OK answering question re bathroom: I'm pretty sure that they have a separate area for the toilet and sink that's not located near the baths. Japanese believe that the toilet is the unclean area of the house, so they have "toilet slippers" for people. It's often a common faux pas that those unfamiliar with the concept of toilet slippers wear said slipppers outside the toilet.

I think that was the baths, not the toilet. Like a hot spring. Tradtional Japanese inns usually have a place for baths (for women too).

Once I was in a hotel in Japan and there was only a hot spring for men...that I saw anyway. I don't know why but it was kind of a bummer because hot springs are nice.
