  • OMG WOW how cool it that u were onn tv heheheheehehe oops lol (onn)Ur such my inspiration ..!!

  • Hey lady! I finally got around to watching the documentary, it was really..........complex lol.

i need way more than 500characters to properly describe me reactions to it...but anyways you were really good and well-spoken as always^^

the only thing i didn't like was the HOST! he was SO irritating!!

    love^^

  • lol you are silly!

  • I posted the article in my Facebook and told people to read it for the sake of eating disorder awareness and I mentioned your YouTube name. I didn't get to see the news story, because I don't have cable- did it miss the mark a lot? Was it a good experience for you?

  • You can watch it online my dear - just got to the link provided in my latest post on it, or the one hear and find the video clips, part 1 and 2

    Thank you for your support

  • I'm so sorry that your show on 20/20 became so twisted. I really don't think that some people understand. Maybe you should make your own show. You know enough people that you could get together with I'm sure. You know you could air what needs to be know about ed with the help of a few others that you know. It's not slap stick comedy ! :) I think you know what I mean by that statement. Ballerina princess... You know how it needs to be done. Sending hugs your way ! :) Mamie

  • Hey Johnny!

I just watched the video and saying that they "missed the mark" is nothing less than an understatement. I was very disappointed and wholeheartedly agree that a ridiculous amount of focus was placed on the food and the consumption of food. I'm sorry, but wtf? This disease should NEVER be treated lightly, or as the equivalent of some minor illness that can be treated with minor effort. It's just as real, urgent, and painful as the message of those affected.

  • Little mention of the obsession, fear, anxiety, distress, pain, heartache of those battling orthorexia made it even more disappointing. Maybe the production team should have included someone who understood the battle as more than a illness, but as something more human?!? Seriously, though, I'm so annoyed. Can we contact ABC in a more direct way expressing concern over their portrayal?

  • I'll stop commenting now, but wanted to make my feelings somewhat heard.

Hope your day is going well, my sweet Johnny!

    Lauren

  • Hey, Johnny! I watched 20/20 but wasn't able to comment until now. WOW! I was really surprised to learn so much. And as I recall, the orthorexia voice was especially loud during filming, but your spirit shined through. :) I'm sending the videos to my mother.

    Catherine

  • I saw your video in reaction to the 20/20 show. And what I really admired about you in that video, is the fact that you want to help and understand people who have eating disorders. Do you realize that you would be a revolutionary if you opened a clinic that had all natural and healthy food. You would be so famous. And you would actually help people with eating disorders instead of just serving food, you would serve love!

  • I am very very very flattered by this comment and your gratitude towards who I am and what I am doing. Thank you, ever so much. I would love to see clinics like that happen, geared towards eds. I'd love to be a part of that but first I must get myself healthy. A figure who isn't as healthy as he can be isn't the figure he could be if he were healthy. Smile.

  • I was confused at the point of the documentary, because it showed that raw food was a bad thing. That raw food eating was a bad thing. What about the meanings behind the obsessive health food eating? That one lady just showed how she pretty much stopped her obsessive attitudes. I dont blame the food for that. We all need food, but this documentary was focused only on the food.

  • Media, go figure. My thoughts on this are in my newest video... You are not alone in feeling this way. Many people are very upset over how they linked raw food and a psychological illness together, I am one of those people and have already publically addressed my opinion - here, on a raw food forum and on ABC's website.

  • if anyone has any problems finding the programme...torbenmiller has it here on YT...first 2 parts are about missing child Caylee Anthony the rest is about orthorexia.

Welldone Johnny, very proud of you, hope you are proud of yourself...you showed great courage!

  • THank you so much!!! and thanks for posting this - I saved to favorites!

  • Darn, I just saw this, so I missed the documentary! But I did go to the link an watch the 7 minute recap of the show. You did great!

  • 7 minute? there are 2 parts

its 14 minutes total... u missed part 2

  • Oh, I didn't see that. I will go back and look. Thanks,

    Tara

  • Thanks, I found the second part. I love the statement at the end " We don't get to pick how we die, we only get to pick how we live" That is one thing that has been true for me in recovery. I was not living with my ED, I was dying with it in more ways than one. Now, even though I still struggle and I am living more, it is great!

  • Saw the show. Thank you for your vulnerability. I really recognize myself in you. I almost died 5 years ago from orthorexic-related issues. It was a spiritual crisis that led me to some intensive healing work with some crazy yogis. I am still a control freak but have come a lonnng way! I am here if you would like to connect, can't post my contact info here but hopefully if you want you can send me a private message through this site.

