@Deface94 I'm no wrestling expert, but I have some idea. If you're getting guillotined alot, you're probably coming in with your back bent and your neck more stright forward than they ought to be. Notice how this guy's head is up high while he does this. Also, with the sprawl, if you catch them early you can lift under the hips and bring them into the air. If you're late, go up into a front body lock and shug their shoulders off and take their back.
@uno787 i always used to practice exact form with a blindfold on. Once you have the exact form down put an opponent in front of you and still do it blindfolded. Half of an unsuccessful shot is your fear of missing it then messing up the form. This way always worked to help get me ready for tournaments. Good luck to you
You guys even questioning this makes me laugh. I can't penetrate like that, I do it like this, he has no angle.... This shows why you are and always be mediocre wrestlers if you ever even reach that level. Or you may be you are in elementary school.
@punisher00109 figures a jiujitsu guy would find a double leg interesting.....whats so interesting about it?? Its probably the 1st move 6yr olds learn to wrestle lol.
@aKaMrAssassin IMO singles are easier to grab a hold of...but they're also easier to defend when someone's got a single on you...doubles are to get a hold of...but when you got the shoulder in the stomach and both hand on the knees and your knees between his legs...he's done
@racingmylife15 yeah knees between his legs...its kind of weird...because i learned the double like to make a step right between his legs with my foot and then drive my knee to the ground to offbalance my opponent....
but the guy at 0:17 puts his knee on the ground while hes far away from the legs and hits a really beautyfull double..so whats the correct version now:P?
Met Dan 3 times, first was after he won the Olympics. While assisting as U.S. coach at (Toledo's)1972 World Cup Tourney, he practiced for 30 min.'s with a State Champ. Gable took the guy down repeatedly, 15 times, without losing a point! He's the most conditioned wrestler ever in this country. A few others worldwide were a bit better. As a coach he recruited so many just with his name -and his skills -so that eventually he learned to be a top-notch coach as well, with 9 straight NCAA titles!
@NZSambo are you seriously trying to say you know better then dan gable? The guy did the double legs perfect. Im sure if he did it to you, it would be the quickest take down ever cause you suck ass at wrestling. As for everyone else saying these moves dont work, maybe its cause you suck. @SuperBlaze46 You're saying, Dan Gable, who has won all of his Highschool matches and never lost in his highschool years, and who was 2x NCAA champion and has only lost ONE match in college, and no one scored a SINGLE point on him in the olympics, is not a good coach? You must be retarded
@Greevo1 fucking blasphemy calling gable the best wrestler of all time... the best wrestler of all times by far and the best athlete ever in any sport is Alexander Karelin.
You don't strength to do it. I wrestled 112 and 103 this year and I'm pretty weak and I had an exhibition match against a 125 and double legged hi with this shot. You just have to know right angles.
I wrestled at 145 and 160 I quit after my sophomore year I wish that I would have stayed out. . . the double was go to shot that and a low single was my best means of scoring
@castlemeister lol....125's aren't known for their strength. You're right though, it's not all about strength. You will get farther with good technique found off of the grinding stone.
You don't strength to do it. I wrestled 112 and 103 this year and I'm pretty weak and I had an exhibition match against a 125 and double legged hi with this shot. You just have to know right angles.
you can never hit a double? work on your set-ups then, you probably aren't moving your opponent or your telegraphing your shot early. Close the space and make him step to you.
I went to dan gables intensive camp this summer and it was so worth the money. i learned alot and wrestling with the iowa wrestling helped me alot. any wrester even if not varsity should go
What is that man,really.. this is one of the best double leg takedowns i have ever seen!!!!!So nice, smooth and perfectly done!!!!!And so clear and perfect and easy explaining of it!!!!!This are videos that learn you A LOT!!!!!!Thx for it!!!!!Gr,
anyone that is out for varsity wrestling should go to dan gables wrestling camps. i learned a lot at them. learned from wrestling some of the university of iowa wrestlers for fun all through high school.
I have been using these double leg setups in practice and nobody can stop me. My favorite setups is the body fake. I wrestle my next tournament in Denver, Colorado for Who's Bad.
To clarify things, Bill Zadick was the 2006 World Champion. His brother Mike, wrestled in the 2008 Olympics.
Also, this is just one variation on a double. There are many different types of double technique. A double with the forehead penetrating through the opponents chest is a Japanese double, and it is effective as well when set up and eected properly. You never want your eyes looking down at the mat. eyes forward, forehead leading the way...
The reason the second takedown involved "cutting corners" was because the guy shooting screwed up and put his head to the wrong side. Head should be on the same side as the follow leg.
Won't work against a wrestler. You need penetration for a good double, or he's just gonna sprawl out of it, or maybe take double underhooks and drive you to your back. Head to chest works on a single because you're lifting the leg and snatching it back away from your opponent.
I guess you have not watched too much MMA then, seeing that the force of your head hitting their chest also drives them down. Another funny thing about the way I like the shot, they showed it that way at a Iowa wrestling camp I attended, yes one of Dan Gable's.
Watched plenty of MMA. I didn't say it wouldn't work... just that it wouldn't work against a wrestler. And I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that what you were shown at the Iowa Wrestling camp was a single leg, not a double. Just leaves you way too open to getting extended, or to double underhooks.
Okay. You were there; I wasn't. Can't argue with that, I guess. I will say that I train with some MMA fighters and I love it when they shoot this type of double on me. If they come in too low a hip-in nearly knocks em out; if not, you sprawl, sink in the double underhooks, and drive 'em back over their feet like a jacknife.
LOL, Dan Gable knows what he his talking about? No he does not! He only went 455-1, he does not know shit! LOL Dan Gable is the man and if you noticed I was being sarcastic! Who would critique Dan Gable? Idiots! LOL well said Ownage160
What in he// are people talking about? I was responding to ANOTHER POSTER who said HE didn't like the way the double shown in this video and preferred shooting with his head in his opponent's chest. My response was that the CORRECT way to shoot was how Dan Gable shows here. He replied that he'd been at a camp with Gable & been shown the other way. Fine. Maybe so. But I've NEVER seen Gable instructing anything like that. I trust my eyes more than some anonymous YouTube poster.
It doesnt really matter where you put your head. Commit with a setup, have good posture, cut the corner. As long as you move your head a bit to his side (not directly in the middle) so that you can drive sideways, it doesnt matter.
Trying to put your head "over" his back is your emphasis, but against good guys you'll end up with your head on the side or quite close to the stomach. Unless your doink a peekout or duckunder.
What you're saying is right, of course, except that the guy I was responding to wasn't talking about a solid double, with good posture, and a sideways thrust. He was specifically referring to an MMA style shot where you bend at the back instead of your knees, plant the top of your head into his chest with your eyes on the mat, and head-butt him forward while scooping his knees out from under him. I responded that this won't work against a good wrestler, and stand by that.
Sorry I didnt read the whole discussion between you and him :)
People are using that in mma because they can push the guy against the cage, but they bend at the back just to push the guy against the edge, then they drop their hips in, so hes not right at all. Maybe he was describing a blast double? A blast double is often done like what he says, but its because its not learnt properly.
instead of stepping with his lead leg for the penitration step, he's stepping back with his rear leg then taking the shot. Im used to stepping foward 1st then following through.
im a judo guy and i don't find this interesting

