  • Every sport there is a dominant bodytype. basketball: tall and lanky with a little muscle definition. football: tall heavy with large muscle mass and also some fat. boxing: very low bodyfat, strong core light arms. with jiu jitsu we are all equal. whoever perfects the most technique is dominant. just my opinion

  • @punisher00109 I think for Jits its better to be tall with long limbs to gets better leverage with a strong core strength.

  • @NinjaWarriorDude marcelo

  • By the comments left here, I can only assume that BJJ in America is turning in to the next Tae Kwon Do. I sincerely hope this isn't true. The only way to keep this from happening is if students seek out legit gyms where the instructors don't pass out belts like candy on Halloween.

  • what the freak? thats a blue belt? omg, i got alot of work to do

  • amazing , bjj is sooo cool

  • This is awesome,

  • gi grappling is a whole other world

  • wow!!! I have alot work to do. We don't officially test at my gym so I know I have to get busy.

  • this is how all blue belts should be

  • That was the best freakin blue belt I've ever seen! He HAS to compete!

  • WOW! Blue belts like that may only exist in the archives of YouTube now.

  • absolutely amazing

  • That's a pretty high level blue belt.

  • at 4:41 the blue belt taps the black belt. thats the best blue belt I have ever seen

  • @2dominate Black belt is not going full capacity here.

  • man those moves are nice

  • CESAR GRACIE JIU JITSU !!!!

  • Nice!

  • Congratulations on your purple belt

  • beautiful technique, wonderful

  • Excellent work. Love all the gay jokes, even though most of you woukd be choked unconscious or have a broken limb from this guy.

  • Why do so many "fighting styles" revert to two little kids grappling each other on the ground and wrapping themselves around any limb that tries to rise up?

  • my god i love this guy's triangle setups. great video

  • well deserved

  • I got my purple belt in Dec and it is beautiful to watch the beauty of jiu jitsu in a test like that. Congrats and well deserved!

  • nice video, really good technique, a lot of work.... for a deserved result.

  • why they bow

  • Impressive. The technique displayed is excellent! A lot of work went into this.

  • This was put together nicely. Keep the videos rolling guys!

  • i know black belts that would need a lot of practice to do that.

  • Great school! It seem you guys add a little bit of wrestling and Judo into your mix, very smart!

  • Really loved this video. Top level bjj on display here. Poetry in motion, I hope with plenty of drilling and rolling I will get my purple belt one day.

  • Brutal !!!

  • Thanks for putting this video together, it f'in rocked! loved it. And of course congrats to Jimmy!

  • This was indeed awesome

  • @mr zara standing gaurd pass

  • bass rutten is quite good at bjj

  • @911beats If Bas Rutten was like a foot shorter and 60 lbs lighter lol

  • Go hard or go home!!! that was pretty awesome to watch

  • Nice. I like it.

  • can someone link to me what move is it at 1:31

  • @MrZarakikenpachi88 Its a standing guard break

  • great stamina

  • Yea, bjj does have a good belt test system... Especially this dojo :)

    Great job Jimmy

  • We still think bjj has a very good belt test system.

  • My son will turn 16 next year. He will get to test for his blue belt, he knows all of the stuff like this guy but he still has to be of age to make the test. At his other studio he got his Black Belt last year because there is on age on when you can test for your belts, it's set on if you have learned that level.

  • @bill06gto we have a similair system at the Judo school i train you have a minimum time of 6 months between belts but you are able to for instance go from white to orange if you for instance had prior experience, for instance ive been training judo there for 5 years ( im 16 now) and before that i did freestyle wrestling for about 4-5 years, i just passed my brown belt exam yesterday :)

  • Great

  • Show! congratulations man

  • Very good dojo!!!

  • one word....PRO!!!

  • damn that dude went hard...

  • Hey, do any of you guys have the problem of when someone puts you in a reverse triangle, you get a a strain in the ear and its quite sharp?... Its when the neck skin by the ear gets pulled down slightly... Is this normal?

  • @k00lkane its normal ur fine

  • Nice video! It must not be fun to get tested on though!

  • sick vid... the guy is all black countered everything with no freaking effort at all

  • Technique manifested in human form.......

  • Awesomeness.

  • thanks for sharing.

  • @Ironman4321wow Yeah I feel the same way. This video makes me wonder if I'll ever get my purple belt. Excellent technique showcased here.

  • this video was awesome. i can't wait to be this good!

