It's interesting, in real life these men got into a fist fight over politics (Henry won) yet they still remained the best of friends and here in this movie they are representing their true political believes

A reference to their real life political views. They were reportedly best friends, but shared different political views. James Stewart was a solid conservative Republican, whilst Henry Fonda was a very liberal Democrat

It should be mentioned that the Republican and Democratic parties of the time period presented, bear little or no resemblance to the parties of today. They might as well be arguing about Martians VS Venusians for all the reference it has to our political world today. Enjoy the acting but ballyhoo to the partisanship.
