im sorry but this is a ridiculous construction. ballistas were designed for firing at a much more horizontal angle, and by looking at your firing none of the missiles would have done any damage to anything. The arrow doesn't even go straight. Ballistas were much higher tension than this rubbish, to the extent that arrows were known to impale 4 ranks of men at once. this is actually an insult to the genius of roman military engineering. leave it to the professionals
@Vespasian12345 For one who seems to know neither the pluralisation nor the origin of the device, you manage a great deal of criticism. A) Plural is "ballistae" and B) Ballista is of Greek origin, not Roman.
For a school project drawn up and constructed by the students, this ballista is pretty impressive.
@Vespasian12345 None of the missiles would have done damage? Did you see the hole the ball was in. If that hit someone I'd say it'd do a fair bit of damage. Professionals only know what they're doing thanks to learning which is what these guys are doing so whereas yes it isn't perfect I should like to point out that neither are you through some clear portrayals of ignorance in your comment.
I just wanted to say that you guys did an amazing job! I also have to build a ballista and I need your help. How do you make the torsion spring for the half-spring? How did you twist the cords and what kind did you use? Also, how did you make your trigger mechanism? We are looking for a simple design with easy to buy parts. Lastly, we need to launch a tennis ball and will need to modify the slide. What should we do, something similar to yours?
i need help- how should i connect the wood on my ballista? its about this big. would a simple mortis and tenon do? should I nail them? and what wood should i use for the body and arms?
hey i built two ballistas already i know what im talking about. havent posted my videos yet.but defenetly use screws and washers.okay drill a hole the size of the washer you are goin to be using. put the washer in the hole, pre drill a hole in the middle of the washer already in the wood. predrill a hole smaller than the thickness of screw you will be using. drill in the screw... it will be secure and rock solid... oh pre drill everything or the wood will split.
Hi, I'm trying to build one of these for a Classics project. I'm have to be able to build an effective ballista that's will only be about a foot long or so, and I'm having trouble finding any good specs for that size. Can you help me out please?
my friends an I built one of these out of a bowflex excercize machine, after we made it so it had more torque we could get a max range of 146 feet shooting a 3ft peice of rebar
Nice!!! do you have any detailed work sketches, or perhaps detailed pics. did you have any fletching on the dart, i think its tail was a bit heavy... butt Nice!!
You're machine is a good attempt to make a ballista, but it has a problem with the bowstring. You have to make it wider, like a belt made out of rope, so you wouldn't need that
odd wooden piece between the ball and the launch mechanism that lowers your accuracy and power.
That's a great ballista. I've made one of about the same size but of less power. I couldn't coil it very efficiently. It fires a large fletched bolt a moderate distance. There's a video of it on my channel.
Love it! If I ever get rich I want to build a Ballista that will throw telephone poles (easily aquired at your local electric service work yard) tipped with giant metal broadheads.