  • that´s realy realy cool........a very nice exam

    a big OSU from germany

    respect and honor

  • love that set up at :50

  • its all in your head, if you really want it and fight for it, you will have it, LAW OF ATTRACTION

  • 2:27

  • Hips are the seat of all power. In classical and sacred texts they are called the loins. Can't do s?!t without hip control.

  • I will soon be a student of Krav Maga while simultaneously studying BJJ. What I love the most about BJJ is the simplicity of the technique. However I'm not saying the techniques are easy but what I mean is once you understand their application in ground fighting becomes simple.

  • why does the japanese scroll in the backround read "Aikido" then?

  • Purple mentality!

  • Any tips from Roy or any upper belts on how to get from Blue to Purple? I've been a blue forever, I am clearly better than most blue belts and can hang with purples, I'm thinking more conceptually like a purple would, but there just something lacking, I don't know what. Bigger blue belts give me a hard time.

  • @BigolePappy2 more technique is required when going against bigger heavier guys, as you know they normally try to stack you and break your closed guard and use their weight etc. which you need to use more logic and smoother technique like Caio terra does I think he is 145 pounds and he spars with bigger guys so he uses more technique and leverage to overcome it is not impossible, I normally use the basic of posistions with bigger guys, great example Roger gracie, hope this helped my friend :)

  • Very impressive. People don't realize how many different techniques are involved. That takes hours and hours of mat time.

I think the gi is the only way to go, but its more practical to roll without it.

    Anyway, very impressive.

  • im taking my purple exan in a couple of months, crap im getting nervous :(

  • Magic

  • 100%skill

  • I want to train in a martial art which is the most practical for street fighting and defense. Which would be the best for this?

  • My advice is study a style you're most interested in. Why study a style you have no interest in no matter how practical for streetfighting it is? For me, I always loved flashy kicks so I study Taekwondo. I'm not a fan of grappling but I respect it.

  • Blue belt WOW. respect. that's ill i can say.

  • dont know anything about but,i sure admire what you have done!

  • 3:54 sweep absolutely blows my mind

  • lot of stuff!!

  • I've never been to a BJJ academy that made you take an exam for your belt.

  • @rockos414 Yeah, where I'm from you win enough in competition and show technique on par with the purple belts, you're considered ready. Still takes a long-ass time, but there's no formal exam.

  • @rockos414 Some practitioners believe in a full curriculum...thats how I have always been and seen grading. From a one sided perspective its pretty awesome to see the techniques vary in different belts.

  • @GarlandBJJ It's difficult to pinpoint what techniques should be required for "purple", or any other color for that matter. I like to think it's not what you know, but how well you can use what you know.

Thnx for the insight, much appreciated.

  • well deserved bro!!! for sure u are not a blue anymore

  • Nice and awsome!! They are all real masters! Great!!

I practice Ving Tsun and aikido...thought about starting bjj..but I'm too old I think (almost 40)...

Greeting for all bjj students and masters!!!

  • @janubart Never too old for Bjj!

  • 30 people failed their purple best test because they can't move like this guy. lol

  • i wanna learn the 1:07 escape so bad ....it looks pretty effective , i always wait for the guy to transition when he's on scarf....

  • Nice vid, Nice gym, Nice tech.

  • well earnt....lol

  • PHENOMINAL!!!

  • I can't wait til I'm at that level

  • That was really cool!

  • 4:47 NIIIIIICE!!

  • That guy was most certainly purple belt worthy weeeell before that test was recorded,

keeping him in the blue for easy competition win hoarding?

  • do i have to know all the names of the tecniques? and how many of them do i need for the purple belt?

  • that guy is beastin lol

  • Lol sorry bjj. Didn't try to say bj to be funny, honestly missed it!

  • @Tehpenar

I agree, bj is one of the most advanced martial arts where the littlest things can make the biggest difference..and what it does is you can be much smaller and alot weaker but still effectivly beat your opponent

  • 0-52 secs into the triangle.... slick!!! Great post

  • looks like roy knows how to use his weight :D

  • I think Bjj and aikido would be a great combination of tools to have... maybe with a little bit of kung fu thrown in for fast hand attacks

  • Bjj isn't very old and bjj blue belt is really a black belt in other martial arts. The blue requires black belt skill in other of the arts! That's why it's so amazing.

  • @Bmxthegr8

having a black belt in anything other than bjj or judo doesn't seem to mean much

and a first dan blackbelt in judo seems kind of like a purple in bjj (which is still an accomplishment)

  • @TehPenar I agree, i have a black belt in Judo (competed nationally) and im still only a blue belt in BJJ.

