Well they're choosing a candidate, not a leader, Howard Dean is the 'leader' of the Democrats. I agree though, it's a weird system, kind of defeats the purpose of letting the public vote on it. In Canada, the leader of a party is automatically the candidate, and he/she is chosen by the party he/she is representing. I suppose both systems have their ups and downs, but personally I prefer the American style election.
