Tanks create Ammonia build-up, which is highly toxic. And Please get you rats another female rat they need to live in pairs. Rats live in packs of the hundreds in the wild, the least you could do is get another. its not much more work, just about $10 extra for another rat. btw the rat manor is perfect, so are martins cages.
I had a pet rat called Snow who looked like yours, he was ill all his life because he had problem breathing I was so sad when he died but now I got a new rat called Dizzy who is funtstic :D by the way Im sorry too hear about Salty.
I not tryin to tell you how to raise your rat by any means, just a suggestion:
The Petco brand "Rat Manor", is awsome. Its alittle pricey at $108, but my two rats absolutly LOVE IT!! Haha, ino its ironic, my rats costed me $8 for both and &108 for the cage. haha, they are worth it though!!
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check it out. I know, the money we spend on our pets can be really ridiculous but, as you say, it's totally worth it!
Hee hee! She is (was) very cute. Unfortunately, Salty left this earth a few months ago. I have a new rat, Dexter. I have one video of him posted but hope to make more soon. Thanks for your comment!
ok i didnt get a hamster i got a rat i took my hamster back cause he bit me 2 times so i got a whit dumbo rat he always poops on me when i pick him up his name is snowball
A rat is a much smarter pet to have! Snowball is a cute name! My new rat Dexter is also a white albino. To prevent Snowball from pooping on you, before you take him out of his case, tug up on his tail GENTLY a couple of times. The goal is to pull hard enough to lift his hind legs up a bit, but not too hard that you injure him. Doing this will sometimes get the rat to poop with a couple of tugs on his tail (pull straight up). Again, GENTLY! It works for my rats, try it and see!
Salty suddenly developed some kind of neurological problem and was unable to keep her balance, drink, or anything. We tried to do as much for her as we could, but we finally had to have her put down. :(
I have never had a hamster, so I'm can't really compare. But I would definitely go with a rat -- rats are MUCH smarter than hamsters and are very "people friendly" -- they love human interaction and contact and can even be trained (if you have the patience) to do tricks. I would definitely do some online research about the differences so that you can make a good and smart choice. Good luck and keep me posted!
I have had both as pets and I say definately go with the rat. I love mine so much. Hamsters can be suprisingly agressive and bite-my rats are sweet and never bite.
Thanks for your comment! Sadly, Salty developed some kind of neurological problem and I had to put her down in May 2008. Check out the last video I did in her memory.
sorry about Salty my albino's sick to, lung disease poor Jazz...I'm going to get a sphinx rat (those bald ones so cute!) when she passes on sure gunna miss her...
I'm sorry to hear your rat is sick. Were you able to take Jazz to a vet? Sometimes your vet can give the rat antibiotics to get rid of the lung problem. Make sure you give her lots of love and affection before she passes. Good luck and thanks for your comment.
Yes, she's a "PEW" which means pink eyed white. Sadly, Salty developed some kind of neurological problem and I had to put her down in May 2008. Check out the last video I did in her memory.
Salty was actually a petite little critter. She easily fit in the palm of my hand and she loved to sit on my shoulder and watch TV. Sadly, she developed a neurological problem and I had to put her down this past May 2008. Check out the last video I created in her memory. Did you ever get your rats?
No I didn't. My family decided we wanted a dog. So I can get rats next year when he is a bit more grown up. He's nowhere near vicious and is quiet so it should be okay.
My partner and I give her lots of love and attention so while she probably would love a roommate, she's all we had. Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately, Salty developed a neurological disorder for some reason and I had to put her down. She was about 3 years old. Check out her last video that I created and posted today.
I'm so sorry to hear about that. Unfortunately, rats are very susceptible to pneumonia. Unfortunately, my Salty developed a neurological disorder for some reason and I had to put her down. She was about 3 years old. Check out her last video that I created and posted today.