  • @sinister0077

but im sure you wipe most blue belts out during takedowns (especially gi takedowns) :P

i should have included sambo with bjj/judo in my first comment

other than that though, it doesn't seem most "legit" combat sports have belts

  • @TehPenar I can throw the blue and purple belts... the brown belts tend to pull guard... the black belts are just as good as i am with there throws... though i think my gripping and movement is better... doesnt matter. i throw, then get tapped out 10 seconds later :)

  • Awesome Job, Looks Well Deserved... I'm just starting out, very motivating..

    Thanks for posting

  • @BrazilianMMAKing Its not just BJJ...once you get it you will understand ALL martial arts are ALL IN THE HIPS. Its all about the way the body activates the muscles and is able to be flexible with power. Without good hip control, you will be stiff and not able to defend or even attack correctly. Its similar for striking; the power from alot of strikes comes from the ground up, through the hips, out the arm (or leg).

Good luck with your training =)

  • @DrVoltage1

it's all in the hips happy

  • @DrVoltage1 fuckin hit the nail on the head my friend

  • @DrVoltage1 Thank you for the wonderful advice..! :) I've been considering starting with some BJJ .. But there's not much 'open-source' information to stumble upon, I have questions! :D Are there any hits/kicks in this sport.. Is it mostly a 'sport' or a genue fighting style? :)

    - Malte

  • @Malteboy777 Im not an expert on BJJ, but as far as i know there is no striking and it is mostly a sport. I'm not saying it doesnt have combat applications, but good luck ground fighting a guy who is in a group without getting destroyed. Japanese Jiu Jitusu incorporates striking, throws, and even some weapon training. If you can find a dojo for that I would highly suggest it if you want to be more well rounded. Otherwise BJJ is a great sport art that strengthen technique, body, and intelligence

  • Very solid practicioner. This really makes me miss my Judo dojo :'(

  • @BrazilianMMAKing When standing, your hips are your base. If your weight falls past your hips, or your opponent gets his own weight under your hips, you're easily thrown off balance. On the ground, your hips are the key to moving. If you can move your hips, you can control where you go. And likewise, if your opponent can control your hips, he controls your ability to move effectively. You throw with your hips. You shrimp with them. Get your armbar. Guard pass. You name it.

  • and this guy is just going for a puple belt? holy jesus. lol. Hes sick.

  • Very nice to see BJJ practiced in a more traditional, formal way. the way real martial arts should be...

  • Great job and beautiful techniques!!!

  • i want to get into something like this

  • Beautiful!

  • Great video(s)

  • 2:30 is a slick lookin mount

  • Seriously this video has inspired beyond words..Thank you for the upload.

Great sweeps, scrambles and movement. You truly deserve that purple belt!

  • sick JJ the black belts are relentless

  • damn that looks like a lot to learn.

  • That turned out pretty good... Opening with the Upa escape and Knee Elbow escape had me thinking this was a joke of a purple belt test, but not so..

  • dayyyyym, that´s why i want to start bjj, in mma it´s pretty much all that matters!

  • @14thDynasty not true my friend. in mma kick boxeing matters very much too. i am a martial artist and i know kick boxeing, Vee arnis jitsu and wresteling, how ever i have sparred with peapole in judo, Kempo Karate, krav maga, and many other disciplines. there all good two know. how ever i will say in mma its good to have a standing art and a ground art.

  • This looks really cool but I've been doing TKD for 13 years and i don't think I can switch.

  • @nintendo007 There's nothing bad about doing multiple styles at once!

  • i feel sorry for the guy in the blue gi lol

  • Wow, incredible movement of the legs and hips.

  • anyone know what takedown that was at 1:14 ? thanks :)

  • @JuSKallday its a push / pull ankle sweep. not a very common takedown, very similar to the ankle sweep from guard.

  • @ct7320 thanks alot :), guessing u do bjj, how long does it take to go threw the belts ?, am thinking of starting, bin doin catch for a while, and also do muay thai, u think bjj and muay thai go together well, i always thought so but i recently bin told otherwise ?

  • @JuSKallday depends what you're aiming for. if you want to do mma they go well together yes, but if you go to different clubs to train in each it will be up to you 'mix up' the styles eg throw some strikes then go for a takedown. best to find an mma gym, if thats your goal. it takes the average person 8-12years to get a bjj black belt, if they keep training 2-3 times a week. faster if you train 4-5 times a week.the secret is to keep traing,no matter what.the more you train, the faster you progres

  • @ct7320 thanks, yeah i went to a mma gym for like 2 weeks, 3 times a week and it felt like medioca bjj and medioca muay thai, thats why think i should train at a specialized bjj place and muay thai place and in a few years go to a mma club just to put them together, thanks bro

  • That guy in the blue gi is going to need a hot shower after this.

