This is one of the most amazing pieces of music that has ever hit my ears. The swells of the symphony is so intense I can hardly bear it. The vocals are amazing as well.
As much as I love this rendition (a personal favorite on my ipod at the moment) it's hard to find too many live versions of this song on youtube for some reason.
Does anyone know the English translation of the lyrics? Roughly? I understand a phrase here or there and I love this song, I'm just a little lost in translation.
Thank you so very much for posting this video! LOVE RAMEAU! Who is the enchantress that is singing? Would be great to have her name. Thank you again :)
From the french opera "Castor et Pollux" by JB Rameau. Télaïre, daughter of the God of the Sun, is mourning near the tomb of lover Castor.

@ElectricMusicMachine I found it on yahoo.com
Sad finishes, pale torches,
Day more dreadful than lugubrious darkness
Stars of the tombs,
No, I will see nothing any more but your funeral clearness's.
You, which see my heart éperdu,
Father of the day, ô sun, ô my father!
I do not want any more a one although Castor
And I give up the light.

I love this song. =)
It's so beautiful, and of course I cannot help but to think of the 2006 film about Marie Antoinette. So lovely...

Sad memorial, pale candles,
Day more awful than darkness,
Sinister stars of the graves,
No, from now on, I won't see nothing but your glommy lights.
You, who see my desperate heart,
Father of the daylight, oh Sun, oh my father!
I don't want any more what Castor has lost,
And I give you light up.
