  • I found this by accident while searching for "Annan Water" by the Decemberists. I now own all of Kate's albums.

  • See her halo shine for Angelic song our Kate does sing and sweetly too. X

  • roy west

  • Absolutely beautiful.

Kate Rusby has the most hauntingly heart-wrenching voice i've ever heard, and when singing such a song as this, let's face it...if this doesn't get to you, well, you're just not human.

  • You did a beautiful job putting this video together! With the pictures and the music....BRAVO! Que Bella!

  • So I guess the boatman didn't let him use the boat.

  • Still love this so much

  • I prefer Kate's version to the Decembrist's interpretation.

Hers sounds like a beautiful tale of lost love destroyed by unfortunate chance. The image of a knight charging forth with all his valiance and speed, riding hard into the night. His courage high and spirits strained. But the simple truth that his physical body cannot keep up with the strength of his will ends his quest with tragedy.

    Theirs sounds like hipster nonsense.

  • @shazam15 You should listen to the full album- it's a full story. The interpretation of this song that they used was part of the plot. In context, it makes much more sense than as a stand-alone song. I think you should give the album a chance before calling it "hipster nonsense".

That said, this version is still better. It's absolutely beautiful in every way.

  • @kyrakyramyra

I have. Usually I enjoy new interpretations of songs, but theirs lacked the.... spirit of the untouched original. And I think that's unacceptable. Regradless whether they used it to further the plot of their album.

  • @shazam15 I disagree, but suit yourself. It just pisses me off when people use name-calling when they don't agree with or dislike something.

  • I will listen to that lady till the end of my life, whatever she will sing, she completes my world

  • she is beautifal!!!

  • Oh my god, this song is the saddest song I've ever heard. It's beautiful but it makes me cry so much. It's so heart breaking. It's even worse than the christmas song about the boy who s trying to buy shoes for his dying mother.

  • Thanks her sister Kate for sharing this lady's voice. She is in my top 5 people to listen to now.

  • That is just tremendous. Powerful singer.

  • Thanks for uploading this

  • Wow! How come I never heard of Kate before? Her voice is amazing! I must check out more of her music.

    Thanks Rusby08 for posting this.

  • Kate supported Richard Thompson on tour, about the time of the Hourglass release. Saw them at the Hawth in Crawley. Typical audience - half full auditorium and talking over the "warm-up" She did this first or second number (she only did three) self-accompanied on keyboard. Silence reigned and jaws dropped (well mine did anyway).

  • I just spent two weeks in the UK on work assignment, my only downfall was not being able to get to a show. I was so disapointed. Was going to tkae a train up to Scotland to see her but was no tsure about a ticket. Maybe someday she will tour the States. She is a rare gem

  • I want to have a million of her babies.

  • Take a drop of rain and fill it with an Angels song. Our Kate is the warmest shower. x

  • Precious jewel here, people!

The song, the singer, and the experience.

  • this is quite possibly the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. I'd swear she was an angel!

  • The more I listen to this the more i appreciate the wonderful accompaniment. All too often a good singer and song are ruined by an atrocious setting; the strings and piano on this are superb and add greatly to my enjoyment.

  • How beautiful! I have a new favourite singer!

  • she did another version of this called ' bring me a boat' i think. with slightly different words and a different melody. :]

  • Im new to kates beautiful music really, but shes getting me through a tough time,im glad i found her music :)

  • You're not alone. Hope things are getting better

  • Thanks for the post Rusby08 - and all the others youve put up as well.

People are weird in this space. All there is to say is thank you and godbless. This is such a sweet heartache and true true true.

  • What a wonderful version of this song which has long been one of my favourites at folk clubs and singarounds, thank you for putting it on!

  • I am sorry for in this one instance, that I have not included the album on which this song features.

It was a minor oversight, which, to my knowledge, has never happened before.

I assure you, that this 'misdemeanor', will not happen again.

Through your "contstructive" criticism, I shall ammend the problem, and you can be happy knowing you've done the world some good

  • What did she do to deserve such a caustic comment? I don't think she 'Swiped' anything, I heard this long ago and can't even remember the source. Personally grateful to have the lyrics and such a nice rendition. Lighten up!!

  • This is my favorite of Kates songs. Its so beautiful and mournful, and its such a sad, romantic story, it always makes me tear up.

  • After I have had a few snifters, I blubb when I hear this!

  • It doesn't even take a few snifters for me :'-)

  • WHATS IS A SNIFTER

  • An alcoholic drink! For me a dram of whiskey

  • For me it is a dram of whiskey

  • Try listening to kierstenmh she has got a georgeous voice as well! :)

  • I'm in love...

  • almost makes you want to believe in g-d's sweet grace once more. I believe heaven's missing its favourite angel tho.

  • Now this is music! I have listened to it maybe 6 times today and I love it!

  • This is proper music. I wish they'd play more music like this on national radio.

  • Couldn't agree more!!

Saw Kate last month at City Hall, Salisbury. Magnificent! The place was packed!

  • One of the best singers around today.

  • does she dye her hair blonde? may sound like a stupid question, but i know a few who's hair grows similarly.

  • Not as far I know

  • As a matter of fact, I could almost swear she is Sandy reincarnated.....the similarity is uncanny

  • I know that Sandy Denny, one of my favorites, would've loved Kate!! This is just simply beautiful....:)

  • Once the pipes kick in I get chills up my spine - Celtic music is beautiful and Kate's voice is perfection. I'm not a folk music man but I have become a fan of Kate Rusby.

  • "It's just a beautiful song, sung by a beautiful woman, with a beautiful voice."

    Cant argue with that!! Gorgeous.

  • Thanks :)

  • Thanks, Rusby08, for putting all these great songs up, with lyrics. Are you part of that great family enterprise, or a dedicated fan?

  • As a family, we're very big fans

So, we're not actually Rusbys, just as you put it very we;; 'Dedicated fans'

  • I count myself a dedicated fan.

    She's marvellous.

Saw her in Oxford, waited for an hour until she came out the back of the theatre, only to find that she had to get straight back on the road! Gutted!

  • what a voice. so,so beautiful.

  • One of the most beautiful song ever!! And Kate Rusby my biggest love!
