  • cool, does this train do all east coast?

  • Check out Amtrak's website for routes and schedules. Trains from Boston go all the way down to DC and Virginia. Trains from New York City go down to Florida.

  • OMG I always take the Grand Central to manhatten and never have i seen on a train on that bridge. It's either always under construction or just empty. So i guess the bridge is still functional huh?

  • Video was made 10 or 20 years ago.

  • Nope that bridge is still active. That is called "Hell Gate".

  • Grand Central (Metro-North) trains use different approaches than Amtrak because Amtrak doesn't go to Grand Central.

  • Amtrak used to operate into Grand Central until 1991.

  • I just noticed something. This train is actually heading away from Manhattan because the Tri-borough bridge is to the right of the Hell Gate Bridge. If a train is inbound to Manhattan, it would be on the left side if passengers are facing forward. Still a great video :)

  • Train is heading into NYC. I have made the trip many many times. Video ends just before train enters tunnel that goes under the river to Penn. Station.

  • You're right! Sorry, it's been many years. I forgot that the tracks run parallel to Manhattan Island, then curve away eastward and cross over the HG Bridge. Afterwards they dip into the tunnel in Queens, just across the bridge, and curve westward directly to Penn Station. It's circuititious, but at 70mph (if trains still do that speed on the bridge) the trains don't take long at all.

  • After you wrote the first time I looked at some maps. That confused me even further because they seemed to indicate that you were right. But, I have made the trip many times.

  • PKingmen, you are correct! :) I went to Google Maps and typed in "Penn Station". I followed the tracks east (Boston bound). The lead east towards Queens, turn back northwest, cross over the HG Bridge and then curve northward to New England. - God Bless

  • So, you bypass Penn station?

  • No. The Amtrak train from Boston goes into Penn Station and then continues south towards Newark, Wilmington, Philadelphia, Washington and Newport News, VA.

  • And don't forget Baltimore.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! It stirs up So many fond memories for me. I grew up in New York back in the 60s and early 1970s. That was neat how you shot the view of the Hell Gate Bridge before your train crossed it. Which train were you riding? Yankee Clipper?

  • Not sure what the name of this particular train was or whether Amtrak had already gotten rid of all the great old names and just made them all some sort generic name. Whatever, it was probably the train that left South Station, Boston around 7 AM. That's the train I usually took. Got to NYC around Noon or 1 PM.

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
