estos gueones que se creen dueños de la historia..... hay que mandarlos a la mierda.... (do you understand me.... or i will write in english......)
You still upset that italy rolled over to the germans like scared little pigs?
Dont use dalmatia as an excuse you fucking dick licker.
mussolini (little wannabe hitler) always had eyes on territorial expansion and given germany's expertise in land grabbing at the time saw siding with hitler as a means of doing so.
HAHA , educate me in italy?
You teach me how to surrender? hehe
The only thing Legendary is your Cowardice and your inability to fight,LOL
Hey Aussy..I have forgotten: How can you call germany "land grabbing country" when your entire nation is based on it by robbing and killing native population? ahahah go and i hide yourself dickhead, you are only makeing a fool out of yourself. I advice you to study some German history too! P.S. history is a discipline that studies past events from many different point of views (economical, political etc.), basically what you do not have! ahahahahahah Gosh, I never had such a good time! ahahahah
Ohh sorry Aussy friend, just to keep you informed why don't you check Italian campaigns in: Iraq (battle of the bridges), kosovo, Somalia (where we saved the americans from getting bashed), Afganistan (best armoured vehicle now bought by nato forces) etc. Where were you? If you want we can lend you a few ships to come over ahahahah
They should have just done paratroop drops on malta instead of Crete. Taking Malta would have allowed Rommel to get more supplies so he could take Egypt.
OK - it was shot last year. They waited for a holiday weekend so not too many people were hurt when they bombed Valletta again. Why do so many people ask such dumb questions?
I wasn't asking a dumb question, I thought this might be an old movie from the 60s -and no, I thought it could be pyrotechnics and modeling...
this is color footage and I simply didn't know they had so much colored footage of wwii since that would have been very expensive back then. anyways, this is amazing footage then, thanks for uploading :)
malta although a small island showed its courage during the difficult periods, however we can't forget the help from england,MALTA AND ENGLAND FRIENDS FOREVER
I am maltese I love Germans I dont have heart feelings for them BUT fuck all the nazi who threw bombs on us they killed our families and our rich history
The Maltese to this day can not forgive the Germans for the mass bombing of civilians. If I was German I would not want to come to Malta for a holiday. I`m English and spend a lot of time here. I have no argument with the German tourists as most of them are polite and quiet, but I see on a regular basis the cold shoulder given to them by my Maltese friends. The luftwaffe did make a hell of a mess of some wonderful buildings like the old opera house. Time does not heal ALL wounds.
To be honest I feel that the english actually involved us in war..the germans had no other way when you used our island and poorly defended it than to attack us...but we bear no grudge either against the english who we love and welcome dearly as brothers and also germans who I myself admire even for the past achievments in war...yes people were killed...it was war after all.! and the germans came when the italians were making a fool of themselves flying up high and throw bombs wherever.
I to have great respect for the German people but not the Nazis. As for Malta being used, yes there is some truth in that but the Maltese alon could not have defnded the islands from the Italians who also would have used it as a stepping stone to north Africa.
If it wasn't for the British help the Luftwaffe would'v sank us, those who remeber this battle say that the Italians used to drop bombs inaccuratly from 1000s of feet high but the Germans Stukas used to dive-bombing & hitting their targets. They wanted to starve us too. Bastards!!! Thanks to the Brits & our gunners no German soldier set his foot on Malta.
lost miserably? they never tried to invade, and they sank many capital ships and much materiel in the harbor. Sure they suffered losses, but so did the RAF. Just like at Munchenberg's unit and the kills they racked up over Malta...
lame excuses. The Luftwaffe scoring system was more rigorous than most airforces, and certainly more rigourous than the USAAF. My great uncle was two "probables" discounted because there was no second witness. In the USAAF they would have been kills. RAF/USAAF fansboys like you have a serious case of "ace-envy"!!!
Usuall revisionist misinfrmation. The luftwaffe overclaiming was one of the reasons Germany lost the war! You might have had high kill ratios over USSR in the early days, but the back of the Luftwaffe effectivley broken in the Battle of Britain, which I might also add was another debale for the Nazi's. The Luftwaffe's mission was to impose air superiority in both battles. They didnt. They failed.
The reason why allied pilots didnt get the same amount of 'kills' as their Nazi counterparts is not only due to overclaiming but a system of rest and rotation. You will find that kills are spread more evenly with in Allied airforces.
you cant compare such things...you have to see who was outnumbered first..and remember there was the maltese artillery brigade shooting antiaircraft against the germans..they learned their lesson well ...the maltese never surrender we have the heart and courage of a lion neither the ottoman turks nor the german nazis managed a stronghold...the english we let them come in only coz we liked their way of thinking hehe ;p peace
I think this is a great video but of course my mum and dad were kids in the stone shelters and on the recieving end as for the grown ups they must have been quite mad that they could not go about their usual life and their stomach was empty.
However it would have been good for maltese blood had the italians and germans taken it.
As for Malta it was Stalingrad and Hitler's crazy ambitions that saved it really and not the Malta Convoy.
Its sad to see this because my uncle died from shell shock at 6 years old from german bombing raids, if only i could of known him & his offspring :( Having been there & seen the b-shelters & the little MALTA had (rats if you were lucky), its nice to know that "hitler" with all those bombs couldn't kill the MORAL of a people from the little rock in the Mediterranean. Go Malta

