  • Great band

  • i seen them as a kid and didn't know they were big in the 80's best band at the all day concert i was tryin to tell my dad how good they were and he told me he had seen them like 5 times i felt like an idiot lmao been a fan ever since

  • ...If you start me up I'll never stop... woops wrong song! P lol

  • They were brilliant then and they've just got better and better over the years. Completely undervalued by the British music industry.

  • Who is that drummer?

  • the riff that just wont quit

  • Great song, great band.

  • ah the gretsch has been replaced with the les paul. Great band, great track happy memories : )

  • Astbury is flawless on here.

  • damn, charlie sheen can shred!

  • greatest cult song behind firewoman

  • 5 people have had their love removed by a machine

  • the classic of the classics.

  • Rolling Stone`s"Start me Up" guitar riff?

  • I think the guitarist left and after that they lost their "Sound"

  • @horseboyken he never left^^

  • @horseboyken Nah, Ian and Billy are the only two original members around.

  • Damn Ian Astbury looks FINE! Amazing song!

  • The Cult.....

  • @ ericinhawaii, in the mid to late eighties they were huge in the UK, you couldn't go to a rock/metal/alternative club and not hear one of their songs, or see a multitude of people trying to look like Astbury. Maybe they didn't break totally into mainstream culture, but is that a bad thing? U2 did, and they are shite.

  • Ladies and gentlemen, not THIS is rock!

Play it loud, hard, and fast.

  • Great tone and excellent phrasing on some standard licks that Billy applies his own twist on. nice arrangment of guitar parts. kickass rock tune!

  • Wish I would have gone to see this band in the 80's and 90's. Maybe they will go on tour again. A truly under rated band. Ian Astbury is amazing!!!!

  • These guys must have had shitty management. Why they didn't become extremely well known is beyond me. Does anyone know why ? This CD has been in my car for many years...

  • @erikinhawaii Well Guns N Roses popped out of nowhere, kind of. They also toured together. Cult is kinda big but they made music that fit well into the late 70's ya know...

  • @konkelberryfinn yea i hear you. Did you like the Love CD ?

  • Wish they'd bring this show back with all the old bands as well

  • so damn awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • The drummer kicks azzz.... i wonder why they traded him for sorum?

  • @flippyflyer Ian and Duff are the core while bassists and drummers have come and gone....sorta like Spinal Tap's drummers xD

  • @SDfreakazoid i know but the rhythym section on the Electric album was amazing....just curious

  • great great great!....easy top ten all time

  • that is my favorite song by far

  • Great song, great lack of personality also

  • These guys look and play like rock stars are suppose to.

  • This song always sends a shiver down my back...fantastic

  • best performance of this song in terms of accuracy! he can sing this way live when he wants to i think.

  • That's how it's done.

  • BADASS !!

  • Saw The Cult open up for Billy Idol in '87. They rocked hard. Got to meet Billy Duffy the next morning at the local Denny's while scarfing down some pancakes. He was cool enough to sign my ticket stub. Looking forward to the Cult show in a few weeks at a local club.

  • @orionmme Thx dude. That's the funny part..I'm not even sure what they played? We walked in a tad late and Guns was already on stage, and man they were they ROCKIN! Axle had his hair all moused up, it was crazy. Plus the first album had only been out a few weeks...we had never even heard of them..?? The only song I kind of remember is Mr. Brownstone. Then I saw them on Lose your illusion and they SUCKED!!! It was a fast decline....

Oh, and the CULT was even better than Guns..!

    Rock on Bro!

  • the best combo, gibson les paul and marshall. just epic-awesome-ness.

  • @henningelana

Duffy usually plays a Gretsche White Falcon,

the original recording was done on a Gretsche....

but there's nothing wrong with a Gibson either....

  • @lokalzrule Actually, the Electric album was primarily recorded with a borrowed Les Paul at the insistence of Rick Rubin. Duffy only used the Gretsch on certain tracks, such as the solo on Born To Be Wild. Since the later part of the electric era he has used Les Pauls as much as the Gretsch, more so on albums like Sonic Temple and Beyond Good And Evil, although he has used the Gretsch quite a bit in recent years, for the Love anniversary etc.