It's about 4 feet long and about 2 feet deep and about 1 1/2 feet high. I put her in an acrylic acquarium since I have a naughty rat who would love to put her paws in between a wire cage.
that's what i'm afraid of, i want to buy a rat but i've read that they need companion from another rats but i can only have one. is your Salty lonely or stressed from not being with another rats?
It's true that rats, like any other animal, including humans, would probably prefer the company of a "roommate" as would Salty. I'm not in the habit of justifying the reasons why I only have one rat instead of two or three, suffice it to say that I got Salty from a rat rescue group -- they saved her from being put down or used as snake food. We have had six rescue rats. Three of those had a chance of going for snake food. It's great to know that you can help to give a rat who is lonely and blue without a family or a home, the wonderful life in which it deserves.
I don't understand how people can be cruel to these beautiful little creatures who can give so much love and affection and become so much part of the family. Salty is a beautiful mate she has a wonderful life with you, she looks really happy and well loved.

Yep that's right. That's what we always say. Our rats and other animals aren't just animals, they are part of the family. A rat doesn't need another rat to feel as though they have are loved or have a family. We are thier family.

I'm so sorry to hear about Lucy (great name by the way). Yeah, unfortunately rats don't live very long 3-5 years tops. I take real good care of her, fresh veggies, fruits, etc. My roommate is a registered veterinary technician, so he makes sure that Salty is always in good health. Thanks for your comment!
un soir j'ai vue un esprie . il ma dit " tu vas mourir " est il a disparue . maintenant que vous avez lu sa vous aller mourir dans 3 jours exactement sauf si vous mettez sa sur 50 video, c'est pas de moi
no they do not, ive read that rats spend 1/3 of the day cleaning themselves. If the little smell that they do have bothers you, then you could just clean their litter box every day. (yes, they can be litter box trained)
I agree with ratman528. Rats are meticulously clean and primp and prean a lot! The key to controlling odor is to clean their cages on a regular basis for their comfort as well as yours. Male rats can sometimes smell more because their urine has a strong odor to it. I tend to prefer female rats because their urine does not smell as strong, but again, if you keep their cages clean, male or female, you can easily control the odor. Good luck!
I've never had mice, but I can tell you that rats do not stink up a room unless you don't clean their cages regularly (see my additional comment above to ratman528.
No rats definately don't smell as bad as mice. No matter how often mice are cleaned out, ten minutes later they smell just as bad, and especially male mice. But with rats I agree with laguna172, rats do not stink a room out unless you don't clean them out often. They are cleaner than us.
I use to have a pet rat whch i took very good care of and it was very loving. But then after it broke its neck and died (very sad something i dont want to get into now) i got a new one. It was very agresive and bit me more than opnce drawing blood. After a while do they become tame?
I have had two rescue rats and both were biters. We got around our rats no problem. Usually biting happens because the rat is afraid. If the rat is only biting in the cage, then allow rat out often and let it know that it's safe. Offer treats near the door of it's cage at first and in time, start to move your hand in a bit further every few days, you may get nipped on the way, but you will get there. The rat must gain trust in you and you trust in the rat. Slow and steady wins the rats trust...
I usually do have 2 rats at a time but I got Salty from a rat rescue and she was the only one available! I give her lots of love and attention, so I don't think she's too lonely. Thanks for your comment!
Yup! Actually, Salty's a girl, but definitely albino. I have lots of pics of her too but it's difficult to not get the "redeye" effect -- she comes out much better in videos!
Salty is a beauty.I have a pet rat, Archie, he's so sweet. His brother died at just 8 months from respiratory illness, but Archie has just celebrated his second birthday, and is still going strong.Rats make the best pets, so smart, affectionate and sweet.
Archie is a great name for a rat! Too bad about his brother :( I've lost a couple of rats from respiratory disease as well. Make sure you post some vidoes of Archie and share!
Mine died of a tumor, she was pretty old though. 2 1/2-3 years I think. The first time she got one, we got it removed, but she got 2 more about a year later, so we put her down. Rats make greats pets too.
Sounds like you took really good care of her. I'm sorry to hear that you eventually had to put her down. Unfortunately, I've had to do the same. Check out my video "Lois my old pet rat" who had a tumor and I had to put her down too.
i know that my pet rat loves runnigna round my computer room, just seal off your room from cables, etc. and let her run around. try laying around some treats she can stach somewhere =)
i had a pet rat called jingles once she onlylived for 2 years and 2 months, wud have lived a little bit longer i suppose if i kept her upstairs. as my parents smoke. but its so upsetting that a cute intellegent cute little mammal doesnt have a long lifespan that god shud give it
Sorry to hear about that. Jingles lived about the average age for a rat, despite the smoke environment. As you say, it is upsetting that they don't live longer and I am always totally devastated when my rats die. I guess when Mother Earth wants her creatures back, there's no stopping her.
aww she looks just like m rat, smudge, with those lovely red eyes, exept smudge has a little smudge above his nose and another above his tail, ive had 8 rats now, but i only got four left: tom, gerry, smudge, tux. the four that died were called: sugar, honey, blue and shadow :(
Those are great names for rats! I had a grey hooded rat named Spot because he had a white spot on his forehead. I have a friend whose nickname is Smudge (and he's a human!).
for the person below the rat looks completelt happy and It isn't against the law to have 1 pet rat although if you have only one you have to make sure that you give it alot of love and attention which it looks like it gets alot of, and the cage this person has is fine they can have either a cage like this or one with a bars so i don't think you really no what you are talking about....
looks like one of my rats.

