My main fear of living there wouldn't be the isolation, the hardship of the desert etc. it would be the nutters who you're living with. The pot smoking borderline schizo about-to-go-into a fit of rage (0:49:35) nutters who thought it was a good idea to take their kids to a commune where the main currencies are pot, meth, alcohol and guns...
Saw the whole movie! It almost made me cry in a good way. I think it's so cool to be living in a place without government and to live by your own rules but still live in a place that knows how to control it in a well manner. And Not to be mean or anything but aren't these people what you call hippies?
Nice Doc. i get how some ppl might want this (me included) but i disapprove of bring children to a place like this. Give them the opportunity and ability to see if they would like to live in main stream society. to keep them their and let them decided later on is not an option
I live in a rather quiet neighborhood of elderly and young families...but, I feel so congested amongst society. Off The Grid is tranquility one can appreciate despite the hardships.
I'm 30 minutes into this video and yet that's all it has taken to cause me to realize that Eden still exists. I don't smoke weed... beer is my thing these days but I've found nothing in the U.S. Constitution that says those who smoke weed or frankly partake of anything by choice which doesn't harm anyone is illegal. So those helicopters raiding the place in their UNCONSTITUTIONAL WAR ON DRUGS can KISS MY ASS! Congress... how about war on the federal reserve legislation?
Thanks for this great video. We've owned 2 desert lots in Carson Estates since the 60s but have never been to see them. We just keep paying the taxes, less than a case of beer a year. This doc was a real eye opener, introducing us to the neighbours. I can say we'd be happy to have these people as our neighbours. Some honest folks who love their country with an obvious passion. Even though the countrys laws have devastating consequences on on some of their lives.
Those cops r wasting their time tyring to stop these people from smoking weed. wtf. If they succeed, nobody has gained anything, and if they fail, nobody has gained anything. Either way, time is wasted.
Pig-farmer is a saint. Robie the singer is a GENIUS. Obama is no better than Bush. We know that now because we get internet & i dont think the Mesa do.
After a man gave so much for his country - how sick to burn down a veterans only refuge & home over a herb.
i found this inspiring. i plan to get off the grid myself but i have a plan and i won't be doing drugs or drinking. mostly i just want to try to decouple myself from society a little. actually i will still be very involved in society but just not in a normal way. a while ago i considered doing somethinglike this but now i have an opportunity to do a similar thing that suits me better. a good documentary imo. can you imagine if a majority of americans decided to uncouple from society?
I think that when people realize society is their biggest problem and start to do for themselves we will all be better off in the end. Everyone is about to kill themselves over a piece of paper. That makes no sense to me.
Why can't they haul water from the river? If they worked together it would be easy to haul and store water and purify it as they use it.. Or pitch in and have one well drilled and put in a solar pump.. Five mile to the river I am willing to bet there is ground water..

@Cleopatra001 Words are flexible things, but I (and others) define "the grid" as the physical tangible infrastructure that connects normal communities. Things like electric and telephone wires, roads and railways, water and gas lines.
Things like money and social welfare are part of society, but don't move through fixed systems. They are much more fluid and dynamic. Like a cloud rather than a grid. So these folks' labels are correct
@lykopis I don't remember anybody claiming to be an eco-pioneer, but maybe I just missed it. Regardless, their gardens aren't there because gardens don't grow in deserts. Not without expensive irrigation technology, anyway. They may not treat the land with total care, but they live and grow people there. That's productive.
And if food ever became scarce enough, you can bet that the people most inclined to raid others will be the overpampered millions in "civilized" consumer societies.
I feel for war vets tho. Gov gives one iota of a shit about them. Use them as guinea pigs and fodder - and for what. Sure as hell ain't for the people of this country or anything good.
eco-pioneers and off the grid, my ass. Those ppl at the beginning are just pissed off (which I can understand) & relying on others. They aren't doing anything productive w/ that land. Theyve trashed it. They don't even respect what they are living in. Where are their gardens , their compost? Some of these ppl will be the ones that run in on ppl who've actually worked to create productive gardens etc to sustain themselves & with guns blazing try to take all their shit. Is this a reservation?
@SnowfallEon "flags flying high"? I have no problem with patriotism, I have a problem with the idea that even though the government is "evil" it is not so evil that they wont take the money. I have friends in the military, I know soldiers with PTSD and I do not begrudge them their after care - but that is not what this is.
in the case of the nowhere kid they are exercising a movement of in with the new out with the old mentality, it's still not right, they need to learn respect..
So, its ok to steal from someone else as long as they have excess or are considered hoarding? This makes stealing ok. Sounds like we have been brainwashed. Big brother thinks it is ok to tax those who have worked hard and have in abundance so that they may give to those who do not have as much. Hmmm. Sounds so familliar....
There is no honor in what these people are doing. Living in a self-created slum, bearing false enlightenment, armed to the teeth and desperate to prove that the world is the enemy. To spend so much time hating the government and denying its authority, to turn around and suck it dry like avaricious parasites who would kill the host to survive even though the host death ensures their own is not honorable.
@Cleopatra001 These people are not free. They are not living in a self-contained, self-providing, isolated environment. They toil on arid land. The depend on hand outs and government checks to survive, but they feel no allegiance to the country. They expect the country to ensure their survival and indulge their delusions.
@Cleopatra001 They have polluted the term “freedom” and changed its meaning to fit their misguided purpose. Stop taking all handouts from the government, stop taking charity from the world you despise, walk into the desert without sound and never return – then I will believe in your freedom.
@Cleopatra001 the ones taking checks are getting what the government owed them for their serves they dont dispise the world and there term of freedom is true to the constitution i beleive in self sustainableity and your right this is not but they are off the grid
@TheWaldorock They are not off the grid, they eat the food that the government gives them, they take the checks that the government provides them, they break the law forcing expensive raids on their pot farms (And before you go crazy, I am all for the legalization of pot) - they are not off the grid. They are all over the grid, taking our money, yours and mine, and they do not give back. Furthermore they do not see why they should give back. They are more expensive than you or I ever could be.
i dont blame maine for his decision. He is right why die in a hospital bed than in nature with everything that makes you free and happy all around you. Maine your a brave and kind spirit. Live your life as long as you can.
I'd love to live completely off-grid, meaning no payment for heating, electricity, water, garbage removal and no payment for the piece of land I live on, but not like these people, I don't say they're total bums but a bit too dirty though, could be a bit more civilized. Love the freedom they have. Just need to remember responsibilities that come with this freedom.
This was a great video. I'd love to join a community. Or, if I had the money or the means, start one myself. Whoever did this documentary should do follow ups on the Mesa.
