  • @stevefromPA2 You'll probably find there are sleepers under the tarmac to spread the weight.

  • The train actually runs on what is called a cantenary (that area above the air). If part of the 100 mile grid goes out, the whole line is impacted.

  • @bigzman34 Does anyone know what voltage this line uses?

  • @stevefromPA2 people ride the riverline from Trenton to Camden.

  • this is soo cool, a whole commuter train is just coastin down the street like a trolley.

  • @hummingbird19150 Amtrak has something similar as well on Coast Starlight. Near Emeryville.

  • Amtrak used to do this in Lafayette, IN, on 6th street. A Railroad Relocation project moved the tracks in the 1990's, but there are a couple of spots where the tracks are still visible. I remember coming out of the movie theater once and being greeted by a train in the street! : )

  • The freight trains stop at red lights :)

  • been running for years and years, these are newer cars tho.(live in South Bend.)....

  • Once the train gets out of Michigan City and onto straight track, it's top speed is 79 mph.

  • this is crazy a commuter train in the middle of the road!

  • wow..a huge "tram". interesting!

  • I rode that train one and Im telling you we stopped at every red light in Michigan city but once that train is in the country between South Bend and Michigan city it flies.

  • Never heard of a train having to stop at a red light before (At least a regular traffic signal).

  • The street running portion of the CSS&SB is required to stop at the red lights at Franklin, Washington and Wabash. The lights are synchronized so once the West bound train leaves the 11th Street station, all lights will be green. There is a preemption "trip" for Eastbound trains as they approach Wabash from about Easton. Once they clear that , they should have green all the way to the station.

  • I remember remember riding the old orange Rattler coaches back and forth to Notre Dame in the early 1960's. I was really freaked out when we rode down the middle of the street on that first ride.

  • Nice video! I love riding the "Shore"! if only we had something like this in Grand Rapids, MI... As far as I know, this is the last of the original interurbans. This is also the only place I know of where trains obey traffic lights! I rarely drive to Chicago; instead l prefer to drive to Michigan City and take the "Shore". It's faster, and you don't have to park in Chicago....

  • @HaIfFast Well we used to have a old horse drawn trolley system back 150 years ago if you count that as an interurban, an early one. (I live in Grandville)

  • good ol 11th street

  • Kyle, excellent work. Now if only we could work on time travel and go back and see the little Joes!

  • Cool, the last interurban.
