@nirdtron its an old Scottish folk tune written by "anonymous" There are versions were the beloved is a man, as in this version, and others where the beloved is a woman.
@brownkevi lol this song was around way before that guy,its surfaced in apppalachian region of America in 1915, author is unkwown but said to be passed on orally from scotland most likely
The character Ledger played could have been the twin brother to my partner of seventeen years. If i close my eyes and listen to him, it is like having Bill back. They are both gone now. We were about as different as night and day, like the two in the movie. I miss him. A beautiful song to apply to this sequence of the movie-wonderful resonant voice.
excellent - shame you didnt use the original Christ Moore song - the original singer of it - his haunting music would have been more appropriate I reckon.
The song is hundreds of years old, and the lyrics and arrangement in this rendition of it are American modifications of the original Scottish version. It was brought to America by the Scoth-Irish in the 18th Century, and they improved it over the course of many generations. Of course, Nina Simone gives it her own flair here.
Music is splendid but doesn't fit in. Movie is a crap anyway. I don't understand the world. There has been Jarman, Pasolini and many others why this stale cowboy sentimentality, pathetic stuff.

It's funny, because I've been working on a script with a story similar to Brokeback Mountain and I listen to this song for inspiration.

Brilliant moving movie

smoothtom9, Christy Moore isn't the original singer of the song. It was a guy from Glasgow and Christy moore just asked to use it!

Actually I'm pretty sure this is an old scottish folk song with the original singers name long lost.

i think you'l find its a really old irish folk song, not scottish, although its prety easy to mix the two up
ronandelargy101 4 years ago
its probably a bit of both, it mentions the clyde though a river in scotland
phillynottjr 4 years ago
I heard it was a Scottish balad too, but I'm not here to argue. Something to research indeed.