A blast double is often done like what he says, but its because its not learnt properly.

i think those are harder to pull off in pure wrestling.
in mma, its a much safer techinque, and it won't leave you sprawled under someone where you are going to get kneed in the head.
gsp pulled the blast doubles off on josh koscheck ncaa champion

instead of stepping with his lead leg for the penitration step, he's stepping back with his rear leg then taking the shot. Im used to stepping foward 1st then following through.

stepping back gives a better level change
stepping forward gives a better penetration

totally open for a guillotine..

Depends on where you land after the takedown. If your legs land on the opponent's side opposite of your head, you'll be fine.

Oh, i never did freestyle wrestling, just ameture were you get to points just for a take down.

When i wrestled, we learned a 4th step,
after we shoot, we turn the corner then finish.this way, you actually pick him up instead of driving him to the floor.
Ma094644 3 years ago
thats good for folkstyle where the only objective of a double leg is to take them down
in freestyle a double leg is used to take them down and expose the back if you can
that turns a 1 point take down to a 3 pointer
thats why you drive through them to take them to their back instead of just turning the corner

you do know theres back points in folkstyle right lol....
Rmor15k 3 years ago
yea but thats if you have control and you hold them there for near fall
freestyle you just have to expose the back and break a 90 degree plane for it to count as back points