u wouldn't say fantastic my friend if you lvied in Malta in that period, we lost a lof of our precious heritage together with a lot of lives due to the war,
"That is true. I [verurteile?] every [Form?] of war, of all against civilians." (Think it might be I dislike every type of war against civilians. I am guessing on that).
"Regardless, I have great respect for the chivalry and comradery of the pilots of all nations."
sorry pls speak in English otherwise I switch to Maltese >. jekk joghgbok tkellem bl-Ingliz, ma nifhimx l-ilsien tieghek jien, Nroddlok Hajr bil-quddiem
My father was from Mosta. A cousin was killed in the bombing. If Malta fell, it just would have taken longer for Rommel to be defeated. Sicily would have been taken, later on thats all. It would have been a tragedy for Malta. Can you imagine B-17s bombing Germans in Malta?
my mother is maltese and my father is from chester england. All I have to say is that the maltese should be proud of what they did however I think that the george cross was not enough for what they went through.I think , that theathre of war was all about oil and nothing else .for if malta would have fallen rommel would have had all the reserves needed to take egypt and the middle east.Anyway the italians were cowards and as for those germans , their just bastards
Oh come on! Dont get me wrong I greatly admire the Italians (lovely cars, food, way of life, language, culture etc) but you must admit you were a bit useless in WW2. Your airforce was hacked to bits when you tried to attack the UK with the Germans during the Battle of Britain and your fleet was destroyed at Taranto by old biplane Fairey Swordfishes. No disrespect intended to your lovely country but the last time you had any real military success was back with Romans.
Hitler's defeat : many words, few facts and these few facts badly executed : Grece etc. Do you know that Mussolini was so idiot to give constantly suggestions to Rommel about how to operate in Afrika? It is how if I would have tried to teach Einstein mathematics!!
im very proud too be maltese as these bustards ended by losing the war , one should say that malta was one of the keys and had a very important role for the british to win WW2 . its hard to belive that a very small island in the hearth of the mediteranean sea stoped continues supplys bettween italy and libya one can say that malta has only the size of 25%approx of tripoli , LOVE MALTA FOREVER !!
first of all well dobe for his video. Now about the British, Italian & Germans, my granfather used to say that the Italians never used to hit the target, as they always flew too high since they were scared, while the Germans used to fly really low. The Italians never harmed us, it was the Germans who destroyed most of our historic buildings. As for the English, we can only thank them for defending us, but it was also their fault if we were bombed at the first place.
My grandfather was a battery sergeant in Ft. St. Peter, and he always says the same thing as you did!
"As for the English, we can only thank them for defending us, but it was also their fault if we were bombed at the first place" You couldn't have put it in a better way!! Well done my friend.