  • not used to be they still are Ian is a god

  • I saw this tour in Detroit and an unknown named Guns And Roses was the opening act. To this day it's one of the better shows I ever saw.....

  • @stingray1964

Sweet! I saw the afore mentioned "unknown band named Guns n Roses" open for Motley Crue in 87. Went there thinking I was a Motley Crue fan, but left hating them. GnR blew their asses offstage. Quite a lot for a young teen's eyes to take in, but even in my rock infancy, it couldn't have been more obvious.

  • @TheDreamMechanic Nice..!! I think back then GnR was blowing away every band they encountered! They were really good on that first tour, then stardom kicked in. Did you see them a second time...? I did a few years later, they were headlining...they were pretty mediocre by then, the thrill was gone....maybe it was me..??

    Rock on bro thx!

  • @stingray1964 yeah I know exactly what u said G'n R was opening for Aerosmith they just got kicked off David Lee Roth's Skyscraper tour for blowing his band off the stage every night, DLR cant have that (it's all about him you know) so they went to Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation and Faster Pussycat went with DLR and all was good till the 1991 tours Axl going on stage 3 hours late the venue's paying union overtime it got really expensive

  • @horseboyken Haha...yeah Dave had nothing to worry about with Faster Pussy Cat on the bill I'm sure. Man, GnR was SO good the first time I saw them, then a few years later I saw them headlining and all the ROCK star shit had kicked in and they sucked! If you wanna read some funny shit, get Sammy Hagar's new book. He's talks some serious smack about Diamond Dave!

    Rock on bro!

  • YEEAAAYAAAAH!!! They dropped the paisley scarves & bangles, got Rick Rubin to boil down the sound to an AC/DC level and they grew a set of 'nads.Result = Rock and Roll!!! Duffy discovered the Les Paul and guitar solos, who cares if he ripped off a load of Keith Richard riffs, they sounded great! I hope The Cult do an Electric tour to follow up the awesome Love Tour from last year. I love this vid!

  • @mindwarp666 yeah and who cared that Keith ripped off all the blues riffs!

  • Duffy doesn't look right without his Gretsch White Falcon

  • this is got a hook and bad riffs that are simple and catchy. great job you limey basterds. you rock !

  • wow

  • The best british song of the late 80's.........Such an amazing riff......

  • baby baby baby babyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • Mediocre

  • @unclelight yes, your troll is weak, we al lagree. The Cult, however, fucking awesome.

    Thanks for the upload!

  • Didn't even know this song/band existed until Guitar Hero... Shame on me and boy did I miss out.

  • where's Billy's white falcon?

  • Baby x3 "I fell from the sky" look past the noiz=Zion

  • Gadfukindam..........This is Rock!!!

  • Damn, they were rockin' out so hard it was almost dangerous! What a performance of a kick-ass track. Very cool. Cheers!

  • This was the first time I heard this song...remember exactly when and where!

  • Love The Cult! Just bought Pure Cult album!

  • brilliant song

  • The Cult kicks complete ass . No debate .

This live performance sounds just like the studio one though . Which is probably a good thing , but I just found it funny .

  • Greatest ever...wish it was 87 all over again!!

  • Love the song but what the fuck is a love removal machine. I always picture a large device used for penile/clitoris amputation and I can help but wince during the chorus.

  • Debut of this song...remember watching it in my boyfriends bedroom.

  • this be marvellous.

  • so awesome it hurts.

the cult used to be the best rock band to come out of the 80s. there is no debate.

  • I concur

  • @meetismurder hmmm right bag of shite g n r wank over their flabby english tits

  • @outtacastatv . . . at least Astbury would be on stage on time, which is way more than you can say for Axl Rose, you fucktard cockhead !!!

  • @outtacastatv . . . we're both Z-Boys fans . . . oh well, can't have everything

  • @meetismurder yes pibe the cult es de culto...magnìfik...abrazos desde argentina...pìnto y me voy...

  • @meetismurder until guns n' roses came along

  • if this dont make your balls swell and make you want to fuck the slut sitting next to you in the boozer, then maybe you are in the wrong pub!!