  • a lot of the takedowns are similar to those in wrestling.its interesting...

  • everyone's gi at that school look unusually new.

  • Nível muito bom, excelente! Qual a equipe?

  • Damn i wish i could live in a gym and do this everyday!

  • felicidades!

  • That was awesome. Good Video i liked the editing and the intensity,

  • id watch this all day.

  • OMG,seriously r u purple belt?

    that movement were very smooth.

anyways i dont have any belt yet, hehehhe.

  • we fight. I blink...you explode.

  • Amazing! Congratulations!

  • i wish you guy's had a school in edmonton

  • super nice

  • dudes sick

  • This is beautiful beyond a boubt. Excellent display of Jiu Jitsu.

During the demonstration part of the exam though i had hard time distinguishing between JJJ and BJJ. His Uke was compliant. He executed his techniquies with out active resistance even though he had to prove himself in the end.

As a man who studys both and all variations of jiu jitsu, could a pure BJJ proponent please explain how this demo is any different than some of the better JJJ vids i've seen?

  • Do you have any jjj videos to share?

Your question inspired me to find some: These are the first two I found: watch?v=0nl901nrUrc or watch?v=3S9sul-kE7I

The tech and combos shown in the Roy Dean video are only a tiny sample of the knowledge of that purple belt. He wanted to showcase his game and show some of his favorite tech. He could pull off most of what he showed, at will, against whitebelts his size I am sure. Contrast this to the jjj video where the moves are for demonstration only.

  • Man do I love Gracie JJ... The only problem really though is that with the popularity of MMA now, tons of MMA dojos are just on the BJJ money-wagon now and rarely have any students that are truly representative of their belt level. For example, I once went to a school that had nearly half the class being "black belts", yet I was tapping out the vast majority of them and I had only been training in BJJ for like 4 months at the time. Quite sad if you think about it.

  • @TurdFurginson ya, but what is your skill level with jjj or other variations? Also some gyms give belts from time in and not necessarily skill acquired. For instance, at my gym, as long as you show up 2 times a week, you can progress to a blue belt in 8 months, but the guy who comes 5 times a week is going to be much better.

  • @1tmoch I wrestled for a year before I started training in MMA, but ya I just think people should be rewarded on overall knowledge and to some extent their ability to submit others on the same skill level rather than sheer time attending classes.

  • @TurdFurginson Tell the same story without the details of how bad ass you are... Lol it ruins its credibility. I know what you're talking about, but I think if you went to any MMA/BJJ gym here in Oregon you'd get beat up on after having only 4 months of training.

  • @slorunR1988 I never meant to sound like a badass, cause I know in the martial arts world I'm certainly not. I was just commenting on how theres a lot of McDojos out there that have "black belts" that can't even pull off a proper triangle or execute good takedowns. I agree about the Oregon thing, same goes for pretty much any credible gym.

  • I'm a 2nd Dan in Freestyle Karate and I have implemented alot of ground work into our training. If I went up against a Blue belt in BJJ, I'd be tapping out in secounds. Wish we had BJJ in my town. Great clip. An inspiration for other styles to adapt to BJJ.

  • brilliant fights...

  • Interesting teaching technique. where I train you get the belt when our instructor 'feels you have earned it', but I must admit I like this type of grading.

Not taking anything away from the guy, hes deffinetly at purple belt level, very good sweep/triangle and armbar combinations, but I find it very interesting that there was not a single back ascape technique shown at the beginning, also no north south escape both of which I think are vital white belt techniques.

  • Definitely a Roy Dean student! Very fluid

  • this man is a beast, so smooth with his technique, must be hours of practice in the dojo. hope to be as good as him someday.

  • i love the hip throw to arm bar too, thats awesome, and the kimura is another awesome move too

  • awesome effort

  • He's awesome :P I'm only a junior yellow belt but I want to be like this. I love the hip throw to arm bar.

  • Now it's decided, I'm going to the neariest BJJ section

This is just so beatiful, seems like so much ellegant, strategic, stylish and beatiful way of fighting!

  • That's beautiful. But it looked so painful near the end though when he has to take on all the black belts, haha.