brings back memories of the war and the incredible suffering. The maltese always knew when the Germans were bombing..more accurate and courageous. Nevertheless, they could not take the island or break her spirit. Thank you for this video.
The italians couldn't manage alone & alongside the Luftwaffe they can kiss our asses for good... although some might theorize that if Malta was on the Axis side we would have suffered the same from the British I highly doubt that would have been the case due to the circumstances of each country, I'm proud we managed to mutually stand by eachother US Maltese & the British.
P.S JanofMalta at least learn to spell HISTORY before you post.

this is not about football or fascism..this is about HISTORY.. From the Normans up to 1798Malta was always part of Sicily, Naples.. Do you really think the Knights were autonomous? they always took orders from the Sicilian/Castille/Naples crown.. The english only defended malta for their own interests.. Look at the Post War Reconstruction efforts.. Malta never recevied a fu** dime from your beloved Churchill. but fools will remain fools as long as you hand them a "loqma hubz"
mikbar92 3 years ago
british brotheres my a**... whenever did the british call someone brothers?? its only old maltese fools who still think the english saved malta in the war..saved from whom? who dragged malta into a war after all? our own cousins?? malta was and always will be a latin country..
mikbar92 3 years ago
The Axis forces wanted to take Malta so that could safely get supplies to Rommel's Afrika Korps. The British aided a great deal in holding Malta against the Axis forces. If they weren't there Malta would have fallen to the Axis forces.
I would have liked you trying to shoot down a He-111, Ju-87, Ju-88 etc etc with a "Hobza biz-Zejt." Would be entertaining to watch, I must say.
You don't say anything about when we were occupied by the Knights of St.John, Arabs, French etc do you?
Nieheh 3 years ago
we maltese fought for our own and no one ever came to help us. it was after god knows how much suffering we went through and even starvation in the shelters. then after that the english realised that malta could mean a lot for their control of the mediterrean they came.... fuc**** nazis. you should be ashamed to fight us maltese. we were unarmed and you still kept bombarding us.

Maltese are still sucking up to the english up to today. they dragged us into a war against our own italian cousins. Malta was always part of the Kingdoms of Sicily, Naples etc.. and we still say thanks to those 'fish and chips' for having defended us against our own cousins. ma andate a ffanculo tutti

emgee65 3 years ago
That's because you fucking wankers betrayed us after world war I by not giving us Dalmatia (part of national territory) and the colonies, as promised in the London conference when we rolled with you! I am glad we lost world war II as I am not a fascist...But take your responsabilities too!
marcobagut 3 years ago
Ok, but you stabbed the Central Powers, namely Austro-Hungary, by going from being an ally of theirs to declaring war on them in 1915 so you could get more land near Isonzo River. Back-stabbing a back-stabber!
Dalmatia is national territory my arse. Thats like saying Sicily is Arabic national territory since they took it over at one point.
SSchultz82 3 years ago
Schultzy...Please...Austro-hungary decided to go to war without even asking Italy and we should have gone to die for country which, anyway, occupied Italy for 50 years and disrespected us as allies? Dalamatia was Italian because the cities (among which Dubrovnik ex Ragusa) where built by italians and because italians still lived there unlike arabs in Sicily! Anyway the point is that the allied said yes to this and then changed their minds!
marcobagut 3 years ago
The first statement about declaring war without asking Italy, I agree with.
However, Dubrovnik/Ragusa might have been founded by Romans but that settlement was dispersed by various invaders (Slavs, Avars, Goths). Slavs then founded the next major settlement and it fell under Byzantine influence until Venice conquered it for a time., as they had done for much of western Greece and the isles.
By the way, genetically, Arabs are still very much in Sicily :)
SSchultz82 3 years ago
Yes, "Italians" lived in Dalmatia because of forced italianization. If you haven't noticed, in post WW2 Europe, winners drew borders, not losers so STFU because you're lucky Trieste is still Trieste and not Trst.

