Inspiration of modern "hitman with a heart of gold" type of genre... Strange that they don't make movies of this type of genre instead hollywood only shit out faggot looking vampires. To see this type of movies, usually have to search in Europe or Asia.
I love the way Melville builds tension before the action. In many scenes of this type of genre, you'd usually have a different setup, with a huge gunfight at the end. Melville plays this in a subdued, poetic way.
Jesus....for a second there, I thought Alain Delon was looking into my soul like he was casing the joint so he could come back later and take what he wanted.
I still can't decide if I would have preferred the "alternate" ending: Jef dying with a big smile on his face.
Also, to KomarPower727: truer words were never spoken.
Just got this film in the mail off ebay today. Im halfway through viewing it taking a smoke/tea break and i must say im really enjoying it. Thanks again Criterion Collection!
I know I know how C.Bale is looking awesome since I saw a rising sun with his such a pretty voice in 1980s.yet I have seen the most beautiful man besides Alain Delon in my life.
Woah... If Batman retained its dark roots in the 70s, Alain Delon would be the perfect condenter (besides Clint Eastwood). Beefing up and martial arts training were a few adjustments (chuckle)- but those eyes... they speak in volumes.
To add, as much as I enjoyed Christian Bale as Bats (already the best so far) - I think Delon could've blow Bale away. He got the look and feel of an angel... with a death wish.
of course this scene was notibly referenced in submarine

@IndieKid90
Delon is more like a cross between Clint Eastwood and Jack Nicholson.