    Love,

    Uma

  • hey johnny, im sure you've been inundated w responses re the documentary, but I wanted to congratulate you... it took a lot of courage to share your story, and I'm proud of you!!!

I am curious, however, as to your reaction to the segment's biased portrayl of raw food... As stossel portrayed it, raw food *qua* orthorexia. As someone who's found strength & vitality thru raw, what are your thoughts on this? And how to you draw the line b/t "healthy" raw & orthorexia?

  • you looked so good on tv- and what you said was GREAT! good job :)

  • I just watched it. Too bad it wasnt' longer but obviously they need to go by time frames etc I understand. I think you and the others involved got important info. out. Just think of all the lives you are touching by agreeing to be on the show like that. I felt special to know "of" you on there and I recognized many things via watching your vids on here. I was sitting back thinking "Oh there's Johnny in his garden at his mom's house" I know Johnny...well not really but sure others felt same :)

  • your body is so cute, you look just like supermodel olgas sherer, have you heard of her? your body reminds me of her

  • I understand you are trying to compliment me here but I must step in and say ... Oh my, if her body looks like mine then I really hope she comes to get some help as I am living in a very unhealthy body due to past malnutrition abuse and damage from EDs, as well as a current bmi that is TOO low. I am trying to gain weight, it's a mental challenge. I have the dietary lifestyle to do it, I know how and I am trying but it must be done slowly for mental and physical/physiological reasons...

  • yes, i know. but i gotta say, you're beautiful inside and out

  • i watched it

    your so lovely

  • I just watched it on the website - it was so good, really informative and you came across really well xxxx

  • I missed it the ONE day I was sick and couldnt even look at the computer screen. Damn, I missed it. Hope we can catch it somewhere.

  • its on their website, follow the link in my info box, it's at the bottom of the page, part 1 and 2

  • dammit ive been waiting to see this since august, and i totally missed it last night. Is there any way you can upload it to you tube or pt a linkage for it in the box to the right???

  • its on their website, follow the link in my info box, it's at the bottom of the page, part 1 and 2

  • theres a link in the box on the right:)!

  • I missed the television airing but I caught it on the website!

  • I just watched your segment on the 20/20 website (we don't get ABC here in England but luckerly its on the net) I thought you came across really well as did the other lady on there. Although they did spend a lot of time attaching that old bloke (cant remember his name), i think it has alerted more people to the dangers of extreme "healthy" eating and that can only be a good thing.

its not always easy to bare your soul and you have so much courage!:)

PS loving the heart shaped bowl! :)

  • Thank you so much but I cant find it. Can you please send met he link??? i dont know why it isnt showing for me???

  • I found it at the bottom of the page, didn't see it!!! Great, going to go rewatch it on my laptop now. BIG HUGS

  • Do you know if they will re-air it? I watched the show last night. I feel they spent too much time attacking the raw foodists and not enough time on suffers emotions/feelings/minds. They just kept showing fruits and veggies for affect. Like zooming in on greens like their poison or something. Clearly they didn't quite grasp the concept of orthorexia taking over ones mind. I did like how they distinguished it being completely different than anorexia nervosa. Your brave babe.

  • I feel the same way, my thoughts are posted on the public comment forum for the article. You can see more of them there. I doubt they will reair it, a follow up though? maybe? I hope this will land me more media coverage as I have a lot more to say.

  • Yes, you said that verywell. Although I'm not raw, I didn't like how they treated the raw food people. I don't believe in being judgemental about anyone's food choices or any aspect of their life, and I try not to be judgemental. What I like about Johnny is that he's a very open-minded person. I'd have liked to see more of the psychology about it. I have had thoughts get stuck in my mind, but not related to food. It's a bad feeling. Johnny & the other recovering orthorexic were very intelligent.

  • Johnny, I write more later, but you were great and very articulate. I am hugely proud to say that you are my friend.

    xoxo

  • yhea i saw it, it was pretty good.

  • Well done Johnny! I couldn't see a link to the video on the website. OK, so I have a question.. Is orthorexia nervosa a truly distinct illness/behaviour? I wonder whether people develop it without any prior history of anorexia/bulimia nervosa or OCD? People are often helped out of anorexia by switching their pre-occupation to different rituals that involve control (of the body, mind and mood). But the written storyline gives the impression that orthorexia develops discretely to other EDs...

  • Tigster... I wrote a six or seven page document on Orthorexia Nervosa, Please go read it - it's on my website. It will help you understand more ... from my prosprective and experience. It's personal and also theory based, as well as medical oriented. I'm in the process of trying to publish it.

  • Great - I'll go read it!

  • Did you read it? I got no feedback what so ever... ?

