It's weird- even though the last time this theme was heard was Super Bowl 32 in 1998, where the Broncos finally won; for some reason this theme conjures up memories of the devastating Jacksonville loss from the prior season for me lol.
Fox got rights to the NFC in 1993 and started airing in 1994. ABC still had a deal. CBS was the only major network that had no football until 1998 when they bought the AFC from NBC. THERE. Now it's solved.
@CutlerSUX6402 ... agreed, this theme combines an epic sensibility with nuance and finesse, plus something that evokes the wintry conditions that make for vintage football. But nowadays, everything supposedly needs to be "sexed up" with someone like Faith Hill.
If you can find it, could you upload it? And when was Bill Parcells humming this theme. Was it during an interview, a commercial he was in or during a game with the MIC on him?
NBC's coverage was underrated during the 80s and 90s. Only problem was they were the slowest and last network to integrate a scoreboard bug that stayed on the screen the entire game. Reminds me of Paul McGuire, Marv Albert, Joel Myers, Bob Trumpy, Sam Wyche just to name a few guys I wish that still called games.
@joisey82 This theme was definitely used until at least the 1997 season. NBC aired Super Bowl XXXII, which was during the 1997 season. Fox aired the following Super Bowl.
Good theme, but whenever I hear this, I get sad because it kinda has a sad feel to it because it has a finality to it. Just think about it, this was the last NFL on NBC theme before the AFC went to CBS. Now, with their new theme, it's like they're saying "WE'RE BACK!!!"
cbs lost thenfc rightsTO FOX on 1994, nbc didnt loose theirs till 2000, thats when cbs got the AFC TEAMS, NBC WOULD COME BACK ON 2006 AND GET THE SUNDAY NIGHT GAMES ALONG WITH THE SAT WILD CARD GAMES!
Yep, I remember it like it was yesterday. The Broncos beat the Packers and NBC ended the coverage of the Superbowl with the highlights (Terrell Davis, mile high salute) of the game with this theme. That was the last time this theme was played. I wish NBC would go back to it.
@e521soediv This theme was used from 1995 to 1997. NBC lost the AFC contract to CBS following the 1997 season. FOX had gained the NFC from CBS following the 1993 season.
@ayekooks86 yea man everything in da 90s was better, especially sports theme songs and major network songs. now they dnt give a shit all about the money
The song reflects class. Similar to the MLB theme from the mid to late 80's. NBC has alway's had the best sports musical pieces. I love this theme but the one from the late 70's into the early 80's is memorable.
Growing up i watched all of my sports on NBC particularly Football and Basketball, those two sports made the network back in the 90's when i was growing up if only they can bring basketball back i would be so happy lol
I thought I was the only one who thought of a DisneyWorld commercial when I heard this!
Ok, ok... decent piece of music but definitely NOT fit for TV football. Maybe baseball when NBC still had it. Maybe an NFL films production when the winning team runs off the field in slo-mo. But for a TV intro to get you jacked up for the noon game? (And up here in an NFC market I always seemed to get the AFC games that turned into 6-3 stinkers. No offense, AFC fans.) No, no, no.
It was a great theme for the NFL. The NFL is much about passion, emotion, excitement and drama. This theme certainly has an epic, exciting and dramatic feel to it.
And the theme they used has nothing to do with why they lost the NFL back in early 1998. The reason they lost the NFL was because they didn't want to have to pay the increasing rights fees when the new television contracts came up. CBS also wanted badly to get back into the NFL, and they were willing to pay a huge amount.
This is a fine theme, but it was ill-fitting for football. Especially when they would go to commercial and the "high" parts would come in ... it sounded like a Disney movie or something. Their new theme is much better for this setting.
I like it, it's good music, but it just doesn't scream "football" to me. This sounds more like what you'd play at the end of a sports movie where the high school or college team overcame the odds and won - this is what you play during the final dunk or the no-audio team and fan cheering and celebrating after the win. Football music for football's sake shouldn't be soaring, it should be pumping - it should hint at glory and combat more than character and satisfaction. Just my two cents.
Your two cents, and my two as well. Though I will say this a good piece of music overall, and would actually work great as a baseball theme. But I never thought this was a fit for a football broadcast.
I'm sort of sentimental towards this theme because it's the "NFL on NBC" theme (the old, AFC version) that I remember the most. It was also the last one that they used before CBS replaced them as the AFC broadcaster in 1998. When NBC got the "Sunday Night Football" package, I was hoping that they would bring this theme back (for pure nostalgia and continuity reasons). But, they decided to go in a completely new direction.
I had always wondered had NBC gotten the Sunday Afternoon AFC or NFC television package when they got back into the NFL T.V. business in 2006 if they would have bought this theme back? Of course we will never really know, but my guess would have been yes.
I wonder if they decided to go in a completely new direction because it was Sunday Night Football national broadcasts as opposed to Sunday Afternoon AFC or NFC regional/national broadcasts.
Great song, I agree. I can hear the similarities between this, my local NBC news open/close, and good morning america open (when i watched the first few minutes of it like 2 years ago, donno if its changed)
yes NBC and CBS should have the sunday games and MNF should go back on ABC again like it used to be. FOX is ok but sometimes there coverage and thier broadcasting just gets "cheesy" and it starts to become more of a big joke of a broadcast instead of calling the action play-by-play.They need to quit all of those comedy gigs and choose whether are you a "serious" broadcast or a more "comedic" broadcast just for the "entertainment" factor.
NBC should use this for their NFL games again. The current one is too much like Star Wars.
