The refine edge tool is a little fidly. It is a balance between Feather, Contract / Expand, and smooth.too much feather and it looks like nothing is selected. Another way is to do the selection part, invert selection then hit create mask button. the advantage of this is that you can adjust the area you are 'hiding' and more easily correct it to what you want as the original picture is not damaged.
