When I hear about the "impersonal," it reminds me of the socially arid environments of most churches and spiritual orgs now, East and West, which seem to follow society's general trends toward more and more alienation and even social fear. If a group can't provide me with a dynamic community of friends and lots of interesting interaction, which are main traditional functions of spiritual orgs, I see no point in being with them. I'm perfectly able to practice yoga at home.

You've misunderstood "impersonal." Don't feel badly. Most people do. What it means is not wanting anything personally for oneself, but giving freely and gladly to all, equally.
