  • I wonder how would he'd been when 18 years old....he was old at that time, which means much low testosterone than at 18, and we all know testosterone lowers the larynx so deeper notes......I wonder if could've gone lower at 18.

  • Another perspective on JD: He could hit a C1, which is the lowest note on a tuba or lower than the lowest string (E1) on a double bass. Yes, a double bass does not (usually) go as low as JD Sumner could.

  • May his soul RIP...If you have a good ear, this man was singing in the range of the bass guitar...I just stumble across him this morning...I love bass singers...Now I have to put Mr. Sumner up on the pedestal with Mr. Isaac Dickie Freeman from the Fairfield four...Sorry Isaac, you have to share the spot light now...

  • TVFD used to do an annual gospel concert as a fundraiser. We had JD & the Stamps as the headliner one year. AMAZING voice!!

  • I have a CD of JD Sumner & the Stamps. JD really lets it loose on Bill Gaither's Homecomilng Video "Down by the Tabernacle."

  • Man I wish I could have met JD

  • @Fooberedo Me too. :-)

  • JD is singing in the same range as the bass

  • JD sumner era realmente bom...apenas usava uma técnica, quarquer bom cantor de quarteto tem uma técnica que donima mais

  • I put false info! Everyone says that!

  • This gentleman didn't use fry as a rule.. you can tell the difference in tonal quality when one uses fry. not nearly the same sound. but sweet when used anyway.

  • I miss JD

  • I don't feel like a bass whenever I listen to this guy. How do you train to go THAT low?

  • train or/and experience your vocal fry range of your voice

  • I'm starting to think that it is vocal fry.

  • Its possible. It's called puberty. I hate how everybody hates me because I canhit bass notes! Damn. by the way, I should have worded that differently. I was stunned by his low notes. Is that better?

  • @brianisawesom the base notes in the fairfield four version are MUCH better.

  • @kameelion they are!!!!

  • @brianisawesom and by base notes, i meant bass notes... well untill he burps in the end... that's pretty low.

  • Elvis sing from up above, I can hear him singing right along. I want walk,

  • one voice is missing ?????

  • Never mind! This is the Ryman Gospel Reunion!lol

  • This isn't at the Ryman Gospel Reunion, I have the dvd and they do sing this song, but this isn't the time. JD is awesome, he is actually in the Guinness World Book for lowest bass singing.

  • Thank you for sharing this with us.

    Merry Christmas

  • What DVD album would have this song on it?

  • It is on the Ryman Gospel Reunion

  • I think it's Ryman Gospel Reunion.. Is it not?

  • nice F#1 by JD!

  • Wonderful singin'; FIVE stars!!

  • Elvis needs to be singing with them.

  • JD will always be the lowest in my book. You have guys coming out now that may be recorded lower, but remember the sound technology when JD was recording was not as great as it is today and JD didn't have any real competitors in his day. If JD were alive and young, I wouldn't bet against him thats for sure. He was and is the true King of Bass Singers.

  • as far as i know, JD was the record holder for a really long time with a C0, and the only person i know of that broke that record is tim storms (there's an amazing vid of him on youtube). tim broke it by a little more than an octave (B -2), without the aid of technology, but i still wholeheartedly agree that JD is the best.

i think theres a point where it doesnt really matter how low you can go anymore, anyways. JD almost never came close to using the bottom to wow people. he's the king.

  • i think JD only had a C1, and then it was broken by Dan Britten with a Db0, then by Tim Storms. i could be wrong about JD having C1 not C0 so dont take my word for that one.

  • At the end, JD hit a solid F#1(American Standard of Pitch Measurement)or an F#0 (European Standard of Pitch Measurement). The man was phenomenal and he was never scared to try his ending notes an octave lower. I wish that I could've met him.

  • Awesome..........golden memories

  • JD was the king. I always have to shake my head when people say this guy or that guy can go lower. JD was alot more than the lowest voice on the planet...he was a superhuman person and star.