LOVE REMOVAL MACHINE ........BOLLOCKS!!!...THE CULT RULE

  • Do these guy's rock or what?? this cut should ALWAYS be played on 11!

  • (talk about love) Love Removal Mishh-HANE (talk about love) Love Removal Mishh-HANE !

  • This is the first vid I've seen with Nigel Preston (RIP) doing background vocals. Love Nigel and the Cult!

  • The drummer is Les Warner,NOT Nigel Preston.

He'd left The Cult in 1985.

    This is from march 1987.

  • The drums on electric sounded monsterous its weird hearing it here with the drums so low they sound really tight though

  • true - how good does Ian sound though! perhaps one of the most underated bands for a long time...

  • Greatest Cult line-up!

Jamie laying down the fat bass

    Les anchoring it all

    Ian on vocals

and Billy burning it up like a motherfucker...!

    Fuck yeah!

  • Perfeito

  • the cult rocks, fuck yes. they sound great live

  • Comment removed

  • Bad Assssssssssss!

  • Billy is playing a Les Paul here. ...sort of rare

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • a lot of billy's riffs sound like Kirk Brandons from his time in Theatre of hate, drums are similar too

  • Comment removed

  • Of course, it's an hommage!

I've played both songs with different cover bands, and if it's important there is one or another sus or seven difference... ;)

  • the song is great man and even better than the rolling stone song lol but it was stolen, just a shame on a good song like this.

  • does it really fucking matter!,they admitted they stole it from the stones, they wasnt hiding the fact was they!!.the song rocks, and so does everything by them!!!!!!!!!!

  • MrAlansheldon no using a good riff and then make it ur own song is ok.....

  • who gives a fuck. The Rolling Stones play the blues. Half of there songs have already been done a thousand times by guys who live in New Orleans. Only so many frets on a guitar.

  • i do, i dont like stolen compositions

  • the intro sounded like a song from rolling stones..

  • yea the intro sounds like start me up....

  • start me up riff from the stones is used here

  • one of the best songs ever

  • Love the solo, and pretty sweet beat too.

    5 stars :D

  • Sick solo, feel like commenting on it each time i check this vid

  • One of the best songs ever and one of the best guitar solos ever !!!

  • i think a lot of judging a good riff is all about how it makes you feel, which is kind of subjective.

take your list for example, each on of those guys are amazing guitar players but not one of those riffs you've listed can make the hair on the back of my neck stand up like the riff from Love Removal Machine can and Love Removal Machine doesn't have half the effect that She Sells Sanctuary has.

so yeah, subjectively id choose the cult over any on your list.

    not trollin', just saying

  • there doing love tour now

  • So damm good !!!

  • awesome title with Start Me Up intro ...

  • they have good taste, really shakin!!!!

    ...thanks Ssssstones for sharing this

  • wrong. this is a good song.

  • are the cult still together last i hear the lead sinnger was in the doors

  • Comment removed

  • another berrnie madoff boyband sucsess

  • Wow, you are wonderfully stupid

  • Obviously I was joking dude!

  • Hell Yeah!, Bedee, bedee, that's rock n' roll folks. The break is a little weak in that it brings down the tempo and temporarily stalls the song, it sounds better done live though. Billy saves himself by kicking it up a notch for the double-tempo finish. Ian does his best to swallow the mic. Watch out you'll hurt the pipes ;o)

  • Great voice, amazing singer !!!

  • Billy Duffy!

  • 5 stars

    great quality

  • does'nt the singer sound like the singer fromm molly hatchet?

  • yes!

  • Ian is so powerful... the way he stomps around with his walk (even though he doesnt walk much in this one) and the way he just belts out the song...

  • OMG!!

i LOVE the drummer, Les Warner!

    AHH...HES SO CUTE!!

  • that ruleoforder guy is a right sad act.

I bet ive checked out about 20 music videos by totally different bands the last 2 weeks. and he has posted that comment on all of them.

    You sad cunt.

  • Is it just me or does the riff in this song remind you of "Start me up" by the Rolling Stones?

