And many states (Texas, for example) joined the union with only with the understanding that they could withdraw from the union later, if they wanted to. And since all states have equal rights under the U.S. constitution, EVERY STATE HAS THE RIGHT TO SUCCEED!

I believe the 500 billion tax dollars we spend on the interest of the national debt is Ron Pauls point. Not the gold standard. It's hardly laughable. I believe it is far more rational to live within your means.

If that's his point, he's throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Being free from the gold standard enables flexibility that when used responsibly, makes us better off. A simpler solution than handcuffing our treasury is just electing Democrats, who have a proven ability to balance the budget and run a surplus.

I agree. I would prefer that he would talk about balanced budgets rather than the gold standard, but that's his way of saying if we do this it would force congress to balance the budget. Since the federal government has shown lack of restraint when it comes to using the federal bank.

But remeber most of those Clinton years with balanced budgets were with a Republican majority in the house. The president doesn't balance the budget. Congress does.

The Clinton balanced budgets were mainly attributable to the tax increase in his first two years with a Democratic Congress that 1) not a single Republican voted for 2) gave us the only budget surpluses in my lifetime and 3) led to the 90s' prosperity by allowing low interest rates because the government wasn't crowding out the market for money.
