Kate Rusby has the most hauntingly heart-wrenching voice i've ever heard, and when singing such a song as this, let's face it...if this doesn't get to you, well, you're just not human.
I prefer Kate's version to the Decembrist's interpretation.
Hers sounds like a beautiful tale of lost love destroyed by unfortunate chance. The image of a knight charging forth with all his valiance and speed, riding hard into the night. His courage high and spirits strained. But the simple truth that his physical body cannot keep up with the strength of his will ends his quest with tragedy.
@shazam15 You should listen to the full album- it's a full story. The interpretation of this song that they used was part of the plot. In context, it makes much more sense than as a stand-alone song. I think you should give the album a chance before calling it "hipster nonsense".
That said, this version is still better. It's absolutely beautiful in every way.
I have. Usually I enjoy new interpretations of songs, but theirs lacked the.... spirit of the untouched original. And I think that's unacceptable. Regradless whether they used it to further the plot of their album.
Oh my god, this song is the saddest song I've ever heard. It's beautiful but it makes me cry so much. It's so heart breaking. It's even worse than the christmas song about the boy who s trying to buy shoes for his dying mother.
Kate supported Richard Thompson on tour, about the time of the Hourglass release. Saw them at the Hawth in Crawley. Typical audience - half full auditorium and talking over the "warm-up" She did this first or second number (she only did three) self-accompanied on keyboard. Silence reigned and jaws dropped (well mine did anyway).
I just spent two weeks in the UK on work assignment, my only downfall was not being able to get to a show. I was so disapointed. Was going to tkae a train up to Scotland to see her but was no tsure about a ticket. Maybe someday she will tour the States. She is a rare gem
The more I listen to this the more i appreciate the wonderful accompaniment. All too often a good singer and song are ruined by an atrocious setting; the strings and piano on this are superb and add greatly to my enjoyment.
You know, if you're going to post photos and lyrics, and songs by an artist, you'd think you'd have the sense to say which album you swiped them off of... Which in this case appears to be
What did she do to deserve such a caustic comment? I don't think she 'Swiped' anything, I heard this long ago and can't even remember the source. Personally grateful to have the lyrics and such a nice rendition. Lighten up!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
On the other hand, given the singer and the song title, it would have taken about two seconds Googling to work out what album it's from. So relax, for fuck's sake.
Once the pipes kick in I get chills up my spine - Celtic music is beautiful and Kate's voice is perfection. I'm not a folk music man but I have become a fan of Kate Rusby.
I found this by accident while searching for "Annan Water" by the Decemberists. I now own all of Kate's albums.

@shazam15 I disagree, but suit yourself. It just pisses me off when people use name-calling when they don't agree with or dislike something.

I am sorry for in this one instance, that I have not included the album on which this song features.
It was a minor oversight, which, to my knowledge, has never happened before.
I assure you, that this 'misdemeanor', will not happen again.
Through your "contstructive" criticism, I shall ammend the problem, and you can be happy knowing you've done the world some good

She's marvellous.
Saw her in Oxford, waited for an hour until she came out the back of the theatre, only to find that she had to get straight back on the road! Gutted!
