If you have an external usb drive or 2nd hard drive redobackup cd is free and easy to use it'll backup your entire drive or just selected folders. redobackup runs from a live cd download > burn > reboot

Well hard drive failures aren't that common if hard drives are handled properly.

Past 5 years I haven't had any failures in any of my computers even under weeks of 24/7 usage.