is this movie footage? it looks somewhat like it could be real wwii footage except it's color... when was this really shot?
naga0 3 years ago
OK - it was shot last year. They waited for a holiday weekend so not too many people were hurt when they bombed Valletta again. Why do so many people ask such dumb questions?
donmcgee 3 years ago
I wasn't asking a dumb question, I thought this might be an old movie from the 60s -and no, I thought it could be pyrotechnics and modeling...
this is color footage and I simply didn't know they had so much colored footage of wwii since that would have been very expensive back then. anyways, this is amazing footage then, thanks for uploading :)

Time does not heal ALL wounds.
kn1ghtstemplar 3 years ago 2
To be honest I feel that the english actually involved us in war..the germans had no other way when you used our island and poorly defended it than to attack us...but we bear no grudge either against the english who we love and welcome dearly as brothers and also germans who I myself admire even for the past achievments in war...yes people were killed...it was war after all.! and the germans came when the italians were making a fool of themselves flying up high and throw bombs wherever.
futuramark 3 years ago
I to have great respect for the German people but not the Nazis. As for Malta being used, yes there is some truth in that but the Maltese alon could not have defnded the islands from the Italians who also would have used it as a stepping stone to north Africa.
kn1ghtstemplar 3 years ago
If it wasn't for the British help the Luftwaffe would'v sank us, those who remeber this battle say that the Italians used to drop bombs inaccuratly from 1000s of feet high but the Germans Stukas used to dive-bombing & hitting their targets. They wanted to starve us too. Bastards!!! Thanks to the Brits & our gunners no German soldier set his foot on Malta.
Suppressingfire 3 years ago 5
Yes - Luftwaffe Battle for Malta; which they lost miserably.
moonlightflyer 3 years ago
lost miserably? they never tried to invade, and they sank many capital ships and much materiel in the harbor. Sure they suffered losses, but so did the RAF. Just like at Munchenberg's unit and the kills they racked up over Malta...
jdoernte 3 years ago
Lets not bring up the subject of rampant German overclaming!!
They never tried to invade because of the debacle of the invasion of Crete!!
moonlightflyer 3 years ago
lame excuses. The Luftwaffe scoring system was more rigorous than most airforces, and certainly more rigourous than the USAAF. My great uncle was two "probables" discounted because there was no second witness. In the USAAF they would have been kills. RAF/USAAF fansboys like you have a serious case of "ace-envy"!!!
jdoernte 3 years ago
Usuall revisionist misinfrmation. The luftwaffe overclaiming was one of the reasons Germany lost the war! You might have had high kill ratios over USSR in the early days, but the back of the Luftwaffe effectivley broken in the Battle of Britain, which I might also add was another debale for the Nazi's. The Luftwaffe's mission was to impose air superiority in both battles. They didnt. They failed.
moonlightflyer 3 years ago 2
The reason why allied pilots didnt get the same amount of 'kills' as their Nazi counterparts is not only due to overclaiming but a system of rest and rotation. You will find that kills are spread more evenly with in Allied airforces.
moonlightflyer 3 years ago 2
you cant compare such things...you have to see who was outnumbered first..and remember there was the maltese artillery brigade shooting antiaircraft against the germans..they learned their lesson well ...the maltese never surrender we have the heart and courage of a lion neither the ottoman turks nor the german nazis managed a stronghold...the english we let them come in only coz we liked their way of thinking hehe ;p peace

May Scipio Africanus come save us and deliver us.

My father was from Mosta. A cousin was killed in the bombing. If Malta fell, it just would have taken longer for Rommel to be defeated. Sicily would have been taken, later on thats all. It would have been a tragedy for Malta. Can you imagine B-17s bombing Germans in Malta?

bushgam 4 years ago

You are right. Mussolini is one big cause of
Hitler's defeat : many words, few facts and these few facts badly executed : Grece etc. Do you know that Mussolini was so idiot to give constantly suggestions to Rommel about how to operate in Afrika? It is how if I would have tried to teach Einstein mathematics!!

first of all well dobe for his video.