  • @jlonnon It wasn't just the low range. He had a pretty decent high end as well. Check out the Blackwood's "In That Land" sometime to hear JD up in 2nd tenor territory. Plus, JD had fantastic tone and delivery to go with his range.

  • I dont really care to argue if anyone can go lower than JD or not. Even if they can, they cant match the whole package that JD was as a singer, a person, and as a star in the business. When you have Elvis hiring you for the band, your probably a little more special than anyone else out there.

  • O cara é simplesmente d+, este é JD, valeu.

  • jd sumner used to babysit my dad when my dad was a baby

  • Rocky, Sterban was taught by JD, but when he tres to get real low he looses all the pitch and tone, not only Sterban but many sound like they're just growling. I'm a huge bass fan, have been for forty years. Sumner, Younce, Big cheif, Tim Riley so many old timers, but now there's a whole new crop of great young basses. Basses rock!!!!!!

  • megabass is jd sumner great person

  • hm, i had read that one of the lowest notes recorded was during "where the roses never fade", when he was in a recording session with his nephew donnie sumner (lowest recorded, but not his actual lowest, which seems to have been even lower given this). he goes 5 notes below a double low C during it, youll need to google for the interview though.

  • I read this as well and bought that CD but there is nothing really low on that CD, bollocks. I guess some singers dón´t know which octave is which...

  • Actually, the lowest notes he ever hit was a the lowest Bb on the piano in "Blessed Assurance", for which The Stamps won an a Grammy. He was passed once by someone and then that record was broken by Tim Storms. J.D. is still awesome though.

  • which recording and at what time in the song. I have a 1966 version and he hits at least a short C1 but perhaps even lower.

  • JD Sumner holds the Guiness Book of World Records record for lowest note ever (C1) --- the lowest C on a piano... check it out! Rest in Peace, JD!!!

  • You can hear Elvis in the song:))

  • J.D. was a good friend.... i miss talking to him on the phone. You would call and he would answer, in that deep bass voice......"YO!" Thanks for the memories J!!!!!

  • Its sad that so man people did not get the opportunity to hear J. D. sing in person. He was a great invidudial and had a great voice. I grew up in the 60's near Memphis and miss J. D. and the Blackwood Brothers. I was just able to hold down the folding seats in Ellis Auditorum in Memphis the first time I heard the Blackwood Brothers and the Statemen with Hovie Lister. Time has made a change in everything.

  • I have listened to this on a Gaither tape. Ive loved it forever

  • The first time I heard this song was by the Fairfield Four- their base is great too!

  • i know! i love the fairfield fours version! and of course you can't go wrong with jd sumner and the stamps

  • i love watching ed enochs expressions when he sings! these guys are brilliant

  • I've sang bass since 8th grade and the only two i've heard who's notes I can't quite match are master Sumners and Richard Sterban

  • Same here...I lose Aaron McCune sometimes, too, but J.D. can just drop down and he makes it look easy!

  • You ever heard of Tim Storms? I'm with ya in that i've sang bass since like eigth, but the lowest Sterban ever gets is an E, that in the song "When it comes to you" and he's just rumbling that one out. Tim storms sings for Rescue, a small acapella christian group, and he sings a version of amazing grace and hits a low c#...check it out on youtube....

  • J D Sumner takes a low C in the song named "Way Down"

Elvis - Way Down right in the end, better than Tim Storm for 100000 times

  • that C is very off-key (and whispery) in the beginning (E1), a much better C1 is the one at the end of "you´ll never walk alone", it´s also in one of my bass videos.

  • The lowest Sterban ever gets is an E Flat in the song "Working on a building"

  • My Dad sang bass in our church quartet.J.D. was his favorite singer.Everytime I hear him sing it makes me cry. They played several of J.D.'s songs at dad's funeral.

  • JD was a star

  • I totally agree.Not only was/is a star,he's a pure legend.

  • i'll agree to that

  • JD was a man with a big heart.