  • Duffy always has magic hair

  • longlive the real rocknroll !!!!!!!

  • "Unique" style but wicked music.

  • It´s gold..perfect!!

  • wow that was perfect, he want lip syncing right

  • Wonderful live version of a perfect rock anthem. Love many Cult songs, but, MetallicBill, I tend to agree with you.

  • This song is a blue print, basically, The solo, the total rocking out in it! haha

  • You are exactly right.

  • By far their best work. I don't know why they couldn't repeat the formula! I like this head and shoulders above the other songs

  • "By far their best work. I don't know why they couldn't repeat the formula!" - Metallic

Their follow up Sonic Temple wasn`t too bad. It was a decent album with some major hits. Guess Duffy ran outta riffs to rip.

  • In all honesty, I say that, this song is great, beginning to end, and I was never really a fan outside of it...to be honest

  • "I was never really a fan outside of it...to be honest" - Metal

    Here`s to honesty!!! : )

  • Well, I am honestly a music lover, of many types, I just feel they nailed it here and somehow opted not to try replicating the formula, and I think one could exploit the same elements on display in this song. I wish there was a band like UFO around today, I should say, the classic 70s and early 1980s...bucking any current trends

  • Sonic Temple is the best Cult Album in my opinion.

  • i like that album but i think electric is better

  • gold

  • No.... Sunburst! haha LP that is

  • i love how live his voice still sounds MOTHER FCKING PERFECT!

  • I Have dug on the cult since Love Removal machine. I am A Native American and can only offer my apologies for the Sad Deal on the young native pay off. I have Loved The Band and the music since the early eighties,Thank you Sir and Never Stop.

  • aphrodisiac jacket was my fave on that album. at the time i thought they were straying too far from the goth stuff into rock.

  • For those talking about his voice going, I met the guy and drank with him for a couple hours in DC after the Holy Barbarians sets. He's a guy who really wants to please fans, badly. He sings his voice out simple as that. He's got the rock star vibe going like Robert Plant. Very smart guy and patient with the blitzed state we were in. He loves the fan connection big time. These guys are the "missing link" band that carried us from New Wave crap in the 80's to Curt Cobain.

  • I meant Kurt Cobain... All the great Seattle "grunge" bands listened to The Cult. Where do you think Cobain got his hatred of fame... from Ian. Ian told me he burned all of his platinum records and all awards when the Cult broke up before Holy Barbarians. Total Trip.

  • The Cult is gonna find more love thanks to the Guitar Hero World Tour Machine

  • you mean this guy is "fan friendly" ?

  • Oui. He is fan friendly, but he really likes intellectually stimulating conversation at a deep level. We were pretty hammered and it wasn't working. He was cool though. My buddy was really getting in his face over breaking up the Cult and we had to calm our friend down. Ian tried to explain and be patient.

  • Great story, hierge. I was at that 9:30 Club show, too, and have always remembered it well.

  • Put on the The Cult's 'Electric' and feel like a million bucks.

Billy Duffy's Gibson/Marshall sound is fantastic.

  • SHITE!! I haven't heard this song for so fukin longgg! Thanks for posting!!

  • get ready to play it on guitar hero world tour !!!!!

  • Is this the same programme as the Old Grey Whistle Test hosted by Bob Harris?

  • Pretty sure it isn't. I bought the boxset and the stage never looked like that... and this would have been on it too.

  • What do you think happened to his voice? Drugs,Drinking or did he damage it...

    He does sound good here.

  • This is the last live perfomance they ever did where Ians voice still cuts it live, all the early and Love period live stuff is awesome vocally, but Electric onwards his voice was shot, still a great frontman though.

  • Classic!

  • What do you mean? They were very talented musicians with a varied and diverse sound, both on record and live.

  • correction they are very talented musicians

  • I didn't question their talent as musicians, that they were talented is obvious, but Astbury's voice did decline as the 80's and drug/drink excess wore on,its without question.

  • Yeah!

  • That's Andy Kershaw waiting to present - poor man, is he better yet?

  • Badass live performance of a badass song. Great clip.

  • does anyone have a DVD or some other copy of this show ?
