Just got back from seeing these two guys grave sites while looking for a family members...sadly im too young to remember the show...but my mom still smiles whenever she mentions these guys
One of my earliest memories. Anyone remember Captain Sailorbird? Was he part of the Capt. Jinks show or not? I thought all those little people inside the TV knew each other. After all, they were all in the navy, weren't they?
I met George Baseleon (Salty Sam) while shopping in a grocery store,. He was a nice man and was great talking to him. I will alway remember meeting Salty.
@cougarxr797 That is so funny, I met him at the old grocery store (Ben Swartz...sic?) on University and Forest Hill. He went out of the way for his fans, and never seemed to be too busy to stop and say hi.
He was a very nice man who loved his fans. It was a thrill to meet him, even though I was in my twenties at the time. It is still one of the highlights of my life and something I will always treasure. I remember the Ben Swartz stores. There're gone now too.
I remembet Street Scene. They used to interview people on the street. I can't remember the name of the host but he anchored the news for WMBD at the time. Mom took me to see the show when I was very young and I wanted to be interviewed, but I didn't get noticed. After the camera's went off, Mom went to the host and asked him if he could talk to me, which he did. I was thrilled and never forgot his kindness.
I used to watch these guys every afternoon when I was little, back in the '60's. Also saw the show when they brought it back in '78, after it was cancelled in the early 70s.They just don't do shows like this anymore.
Captain Jinks and Salty Sam rule!! This is classic stuff and the best young people/college people show ever. They can't begin to match this type of comedy and unscripted material today. For all us lucky enough to see this - we will never forget the great stuff.. Thanks Captain and Salty..
Anyone know where the theme song came from, or what it's called? It's played several times in the Shirley McLaine movie "Irma la Douce". Is it an old French sailor tune, or what? I heard it first, of course, on Captain Jinks but years later, when I watched Irma la Douce on video for the first time, instantly recognized the song.
On Sat. May 9, 2009 a memorial marker will be installed at Springdale cemetery in Peoria, Il honoring both the Captain and Salty Sam. Festivities afterwards for the fans of the show at an Irish pub on Water street in Peoria.
Ahhh! The weekday afternoon voyages aboard the S.S. Albatross! I remember the snowy black & white tv pictures from my childhood. Watching the Captain & Salty was the highlight of my day. The cartoons, the jokes, the FUN!. A lot better than the trash on tv today! ( By trash, I don't mean the kids' shows)
I remember the birthday list---one year they actually read my name and I was on Cloud 9. This was a GREAT children's show--It was "must see tv" in Central Peoria--one of my happiest childhood memories is this program. Thanks for posting this.
My mother took her cub scout troop there back in the early 60s. Capt Jinks was on vacation and Salty Sam had me sit with him for the whole show, cause I was the only girl there. I wish I could get a tape of the show, but they didn't record them back then.
I was an at home player for the bucket game. My excitement in being chosen was quickly turned to horror when the little girl who was selected to play tried throwing the first ball instead of just dropping in and missed the bucket. They sent me a coupon for an eight pack of Dr. Pepper and a t-shirt out of pity I am sure.
Oh wow, does this bring back some very fun and pleasant memories!! I watched them every evening. My brother even won a prize for a picture he sent in!! Thanks for sharing this, love it!!
They came to the festival in Manito when I was little and they signed my Mickey Mouse ears. I still have them! My kids know not to touch them!!! lol I loved watching this everyday after school. I always wanted to go on the show. This is a wonderful reminder of my childhoos!
I remember Salty Sam! I didn't know ANYONE would remember this show! My half-brother was on Salty Sam's show in the 1960's. My mom told me about it. I think it had something to do with his jr. high basketball team.
I have Salty Sam's autograph! My grandpa had gotten it from him when I was a kid. They had worked together at the post office some years before the Salty Sam show.
I remember seeing George Baselion as Salty Sam at the Heritage House cutting ham for the people. Every year they had a breakfast With Santa for the kids at a local restaurant. Sometimes I would see George walking along the streets in Peoria in his Salty Sam outfit.
He was a naturaly nice guy. I would rush home from school every day just to be able to watch the Capotain Jinks Show. I remember seeing Sam Lonergan doing the weather forcasts sometimes on tv also.
Holy MOly! I did a yahoo360 blog and asked peoples favorite TV kids show growing up? I included The Captain and Salty after Garfield Goose. I Lived in Streator/Lacon/Chillicothe IL in the 60's till 1972. The Captain and Salty came to Streator IL to the Armory and it was packed! What fun! Thanks for putting these up. :@)
I used to run home from school everyday just to watch them. Peoria. Not much positive I can say about it. I left it a long time ago. But these two are a very positive childhood memory. Thanks for posting
I was on this show!! I got to be on when Bos'n Joe would draw pictures and two kids had to guess what the picture was, kind of an early form of pictionary. I wonder in the episodes are archived somewhere?
My grandmother made the outfit for Captian Jinks. That is my claim to fame.

Thanks for this. Does anyone have any Street Scene, where the news was broadcast from downtown Peoria in the street, and people flocked around?

I watched the Captain Jinks show growing up in Lewistown the in the early 1980s. It was, as some would say, "Appointment Television"