no they do not, ive read that rats spend 1/3 of the day cleaning themselves. If the little smell that they do have bothers you, then you could just clean their litter box every day. (yes, they can be litter box trained)
ratman528 4 years ago
I agree with ratman528. Rats are meticulously clean and primp and prean a lot! The key to controlling odor is to clean their cages on a regular basis for their comfort as well as yours. Male rats can sometimes smell more because their urine has a strong odor to it. I tend to prefer female rats because their urine does not smell as strong, but again, if you keep their cages clean, male or female, you can easily control the odor. Good luck!

i might get a rat.but do they stink up your room like mice do?
stephanieat07 4 years ago
I've never had mice, but I can tell you that rats do not stink up a room unless you don't clean their cages regularly (see my additional comment above to ratman528.
laguna172 4 years ago
No rats definately don't smell as bad as mice. No matter how often mice are cleaned out, ten minutes later they smell just as bad, and especially male mice. But with rats I agree with laguna172, rats do not stink a room out unless you don't clean them out often. They are cleaner than us.

I use to have a pet rat whch i took very good care of and it was very loving. But then after it broke its neck and died (very sad something i dont want to get into now) i got a new one. It was very agresive and bit me more than opnce drawing blood. After a while do they become tame?
katgab4 4 years ago

Salty is such a retty rat...ive seen like all of ur videos...is he an albino rat?
maggot666guitarist 4 years ago

STANSEATTLE 4 years ago
Archie is a great name for a rat! Too bad about his brother :( I've lost a couple of rats from respiratory disease as well. Make sure you post some vidoes of Archie and share!

Mine died of a tumor, she was pretty old though. 2 1/2-3 years I think. The first time she got one, we got it removed, but she got 2 more about a year later, so we put her down. Rats make greats pets too.
YertleDaTurtle 4 years ago
Sounds like you took really good care of her. I'm sorry to hear that you eventually had to put her down. Unfortunately, I've had to do the same. Check out my video "Lois my old pet rat" who had a tumor and I had to put her down too.

i had a pet rat called jingles once she onlylived for 2 years and 2 months, wud have lived a little bit longer i suppose if i kept her upstairs. as my parents smoke. but its so upsetting that a cute intellegent cute little mammal doesnt have a long lifespan that god shud give it
Heatseeker872591 4 years ago
Sorry to hear about that. Jingles lived about the average age for a rat, despite the smoke environment. As you say, it is upsetting that they don't live longer and I am always totally devastated when my rats die. I guess when Mother Earth wants her creatures back, there's no stopping her.

MaRomanesqueChimique 4 years ago
Those are great names for rats! I had a grey hooded rat named Spot because he had a white spot on his forehead. I have a friend whose nickname is Smudge (and he's a human!).

Your little ratty is such a little cutey bless.
for the person below the rat looks completelt happy and It isn't against the law to have 1 pet rat although if you have only one you have to make sure that you give it alot of love and attention which it looks like it gets alot of, and the cage this person has is fine they can have either a cage like this or one with a bars so i don't think you really no what you are talking about....