  • I have just read your document... I am unwell at the mo and spent most of Saturday in bed asleep. (Some nasty infection - and I feel low mentally - possibly consequential).

I think it's VERY good - and well worth publishing. I have some queries/comments which I'll send to you in a private message.

    Tiggster xxxx

  • Hi hon,

That came out great. Yes, they definitely gave raw foodism a bad rap, and Kulvinskas too. I don't know anything about him. I just sent a pretty detailed email to you.

    xoxoxoM

  • Johnny I am glad you shared your story. However they(20/) made it seem like you going RAW gave you orthorexia. For those of us fighting to give RAW a good name this report could be seen as damging. It lumped Raw & Orthorexia together. I know your an advocate of RAW for those of us with an ED past. How do you think the report came across? As some one who is eating RAW I would not want anyone to see that report. Much love FG31

  • I didn't do that, that other guy gave bad a raw idea. I am a big advocate of how raw has helped me in my recovery and served as a balance. It's beyond my control what those chose to air, that's how I feel. Of course they used raw references from many people but then again aren't they ones who follow SAD and may never know the spiritual and nutritonal journey of raw? that's my two sense. We are living different lives, there will be different views. I think you know what I mean.

  • How do you feel about this statement of mine: The opposing point of view does not and could not understand a raw point of view - therefore - without personal experience, one might attack RAW. I do NOT feel it's orthorexic of me to say raw is the healthiest lifestyle. However, I do not feel that it works for everyone or maybe most people aren't willing to work for it. I have seen more GOOD experiences with it than bad adn the bad talk about it has been from SAD lifestylers... go figure right?

  • I am not one of the raw foodists to go preaching guru style. As a figure in the ED community I am FORCED to keep my orthorexic thoughts under control when interacting with others as it could HINDER them not HELP. I must learn to continue to ACCEPT MY OWN FOOD MORALS and figure out what is orthorexic for me and what is not. It's all an individual thing. Have you read my piece on orthorexia? If not, please do. I want your feed back, you specifically.

  • Ps. The document emphasized too much on food when the disease is about the ATTITUDE and MENTALITY around food, not the food itself. I'll link you to my banter of thoughts about this on a RAW FOOD FORUM/site I am part of but I won't get into it here because it might discourage people who aren't RAW and I wouldn't want that to hinder anyone's recovery. PM me if you'd like me to link you to the post... HUGS. Will you be going to the RAW spirit festival?

  • I love your website. I went through the whole thing. Yes I read your piece and really admire everything your doing for ED understanding for the masses. I will Pm you for that link. I wont be at the festival... I WISH! I will be starting a Juice Feast today I hope to go 100 days! MUCH love 2 you!

  • i'll have to wait until it finishes showing and watch it online because it just started here right after i logged on and saw that it was airing tonight.

  • CRAP I missed it.

  • It's on the website... you can watch it online, part 1 and 2

  • F WORD!!!!! I MISSED IT!!!!! IM GOING TO WATCH IT ONLINE...can i see it now???

  • It's on the website... you can watch it online, part 1 and 2

  • This is so weird. I was just thinking today when I was walking my dogs that I thought tonight would be a good night for it to air and voila....it's airing tonight. Can't wait!

  • Hey Johnny, I was so happy to see you on TV just now! You sounded very intelligent. Ideally, neither food nor any other aspect of a person's life would cause them a great deal of stress.

  • that was great! i wish you the best of luck in finding the peace you are so desperatly searching for...hugs

  • Johnny you did a great job!

    -Linds

  • You did an awesome job. Your videos give an absolutely vital message. As a college educator, I greatly appreciate and admire the advice and wisdom you share about your experiences.

  • OMG I SAW YOUU. But they only said you were orthorexic. they didn't talk about your other eating disorders..

  • Yes, I am fully aware of that and that is for a VERY good reason. Orthorexia is not anorexia or bulimia. People are ignorant. They will associate these 2 diseases to orthorexia and get CONFUSED. I told ABC I would NOT go on national news if they did not MENTION I had other eds. They kept the document on the topic matter that was meant to be documented: orthorexia. I am glad they did not include other eds as it would of distracted and confused people. They did mention I have other eds though.

  • im watching you right now!

    (:

  • of course ill watch.

    i cant wait!

  • Cool, I will definitely be watching. Does it matter if you are in a different time zone because on the website it says it will be shown at 10 PM ET.

  • I'll be watching it tonight!!!

    Can't wait to see it!

  • im watching and supporting you! :)

  • Hi Johnny!

  • Oh Good Johnny! I can hardly wait to watch.
